Speaker 1:
[00:02] This is a Headgum Podcast.

Speaker 2:
[00:05] Checking Allstate First could save you hundreds on car insurance. That's smart. Not checking the location of the bed on your tour bus before you take off on a cross-country tour. Not smart. The good news is, I do have my own bedroom on the bus. The bad news is, it's directly above the bus' very loud engine.

Speaker 3:
[00:22] Yeah, checking first is smart, so check Allstate First for a quote that could save you hundreds. You're in good hands with Allstate. Potential savings vary subject to terms, conditions, and availability. Allstate North American Insurance Company and Affiliates, Northbrook, Illinois.

Speaker 4:
[00:48] Pretty Little Episode. Welcome to the Handsome Pod's Pretty Little Episode. I'm Fortune Feimster.

Speaker 2:
[00:56] I'm Mae Martin. Yeah.

Speaker 4:
[00:59] So I'm in Belmont. I actually have come back to see my mom, Ginge, because a couple of days ago, as of this airing, she will have had her big appointment, where she is seeing if the radiation balls that were put in her were effective.

Speaker 2:
[01:17] Uh-huh.

Speaker 4:
[01:17] So back in Belmont for that.

Speaker 2:
[01:21] Yes.

Speaker 4:
[01:22] And I don't have the results yet, because this is the future.

Speaker 2:
[01:26] Yeah.

Speaker 4:
[01:26] Well, right.

Speaker 2:
[01:26] You're talking about the future.

Speaker 4:
[01:27] Talking about the future.

Speaker 2:
[01:29] I see. I see.

Speaker 4:
[01:29] Okay.

Speaker 2:
[01:30] Okay.

Speaker 4:
[01:30] Yes.

Speaker 2:
[01:31] And Ginge is there with you now, correct?

Speaker 4:
[01:33] She is right here on her recliner beside me.

Speaker 2:
[01:37] Oh my God. Great. Great. So you're both in your recliners. I'm getting a glimpse into the Feimster.

Speaker 4:
[01:44] That's right. Well, I have to, I have to get y'all's opinion on something.

Speaker 2:
[01:50] Oh, hit me.

Speaker 4:
[01:52] So I am doing a little European run. I already did my Amsterdam show. That was a separate trip. But I'm doing a run of Berlin, Stockholm, Oslo, Copenhagen, London, and Dublin. Now, what do you think I'm going to say?

Speaker 2:
[02:15] I think it's something to do with Ginger.

Speaker 4:
[02:18] You're right, bud. So this one loves to travel.

Speaker 2:
[02:23] Okay.

Speaker 4:
[02:24] And she's like, you're going to Europe? Oh my God, I have never been. So what, all those cities? All but London. You've been to London. So she wants to come.

Speaker 2:
[02:39] But here's the thing, she's 80. Right. Okay. I keep forgetting.

Speaker 4:
[02:43] She's riddled with cancer. She said, I'm not riddled. Your liver has it, hopefully, let hopefully a lot less now.

Speaker 2:
[02:55] I mean, I think of Ginger like very sprightly. And I do. You can tell her that. And I think that she would be amazing, particularly in Berlin. I'm picturing her lined up to go into Burgheim.

Speaker 4:
[03:13] Well, so she, she, her thing is she loves to go to countries and cities that she's never been to before. That that excites her, which I love that for her. I love her adventurous spirit. Ginge is just like Tig in that they like to get on a hop on hop off bus. Oh, that's not hop off. Right. So, what will happen is she will go to these countries. I mean, it'll take an act of God to push her up onto the top of this bus. Yeah. And to get her back down, you know what I mean? And so, I would have to get her, you know, hoist her onto this bus. She'll ride around for a couple of hours and that will be, she'll go, that was an amazing day of sightseeing.

Speaker 2:
[03:59] That's great. I mean, okay, what, I think of all the cities, Dublin would be the best then, because it's like...

Speaker 4:
[04:05] Okay, so here's my suggestion.

Speaker 2:
[04:08] Yeah.

Speaker 4:
[04:09] If we are going to do this, I don't think she can handle all those cities.

Speaker 2:
[04:14] That's a lot.

Speaker 4:
[04:15] Because that's a lot, even for me, I'm going to be exhausted. And she's, you know, has some health things and she's older. So I was saying the compromise here would be to take her to Copenhagen, London and Dublin.

