Speaker 1:
[00:03] With Jenny Garth and Tori Spelling. Okay, so when I saw that this episode was called Rebound, I was hoping the show would make a rebound for you. Because last week was a little better.

Speaker 2:
[00:22] It's, oh man.

Speaker 3:
[00:24] It's so funny because I read the comments, and people are mad that we don't love it, but then the other half are like, yeah, it's not great.

Speaker 1:
[00:31] They don't love it. Yeah, it's.

Speaker 3:
[00:34] So it's a little bit tough to know. And are we judging it against itself? Are we judging against earlier seasons?

Speaker 2:
[00:41] It's just like, I don't know.

Speaker 1:
[00:43] Oh, good question. I feel like a lot of it comes from earlier seasons.

Speaker 2:
[00:48] Yeah.

Speaker 3:
[00:48] I mean, it's not bad.

Speaker 1:
[00:50] No.

Speaker 2:
[00:51] It's just not our show.

Speaker 3:
[00:53] Yeah, maybe that's what it is.

Speaker 1:
[00:55] It's just different. And they have to understand a new showrunner was in, new writers. It's, yeah, all that happened.

Speaker 3:
[01:05] And things changed between 1991, you know, when you start and now 1998. Was it 1990 or 1991 that you started?

Speaker 1:
[01:16] 1990, right? Yeah. 1990.

Speaker 2:
[01:19] I mean, it's almost a decade. Right.

Speaker 1:
[01:22] And I know they want us to grow up, but it's just, here's my thing. I think the storylines could be more interesting.

Speaker 3:
[01:28] They're just really repetitive. Right. The David storyline, I feel like.

Speaker 1:
[01:33] I can't. It's just, you know, I could watch him.

Speaker 3:
[01:35] I feel like we've done this, we've done this, we've done this. Look, I'm glad David and Noah are friends. Let's do the synopsis.

Speaker 1:
[01:41] Okay. So this is season eight. No, yeah. So this is season eight, episode 18, Rebound aired January 28th, 1998. Are you going to read the synopsis?

Speaker 3:
[01:52] If you want me to. Synopsis, Jenni's off today. Just so everybody knows. David's band member crashes his car and blames Noah at the bar. Donna suffers a professional setback thanks to a child brat. Dr. Jeff finally shoots his shot. Valerie makes sure Kelly gets caught. Steve meets a bride who gets cold feet. Brandon tells Kelly what made him cheat.

Speaker 1:
[02:16] Blomp, blomp. Oh, sorry. Director Charles Pratt Jr. Writer Michael Cassutt.

Speaker 3:
[02:24] For me, the bride storyline was probably the worst.

Speaker 2:
[02:26] Yeah.

Speaker 1:
[02:27] Hands down.

Speaker 2:
[02:28] Steve's speech was good, but then it's just like, it was just so bad.

Speaker 3:
[02:33] Followed by the child's.

Speaker 1:
[02:34] Yeah. If I lost both of those, okay, the David, Noah, the music, the only thing that kept me interested in that storyline is I thought the keyboardist was hot.

Speaker 3:
[02:46] That one was a little bit more 90210-y, at least. Like it felt like, okay, we've got David, we've got the music, we've got some drama, the guy's threatening to sue. Is David going to do the right thing? Is he going to do the wrong thing? Donna tells him what to do. She's always right. They finally make peace. David and Noah. So sort of like 90210-y at least.

Speaker 1:
[03:05] Okay. Yeah, you're right.

Speaker 2:
[03:07] The child star one was ridiculous.

Speaker 1:
[03:14] It makes me think like they're all, Donna just started this fashion career and they're already finding it hard to do storylines. They have nothing.

Speaker 3:
[03:22] They have nothing because it's like, first of all, no kid's going to act like that. Really? Yes, maybe the kid would like want to go have fun. That part was sort of okay, but it's just the over-the-top-ness and then coming in as the clown and just, the whole thing.

Speaker 1:
[03:39] I wish we did some like Devil Wears Prada stuff.

Speaker 2:
[03:42] Right.

Speaker 3:
[03:42] That would be so cool.

Speaker 2:
[03:43] Exactly.

Speaker 3:
[03:44] So when you watch it, are you like cringing or are you like?

Speaker 1:
[03:48] Yes. I did like the silver bracelets other than that.

Speaker 3:
[03:52] And that the director's going to, or not the director, the head of the fashion brand's going to fire you because the kid's terrible. It's just like ridiculous. Yeah. It's sort of nonsensical.

Speaker 1:
[04:04] I want them to all go back to college.

Speaker 3:
[04:06] Yeah. I'm thinking about that. It's like, I'm not mad about them going into the work world, but it's just like ridiculous.

Speaker 1:
[04:14] Well, what we're also feeling, I think, is their storylines are separated now because of the work world.

Speaker 3:
[04:22] Right.

Speaker 1:
[04:22] Right. We had high school, we had college, they were always kept together. And now that they're all over the place, I think the writers are having a hard time piecing it together.

Speaker 3:
[04:32] And they're trying because they've got Steve and Brandon together. They're trying to bring David into that.

Speaker 1:
[04:36] Yeah. Who was the bride? She looks familiar.

Speaker 3:
[04:40] I don't know, but that storyline was just like painful. The guy knocking on the door and them running out the back.

Speaker 2:
[04:47] It's just like, oh my goodness.

Speaker 1:
[04:50] Oh, and Kelly's storyline.

Speaker 3:
[04:52] That one was sort of better for me because I like that doctor.

Speaker 1:
[04:55] You like him?

Speaker 2:
[04:56] I don't dislike him.

Speaker 3:
[04:57] I don't care. But it's not like he's not terrible. You know, Valerie being up to her, no good.

Speaker 1:
[05:06] I like that one.

Speaker 3:
[05:07] You know, antics with the, we'll go to this restaurant.

Speaker 1:
[05:10] At least it's kind of back. I was happier with that.

Speaker 3:
[05:14] It's a little less silly, I guess is the word.

Speaker 1:
[05:18] Yeah.

Speaker 3:
[05:18] Even though it's silly. It's like, for me, Brandon, who did something wrong is behaving like he didn't do anything wrong. I think that's my hard part with him.

Speaker 1:
[05:28] He thinks it's okay.

Speaker 3:
[05:30] Not that he thinks it's okay, but that she should forgive him.

Speaker 1:
[05:33] Yes.

Speaker 3:
[05:34] It's like, wait, it's been like two minutes. You slept with someone you work with, why would she just come right back?

Speaker 1:
[05:43] Because it's a nighttime drama.

Speaker 3:
[05:46] Can you remember this time at all?

Speaker 1:
[05:50] Not as much.

Speaker 3:
[05:51] Were you guys like, I guess we're just going through the motions, or were you like, this is a little bit dumb?

Speaker 1:
[05:57] I don't remember thinking it was dumb, but I also don't remember ever just going through the motions. I remember season 10 still thinking, because a lot of people would say like, oh, when's that show going to end? How long are you guys going to do that? And I just remember, I remember Jenni and I having a conversation saying, we still feel so lucky to love our job and have a job. There was not one day that I was like, oh, I have to get up today and go to set. Like we still loved it.

Speaker 2:
[06:31] I get that. Yeah.

Speaker 1:
[06:33] It was a good run.

Speaker 3:
[06:34] It's just literally we've been talking for how long? Five minutes. And it's like, we're kind of done. We're kind of tapped out. Do you know what I'm saying? It's like, there's not, I think that's the problem. There's not a lot to analyze here. It's like the child actor storyline is so stupid. There's nothing to talk about other than it's ridiculous. And why would they let the mother behave that way? Why would they let the kid behave that? Do you know what I'm saying? It's like, what are we going to talk about?

Speaker 1:
[07:02] So how many? There's one, two, three, four. So there's four storylines, which is ridiculous.

Speaker 3:
[07:12] Distinct storylines, right?

Speaker 1:
[07:13] Yeah, you usually have your A, B, and then a C, fun one would be like the child star, the Steve one.

Speaker 3:
[07:19] Right.

Speaker 1:
[07:19] There's four.

Speaker 3:
[07:21] Right, and you could say the A is maybe Noah and David. And then there's the guy, the villain, who's gonna sue. You know, it's all, it's just sort of like-

Speaker 1:
[07:30] Wait, you didn't think he was cute?

Speaker 3:
[07:32] I think he was fine. I think it's, it's just, I don't even know what to say. That's my problem with this episode, because people are gonna get annoyed listening, but it's just like, eh, okay. Like I watched it, I wasn't mad. I wasn't, I wasn't necessarily bored watching it.