Speaker 2:
[04:30] That's an adventure. That's really good. Yeah, Copenhagen is supposed to be beautiful. I've never been. But Dublin is very like my parents loved it.

Speaker 4:
[04:40] Like you said, you like Dublin a lot.

Speaker 2:
[04:42] Like you go to these. You could just settle in a pub, have a little Guinness. You're hearing these stories from the locals and like, you know, Dylan Thomas and not Dylan Thomas, he's Welsh, you know, all the Irish guys.

Speaker 4:
[04:57] Would you drink a Guinness in Dublin? I would have to. You would have to, okay. Well, so I would fly her out to Copenhagen the day before my show. Yeah. So she'd have two days in Copenhagen. We'd only have one day in London, but then I would extend the trip a day for her to have an extra day in Dublin.

Speaker 2:
[05:16] Okay, yeah.

Speaker 4:
[05:17] And I think that's good.

Speaker 2:
[05:19] Damn, it seems far to go to not have like some extra days to just stick around like.

Speaker 4:
[05:26] What's that? I know, but the problem is, I'm going from city to city to city, country to country to country. And it's a lot of wear and tear. Like people don't realize how much that like turn that quick turnaround is really hard on your body.

Speaker 2:
[05:40] Yeah, maybe. But could you stay another couple days in Dublin?

Speaker 4:
[05:44] And she's coming from Charlotte, so it's not as far as LA.

Speaker 2:
[05:47] That's true.

Speaker 4:
[05:49] So, but you think you think she should go?

Speaker 2:
[05:53] Tell Ginger I'm on board.

Speaker 4:
[05:54] Mae's on board with you going.

Speaker 2:
[05:56] Okay, going where?

Speaker 4:
[05:59] My mom said going where? We don't need to get into that.

Speaker 2:
[06:02] London, Stockholm, and no, London, Copenhagen, and Dublin.

Speaker 4:
[06:06] It would be Copenhagen, London, and Dublin would be the trip. I think that's plenty.

Speaker 2:
[06:12] Can you stay in some fancy hotels and?

Speaker 4:
[06:14] Yeah, I could do all that.

Speaker 2:
[06:17] I think I should do it.

Speaker 4:
[06:17] By the way, it ain't cheap. This is like her make-a-wish.

Speaker 2:
[06:21] Fortune Marie, you can't say that.

Speaker 5:
[06:26] Oh my God.

Speaker 4:
[06:29] Was that bad? Oh no. Because you have cancer.

Speaker 2:
[06:40] Can you tell her that I want to come? When you're busy doing your shows, I'll hang out with her.

Speaker 4:
[06:44] Mae said they'll come and hang out with you while I'm busy.

Speaker 2:
[06:49] It's interesting. Not that pumped about that.

Speaker 4:
[06:51] We'll have to see. My mom is definitely in being off chemo right now. Her health is better.

Speaker 2:
[07:00] Yeah.

Speaker 4:
[07:01] But I'm not going to lie to you. I'm a little concerned about the mobility here. Right. Play it by ear. That's why I'm not trying to extend this anymore. She would be gone for six a week, and I think that would be all she could handle.

Speaker 2:
[07:24] That's great.

Speaker 4:
[07:29] I will be moving at a snail's pace at those three cities.

Speaker 2:
[07:35] But you'll soak up some joy. I got to say, being on tour, I'm like, if I didn't have my friend Matt, it's nice to experience these things with someone too.

Speaker 4:
[07:48] Yeah. I'm going to observe her this weekend and next, and make my final decision.

Speaker 2:
[07:57] But now she knows you're going to be observing her. She's going to be skipping around.

Speaker 3:
[08:01] She better keep a tight ship.

Speaker 2:
[08:03] She's going to be like.

Speaker 4:
[08:08] So we'll see. You're up. You might be seeing Ginge for that second half of the tour. We'll see how her health holds up.

Speaker 2:
[08:15] Fun.

Speaker 4:
[08:16] She said fair.

Speaker 2:
[08:17] Now, may I ask you to your right, is that a stack of CDs?

Speaker 4:
[08:23] Oh, no. That's books.

Speaker 2:
[08:24] Oh, there's books. Okay. Oh, great.

Speaker 4:
[08:27] They're just on a lamp.

Speaker 2:
[08:30] Yes. Okay. I have those lamps too.

Speaker 4:
[08:33] Yeah.

Speaker 2:
[08:34] Okay. I thought it was CDs.

Speaker 4:
[08:35] No, but my mom probably does have CDs somewhere around here.

Speaker 2:
[08:40] Yeah.

Speaker 4:
[08:41] She likes to collect things.

Speaker 2:
[08:43] Yes. Yeah. CDs, books.

Speaker 4:
[08:45] I put collect in quotes. Listen, do you see that, mom?

Speaker 2:
[08:50] You are roasting Ginge today.

Speaker 4:
[08:52] Mae thinks I'm roasting you. Do you feel roasted? You feel okay. I feel okay. Good. It's all with love. Well, should we get some questions?

Speaker 2:
[09:05] Yes, please.

Speaker 4:
[09:05] Yeah.

Speaker 1:
[09:06] Handsome Pod, this is Maggie from Olympia, Washington.

Speaker 2:
[09:10] Hi, Maggie.

Speaker 1:
[09:10] My question for you is, when you get your music going for the day, whether you're driving to work or getting a workout, or for your morning activities when you're going to set your playlist for the day, what drives your decision-making for what kind of music you're going to listen to? Do you choose music based on your mood or the weather, or maybe the mood that you want to be in? Yeah.

Speaker 4:
[09:39] What do you think, Mae?

Speaker 2:
[09:41] It's a really good question. I always listen to the same 12 songs since I was a teenager.

Speaker 4:
[09:46] Really?

Speaker 2:
[09:47] Yeah. I just listen to things that I know every word to. I find that very soothing, but a lot of that stuff is like moody. Then living with Parv and Ama, that really changed my perception of like, they wake up every morning and it's aspirational mood-wise. They put on Whitney Houston.

Speaker 4:
[10:05] Oh, jams.

Speaker 2:
[10:06] They're blasting Robin, like female pop singers, Taylor Swift. It actually, it puts you in a great mood. They're on the way to school, they're singing, In the back of a car, chicken, or whatever.

Speaker 4:
[10:22] In the back of the car.

Speaker 2:
[10:30] Yeah, exactly. It's so good.

Speaker 4:
[10:39] We know all the words.

Speaker 2:
[10:41] Yeah. And definitely a lot of Whitney Houston and Oh, yeah. And Parv's era as well.

Speaker 4:
[10:46] Gotta have the divas.

Speaker 2:
[10:48] Yeah, so that's kind of changed my- I like that. I would never listen to pop before, but now I'm like, gotta start the day with the pop jam. What about you?

Speaker 4:
[10:56] Well, people make fun of me. I guess this is very old school, because I guess the modern thing is to make your own playlist on Spotify, but whatevs. I do that for my shows. I have a pre-show Spotify playlist.

Speaker 2:
[11:12] Yeah, same.

Speaker 4:
[11:13] For whatever reason, I can't get it together for life, so I just go to Pandora.

Speaker 2:
[11:19] What's Pandora?

Speaker 4:
[11:20] Pandora is like you pick a artist radio station and it plays them, but it'll also play people in their genre. Because I like to be served up unexpected things.

Speaker 2:
[11:34] Yeah, me too.

Speaker 4:
[11:34] But apparently people are like Pandora, and I'm like, why not? But I also don't pay for the non-ads, so every 25 minutes, it's like, shut that.

Speaker 6:
[11:46] Allstate.

Speaker 3:
[11:53] Checking Allstate First could save you hundreds on car insurance. That's smart. Not checking what specific scene I'm shooting tomorrow, I'm freaking out. Now I'm scrambling to memorize a two-page soliloquy in my trailer. That's showbiz.

Speaker 2:
[12:08] Yeah, checking first is smart. Check Allstate First for a quote that could save you hundreds. You're in good hands with Allstate. Potential savings vary, subject to terms, conditions, and availability. Allstate North American Insurance Company and affiliates, Northbrook, Illinois.

Speaker 4:
[12:23] So I'll pick, if I'm in a Taylor Swift mood, I'll pick her station, but then it'll serve me up. I don't know, various people like Dua Lipa, Chappell Rome, Teddy Swims, some bops, Pink or whatever. And then maybe I want a Brandy Carlisle. So then it'll be like a Tracy Chapman, or a Chris Stapleton. Those kind of all go together.