Speaker 1:
[07:46] You'll never remember this episode.

Speaker 3:
[07:48] Mm-mm.

Speaker 1:
[07:49] No, it's not memorable.

Speaker 3:
[07:50] Are you having that a lot with these episodes where you're like, when did we even do this?

Speaker 1:
[07:54] Yeah, and you know me, my memory is really good. And this season, I'm like, what? I don't remember this at all. I don't remember this at all. That's a problem.

Speaker 3:
[08:03] It's funny, I sort of, they all blend together a bit more after Rebecca Gayheart. Do you know what I'm saying? Like that's where you're sort of like, whoa, that was at the height and Dylan leaving. And then it becomes a little bit more blendy after that for me.

Speaker 1:
[08:21] Yeah, you're right. Did we like seven, season seven? I can't even remember.

Speaker 3:
[08:26] It's fine. This is, I'm gonna have to say this probably is worse.

Speaker 2:
[08:30] Do you know what I mean?

Speaker 1:
[08:31] Yeah, I lost my virginity season seven. So that was a big deal.

Speaker 2:
[08:36] Yeah, I feel like it was it was good.

Speaker 3:
[08:37] It was fine. This is a little bit more.

Speaker 1:
[08:42] I know we come back though at some point.

Speaker 3:
[08:45] Yeah, I'm sure when Dylan came back to it was huge. I don't know what to say. It's like I'm so sorry. I don't know what to say. It's sort of blah. I like Noah. I don't not like Noah. And I like you with Noah. You know what I'm saying? I'm okay with you not being with David right now and Noah. It's just a little bit okay. Like I literally feel like, what else should we talk about?

Speaker 1:
[09:14] I don't know. The fashion wasn't even good. I can't even talk about that.

Speaker 3:
[09:18] It's funny you bring that up because the fashion is very not noticeable. Yeah, you just don't really notice it.

Speaker 1:
[09:25] Which I mean, in some way, this is the part of the 90s where looking back, I'm not excited for it to come back. It was all darker colors, which is cool, but muted and just no special cuts. It was just, bleh.

Speaker 3:
[09:43] Yeah, it's not really even aggressive because sometimes in the previous years, there were outfits where you're like, whoa. Even if you were like, that's like it or not, didn't really matter. It was so bold and taking a chance. This is all just sort of.

Speaker 1:
[09:59] Yeah, it's like the makeup and hair is blah, the clothes are blah. Wild.

Speaker 3:
[10:07] Mike Piazza. It's like it was a little around the river and through the woods that Steve's going to get an interview with Mike Piazza because he's going to do an interview about this. What? It's just like, there's just nothing to say.

Speaker 1:
[10:18] Yeah.

Speaker 3:
[10:19] What else should we talk about? What else is going on?

Speaker 1:
[10:24] I don't know.

Speaker 3:
[10:25] Like I don't. It's like literally we're done.

Speaker 1:
[10:41] We have some trivia.

Speaker 3:
[10:42] Give it.

Speaker 1:
[10:44] Interesting. Here's the trivia. Executive producer John Isendrath becomes the showrunner starting this episode through the series finale in 2000.

Speaker 3:
[10:54] Do you remember him obviously?

Speaker 1:
[10:55] Yes. He is also the one that I said, oh, we have a new showrunner, but I thought he had already taken over.

Speaker 3:
[11:02] Okay.

Speaker 1:
[11:03] It's this episode. Okay. Very nice guy. I'm grateful for his existence obviously, but he is the one that most of us OGs were like, he doesn't feel fit, doesn't feel the same energy, doesn't feel like he knew the show.

Speaker 3:
[11:24] Interesting.

Speaker 1:
[11:25] I think we all felt that way across the board. I'm not sure if it's when he came on. I don't know if we started this season or next season, but at some point soon, the cast gets together and says, this isn't feeling right.

Speaker 3:
[11:38] Really?

Speaker 1:
[11:39] Yeah. We start to request weekly read-throughs.

Speaker 3:
[11:44] Of the script?

Speaker 1:
[11:45] Of the script at our lunchtime. We give up our lunchtime, we ask the writers to come over the hill, meet with us. We do a read-through out loud for the next episode, and then we all have conversations with them. We give notes.

Speaker 3:
[11:59] Wow.

Speaker 1:
[12:00] Something shifted in a way that we were like, we got to save the show.