Speaker 2:
[12:52] Yeah, yeah.

Speaker 4:
[12:53] But you can, you know, if you're not in the song, you just press the thumbs down and it takes you to the next one.

Speaker 2:
[12:59] Yeah, maybe I'll start doing that. I listen to a lot of like-

Speaker 4:
[13:02] It's more like a surprise.

Speaker 2:
[13:03] I like that. I do, I listen to a lot of oldies, a lot of like Led Zeppelin and stuff.

Speaker 4:
[13:10] I go even older. I will hit up that Etta James radio station and there are some great old jams that come through.

Speaker 2:
[13:17] Oh, I bet. That's a good idea. Now, what's on your pre-show playlist?

Speaker 4:
[13:23] Oh, I have a great pre-show playlist.

Speaker 2:
[13:25] Can you send it to me? Because actually, so many people on this tour are like, I just saw Fortune or they're going to see Tig. I always wonder if we've been in the same venues or what.

Speaker 4:
[13:39] I don't know. It's just a lot of upbeat songs, like a lot of jams.

Speaker 2:
[13:44] Yes. I got some Alanis on mine.

Speaker 4:
[13:47] There you go.

Speaker 2:
[13:48] Yes. Some rousing Alanis.

Speaker 1:
[13:50] I love it.

Speaker 4:
[13:52] Yes. If it's a wintry day and it's overcast, I'll go a little slower. If it's a bright sunny day, I'm doing the aspirational jams. If I have a big meeting and I want to pump up, yes, then I'm doing the big jams.

Speaker 2:
[14:13] Yes. Don't stop believing.

Speaker 4:
[14:17] That's right. Did Maggie tell us what she does?

Speaker 1:
[14:21] I think that I choose music based on the mood that I want to be in. So if it's a rainy, gloomy, cloudy day, I'll often listen to upbeat dance or reggaeton or things that really make music that makes me feel happy. Anyways, love the pod. Thanks so much.

Speaker 4:
[14:40] All right.

Speaker 2:
[14:42] Thanks, Maggie. Yeah, I think I need to start doing that more. But sometimes I want to be in a gloomy mood, so then I would put on like an Elliott Smith or something. Most of the time, it's third eye blind. I can't lie.

Speaker 4:
[14:56] There you go.

Speaker 2:
[14:57] It's my boy, Stephen Jenkins.

Speaker 5:
[15:00] Hi, Mae Fortune and Tig. My name is Lindsay and I'm calling from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I have the privilege of being a pediatric nurse practitioner, working in outpatient neurology and primarily with infants, children, and teens with epilepsy.

Speaker 2:
[15:14] Wow.

Speaker 5:
[15:15] If you worked in healthcare, what specialty do you think you would choose? Maybe dermatology of skin is your thing, or perhaps orthopedic surgery if you think bones are hip. Thanks.

Speaker 4:
[15:26] I think anyone that works in pediatrics is a freaking angel. Holy cow.

Speaker 2:
[15:31] I know. Why do I feel like you're going to say you'd be a boob inspector or something?

Speaker 4:
[15:38] FBI, female body inspector.

Speaker 2:
[15:39] Yeah.

Speaker 4:
[15:42] I was keeping it classy.

Speaker 2:
[15:44] You were. I mean, you got gender-student right there.

Speaker 4:
[15:45] Because Lindsay sounds very professional.

Speaker 2:
[15:48] Yeah.

Speaker 4:
[15:49] Yes, my mom is right here, but she's used to my shenanigans. I will say this. I can't do it this year, but for the last couple of years, I've done this charity event called Big Slick in Kansas City that Jason Sudeikis, and Paul Rudd, and a bunch of guys put on that are from Kansas City. Part of the experience is going to their children's hospital in Kansas City because that's what they're raising money for. You're assigned a different hall and you go visit the kids in the hospital. Oh my gosh, is it heartbreaking? I mean, you're hopeful that you see where the money is going and that's amazing. They raise so much money and it's incredible. Like you visit with these families and just all the stuff they're going through, and what these kids are going through, that would be a tough profession. So my hat is off to anyone who works in that field.