Speaker 3:
[12:05] Interesting. It felt a little whatever. Same thing we're feeling.

Speaker 1:
[12:10] Yeah. So that's right when he took over. Okay.

Speaker 3:
[12:14] I think that we're just not invested, right? I don't really care if Kelly stays with the doctor or not. Right now, I don't really care if she gets back together with Brandon. I don't really care if you get back together with David.

Speaker 1:
[12:23] Yeah, you're right.

Speaker 3:
[12:24] I mean, I guess I don't really care that Carly left. I don't care about what Steve's doing.

Speaker 1:
[12:32] No. What would make you care this episode? What would you have wanted to see?

Speaker 3:
[12:38] Oh, that's interesting. I maybe would have gotten rid of the child. I really like your idea of making it Devil Wears Prada, like where get rid of the dumb antics with the child star, and maybe really dig into a relationship between you and, I don't know, a female boss or, you know, and not like, again, she's fighting with the female boss, like not just generic, like something sort of interesting. Again, I don't know, because...

Speaker 1:
[13:11] I hate to say this. I feel like the fashion storylines are all going to be antics.

Speaker 3:
[13:18] I mean, they have been so far. I mean, I just think back to even when you were doing that thing in Hawaii, it was just so trying to make you kind of like Pret Falls, and, you know, Lucille Ball, all that stuff.

Speaker 1:
[13:30] Which doesn't feel right. Like, she's embarking on a fashion career, which is really cool.

Speaker 3:
[13:35] And I think they started to realize that you as a person can do comedy, but they're trying to put it into a show where it's like, huh?

Speaker 1:
[13:43] Right. Well, that happened seasons ago, because I was like, hey, who am I? There's all these dramatic actresses. What can I do? And I was like, oh, I can be funny. I'm really funny. So they saw that early on and they asked me and I said, I enjoyed doing comedy. So that was kind of streamed throughout the 10 seasons, but it's not working with the fashion line. How would it work though?

Speaker 3:
[14:08] You know, it's like, well, it's sort of like not funny when you come in as the clown. I mean, I know we're being redundant, but it's like, not funny when you come in with the clown. It's already so crazy that they were going to fire you over this child star on a. And remember, the whole clothing line is based on the kid coloring on your designs.

Speaker 2:
[14:26] I mean, it's all just like, I don't know.

Speaker 1:
[14:28] Sorry. We have another trivia. Intro music, hard to say I'm sorry by the Backstreet Boys.

Speaker 3:
[14:36] You know, the music has definitely leveled up. And I knew there was some sort of a jam. I didn't realize it was the Backstreet Boys. I didn't realize either. They definitely leaned into like the opening music after the, not the opening credits, but like when they start the show. And that thing just feels longer and longer.

Speaker 1:
[14:52] They're like, yeah, we paid the money for this, let's go.

Speaker 3:
[14:55] Which I enjoy sort of trying to watch that to see like, oh, what mall is that? Where's that? What does it still look like that? I don't know.

Speaker 2:
[15:04] I mean, I think, sorry, this is a short episode. It's like, what are we going to talk about?

Speaker 3:
[15:08] Yeah.

Speaker 1:
[15:09] What do we have next week?

Speaker 3:
[15:11] Yeah, what's next week?

Speaker 1:
[15:13] Oh, God, I hope it's better.

Speaker 3:
[15:16] Were you worried at this point, like, we're getting canceled? I don't know. Does that ever cross your mind?

Speaker 1:
[15:21] No. I don't think canceled ever. We didn't, I mean, this is all like kind of our first show. So we didn't know what that would even seem like. It's like, we didn't have a hit show. Oh, that's scary. We had a hit show second season. Okay. And then we were just on the ride.

Speaker 3:
[15:38] And did you know, this is like another weird question, but did you know the ratings were going down? Like, were you guys aware of all that?

Speaker 1:
[15:45] I don't remember. But like I said, we definitely were all super invested in maintaining the integrity of the show that we had built and created together. So that's why we started saying, we want these read throughs, we want to be voices. We know the characters probably better than you do because a new showrunner, new writer, like let us help all work together. And that was really important. And every time, sorry, and that was really important. Everybody stepped up the entire cast. It would be so great after that read through.

Speaker 3:
[16:18] That's interesting. Was it just the core of you though? Like you, Jason, Jenni, maybe Tiffany, Ayen, Brian. Like you're not letting these newcomers, we're not a part of that. Noah.