Speaker 2:
[16:48] Yeah, that would be, I mean, they're angels that work in that field. Yeah. I feel like I would, I mean, I still might, like I really want to work with teens with addiction and mental health stuff. Like I want to work with kids in the foster care system and just because I saw what an impact some of those social workers and stuff had on my life and those kids and stuff. I think I could get through to them. I think I could be like in that, what's up Michelle Pfeiffer movie?

Speaker 4:
[17:23] Oh, Dangerous Mines.

Speaker 2:
[17:26] I feel like everyone will be like, these kids are unreachable. You're going to get your heart broken if you get your hopes up going in there and then I go in, I'm like, guess what? Put your books away, we're going to the park kids.

Speaker 4:
[17:36] You're like Morgan Freeman and lean on me.

Speaker 2:
[17:39] Yeah. I take them all to the art gallery and I really inspire them. Then they get home, they start painting and then read a story. Yeah, that's what I want.

Speaker 4:
[17:50] I love it. I think I would just have to work. I think I would love working with old people, in physical therapy or something like that, something non life-threatening.

Speaker 2:
[18:02] Yeah, totally.

Speaker 4:
[18:03] Where you just get to hear fun stories from old people. I don't want to see old people in dire straits either. I just want to enjoy their stories and then bring a little happiness to their lives.

Speaker 2:
[18:15] Yeah, totally. Tig was saying she's going to join a retirement home, move to a retirement home.

Speaker 4:
[18:22] I'm going to help Tig with physical therapy or just pick Tig up like a baby.

Speaker 2:
[18:29] Yeah, seriously. I forget who it was who picked Tig up and broke a rib.

Speaker 4:
[18:34] A fireman.

Speaker 2:
[18:35] A fireman. Alice and Janie, right?

Speaker 4:
[18:38] Yeah, Alice and Janie picked Tig up and broke a rib.

Speaker 2:
[18:42] I really understand the impulse. I do want to pick Tig up as well.

Speaker 4:
[18:47] Tig is tiny. At the Oscars, we took a picture together and I look like Goliath next to Tig. Should we get one more question?

Speaker 2:
[18:58] Sure.

Speaker 6:
[18:59] Hello, handsomes. This is Rachel over in Alaska and my question for you is, has anything terrifying happened to you in nature?

Speaker 4:
[19:09] Yes, in Alaska actually.

Speaker 2:
[19:11] No way.

Speaker 4:
[19:12] Yeah. That's why she's asking because nature stuff goes down in Alaska. Yeah. You're surrounded by nature. I think I did tell this on the pod, but it was when I went flyfishing in the absolute middle of nowhere. In this part of the states is very different than middle of nowhere Alaska. You are beyond off the grid. And we went flyfishing basically in a bear's dining room. And our guide forgot to bring proper equipment to save us should any bear attack happen. And he turned ghost white when he realized he had left his... I mean, we don't want to hurt anything, but if something were to happen, he left all that equipment in the van.

Speaker 2:
[20:11] And did you see a bear?

Speaker 4:
[20:13] By some miracle. I mean, we were being watched out for that day because we were trekking through the woods to the stream. And you have to yell, hey bear, hey bear. Like you have to make a lot of noise so that they stay away. And somehow, and we were there, I'm telling you like six hours and did not see a single bear. It was by a miracle. And so when we realized, when we got, we were fine all day. Like we had the best time. And when we got to the van and saw, because this is a guy who lives there, does this all the time. When we saw his face, we realized how, like what danger we would have been in. He, he-

Speaker 2:
[20:50] Oh my God.

Speaker 4:
[20:51] Yeah. And so I was like, so luckily I was not aware of the danger, but in hindsight.

Speaker 2:
[20:58] Yeah.

Speaker 4:
[20:58] But it could have been a real mess.

Speaker 2:
[21:02] Oh my God. I want to go there so bad, I would be, I would have bear mace strapped to me.

Speaker 4:
[21:08] We just have to be, if you're going in literally a bear's, you know, you don't, no one wants to hurt anything that's their home. You don't want to like tread on them at all. But you know, things happen.

Speaker 2:
[21:19] Yeah. Yeah, they do, girl.

Speaker 4:
[21:21] But Alaska is gorgeous. I had such a great time visiting there.