Speaker 1:
[16:31] No, he was there.

Speaker 2:
[16:32] Oh, wow.

Speaker 3:
[16:33] So really the cast that was like in the credits was there.

Speaker 1:
[16:36] Yeah, the series regulars.

Speaker 2:
[16:38] Yeah.

Speaker 1:
[16:38] And then it'd be nice, we do the read through, everyone make notes as we're going through. And then you'd see people break off into little groupings and speak about their storyline. And so it was nice to see everyone really wanted it to work.

Speaker 3:
[16:54] It's not.

Speaker 1:
[16:55] I know. But I'm wondering when we-

Speaker 3:
[16:58] Yeah, maybe this is when you started and maybe we'll see a difference.

Speaker 1:
[17:02] No, because it's going to take him coming in, being the new showrunner, it's going to take a while for us to be like, wait, wait, wait, this isn't going the right direction. We need to do something.

Speaker 3:
[17:13] So maybe towards the end of season eight. Sorry, we couldn't even turn this to be fun.

Speaker 1:
[17:18] Yeah, it was definitely season eight though. We did it because Jason was there. So yeah. Yeah.

Speaker 3:
[17:21] Yeah.

Speaker 2:
[17:22] Yeah.

Speaker 3:
[17:22] On to next week.

Speaker 1:
[17:24] Speaking of next week, next week is season eight episode 19 crimes and misdemeanors.

Speaker 2:
[17:32] Maybe something exciting will happen.

Speaker 1:
[17:33] Did your law and order was canceled?

Speaker 3:
[17:35] Only organized crime. Was the law and order also canceled? It was on the bubble, I heard. The Chris Maloney one, but I sort of have a secret hope that he'll go back to SVU.

Speaker 1:
[17:45] Oh, good. So it'd be sad never to see him again.

Speaker 3:
[17:48] Yeah, but he pops up.

Speaker 1:
[17:50] Okay.

Speaker 3:
[17:50] Because of organized crime, he sort of pops up and she pops over. So I'm hoping he'll pop up. They're kind of like, will they or won't they? I was trying to remember at this time, like was friends kind of blowing up?

Speaker 1:
[18:04] Yeah. Because we were at the Emmys with them. Yeah.

Speaker 3:
[18:08] I think people were, yeah, they were just sort of like, it was sort of that Seinfeld, Friends era.

Speaker 1:
[18:15] And ER.

Speaker 3:
[18:16] Yeah.

Speaker 2:
[18:17] ER was Thursday night.

Speaker 1:
[18:19] I remember being backstage with like Matthew Perry and George Clooney.

Speaker 3:
[18:25] Yeah. ER, it was like Friends, Seinfeld, Cheers maybe. I don't remember if Cheers was still on. Probably not. I'm probably wrong on that. But like Mad About You, I feel like it was the era of all those shows.

Speaker 1:
[18:36] Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker 3:
[18:37] So it was kind of on its, both were struggling at this point, 90210 and Melrose. So, well, sorry, we weren't more fun today, guys.

Speaker 2:
[18:46] What do we give it?

Speaker 3:
[18:47] I mean, it's like not bad. That's the problem. It's like, I'll still give it like a six or a seven.

Speaker 1:
[18:52] Yeah, I'll give it a six. That's not great.

Speaker 3:
[18:55] Try next week.

Speaker 1:
[18:56] Wait, was Party of Five after us at this point or it was still Melrose? Oh no, Melrose Mondays.

Speaker 2:
[19:02] Yeah.

Speaker 3:
[19:03] I think Party of Five.

Speaker 1:
[19:04] Yeah. That was huge.

Speaker 2:
[19:06] Yeah.

Speaker 3:
[19:07] It's just TV was changing.

Speaker 1:
[19:08] Ally McBeal.

Speaker 3:
[19:09] Yeah, it was changing.

Speaker 1:
[19:11] Oh, not yet. So Courtney Thornton Smith went from Melrose right to Ally McBeal?

Speaker 3:
[19:17] No. No, she left Melrose before it ended.

Speaker 2:
[19:21] All right.

Speaker 3:
[19:21] Well, talk to you later.

Speaker 1:
[19:28] There's some fun shenanigans next week.

Speaker 2:
[19:31] We'll see. We will see.