Speaker 2:
[21:28] I, the first thing that came to mind was in Stanley Park in Vancouver when I was 17 and I had just done a show. And then a group of drag kings were like, do you want to come with us to do mushrooms? And they must have been in their 30s. Me and my friend went with them to the middle of this park and did mushrooms and we all got lost in the pitch black. And we had to wait for the sun to come up. Like it was so dark you couldn't see your hand in front of your face. And there were signs everywhere going beware of bears. And they really felt like we were in the jungle. And then so we went we found like the where you could look at the sea. And so we just sat there and we waited for it to get a little lighter.

Speaker 4:
[22:14] But so you wouldn't fall down the mountain.

Speaker 2:
[22:17] Yeah, but that was spooky.

Speaker 4:
[22:19] That's scary.

Speaker 2:
[22:21] And then I have a memory of being chased by a bear at camp. But I don't know if I invented the memory.

Speaker 4:
[22:26] So we're not positive about that.

Speaker 2:
[22:31] We're not sure. I have a memory of hiding in this little outhouse because a bear came running at me. And then I was in my memory. I can hear it like the Revenant going around that. But I don't know. I might have made it all up.

Speaker 4:
[22:46] Hilarious.

Speaker 2:
[22:47] Let's hear Rachel's answer. I feel like Rachel's gonna have a good story.

Speaker 4:
[22:50] I bet.

Speaker 6:
[22:51] So my answer is yes. I forget that I live on an island full of huge bears and every year I go for a meditative hike and I don't make enough noise and I bump into a bear. And so far, it's all been good. Anyway, I love you all. Thank you for the giggles. And yeah, bye.

Speaker 4:
[23:18] There you go. Be careful, Rachel.

Speaker 2:
[23:20] Every year she's bumping into a bear. Geez, Louise.

Speaker 4:
[23:25] I was going to say to Lindsey, I'm going to be in Toronto May 8th at Massey Hall. So hopefully, Lindsey gets a break from work.

Speaker 2:
[23:33] So many of my friends are going to see you. I'm at Massey Hall April 4th. So you know, I'm leaving a note for you somewhere secret. I'm going to find somewhere. Can I? Will you actually look for it?

Speaker 4:
[23:46] Yeah, I'll look for it.

Speaker 2:
[23:48] I mean, you don't sound that good.

Speaker 4:
[23:49] No, no. Yes. I know. I think I just I was thinking, I hope I remember. You might have to remind me.

Speaker 2:
[23:57] Okay. Yeah. Maybe Thomas, can you help?

Speaker 4:
[24:00] Oh, and don't forget May 4th, we have our own LA show for Handsome.

Speaker 2:
[24:06] Yeah. For Netflix is a joke.

Speaker 4:
[24:07] At the Wiltern. So get your tickets for that if you haven't already.

Speaker 2:
[24:11] That'll be great. And check out maymartin.net. I'm on tour and keep sending us questions and your advice to speakpipe.com/handsomepod.

Speaker 4:
[24:20] Oh, May 15th, Reading, Pennsylvania. That was a new show. And then maybe you'll see me and my mom in Europe.

Speaker 2:
[24:26] Yeah.

Speaker 4:
[24:27] Well, what another fun pod.

Speaker 2:
[24:30] Always a pleasure and a joy and have fun on your visit in North Carolina.

Speaker 4:
[24:37] Thanks, buddy. I'll talk to you soon. Until then, keep it pretty handsome.

Speaker 2:
[24:44] Handsome is hosted by me, Mae Martin, Tig Notaro and Fortune Feimster. The show is produced, recorded and edited by Thomas Ouellette. Email us at handsomepod at gmail.com and please follow us on social media at handsomepod.

Speaker 2:
[25:08] Checking Allstate First could save you hundreds on car insurance. That's smart. Not checking what time the sun actually rises when someone offers to wake you up to see the sunrise. I'm so tired. Yes, the 7 a.m. sunrise is beautiful, but so is a good night's sleep and now I'm an exhausted sausage.

Speaker 3:
[25:25] Yeah, checking first is smart. So check Allstate First for a quote that could save you hundreds. You're in good hands with Allstate. Potential savings vary subject to terms, conditions and availability. Allstate North American Insurance Company and Affiliates, Northbrook, Illinois.
