Speaker 5:
[01:33] Hi, Dr. Laura.

Speaker 3:
[01:35] Hi.

Speaker 5:
[01:38] So, I'm calling today because I am in a pain, in a place where I'm 45 years old. I have, I was a single mom. I have a successful career, never settled down. I don't have much family. Since I'm 18, I suffered with endometriosis. I had 14 operations. Then I just ended up with chronic pain that never went away. So here I am, 45 years old. I beat cancer three years ago, lost most of my muscle. I still do my job every day, but everything is getting harder and harder to do. I also had a car accident, and now I have a back and a neck injury on top of everything. Today I went to a new physical therapist, a new pain doctor. This is probably the 14th one I've had in my life. I can't even count them. And I've done a lot of research with, like between depression and chronic pain. And I'm sorry. I've found that, I guess, depression and chronic pain kind of loop together. And I want to get out of both of them. But I know that after a lifetime of living like this, the idea of being pain free is probably not going to happen for me. And I want to try to find a way to live and let go of the things that I know I'm not going to be able to do and be okay with living every day, just doing the best I can. You know, like, I think I get the press that I don't do the things that I used to do. And I just kind of, everything in my life feels like a major task, you know, even just brushing my teeth and getting out of bed. And I really want to keep living and living good. And I wanted to see if you had any advice for somebody like me.

Speaker 3:
[04:11] Let's go back to your uterus in 14 surgeries. What did they do 14 times?

Speaker 5:
[04:18] They removed tumors, endometrial cells, and I finally had a full hysterectomy when I was 34. But they kept going in and removing tumors that kept growing. So I had very bad endometriosis, a whole bunch of stuff that they diagnosed me with when I was younger. But it was basically everything was supposed to help my pain and everything just made my pain much worse.

Speaker 3:
[07:13] Well, on a scale of 10, tell me through the day how the pain changes through the day, 10 being worse.

Speaker 5:
[07:23] So in the morning, I wake up, I'm very stiff, I feel very depressed every morning. And the pain, it depends on what I did the day before. So if I lay in bed for two days, I can't move the next morning, so I'll be in pain. And then everything I do throughout the day, the pain will get more and more gradual. And I just basically either push through it or I revert and just go back to bed. And then when I go to work, I manage convention centers. So when I get to work, if I have to be on my feet for 13 or 14 hours, I usually can't walk for the next three days, my pain will be at a nine or a 10. Sometimes by the end of the night, my pain will be at like a nine or a 10, and I could barely make it to my car. So it really depends on what I do. If I work from home, I can get up, try to walk and move and stretch a little bit. And then it really varies, you know, based on what I do. My daughter, she's like a personal trainer.

Speaker 3:
[08:43] You just said something very important. You said it's based on what you do. So you already know standing for those hours is stupid. So you arrange for somebody else to do that. You're right. It's all based on what you're going to do. If you lay in bed for two days, you can barely walk. I got to tell you that aging does the same thing. I watch a movie, get off the couch, and it's like, oh, God, I have to straighten everything out. I used to get up and work out, do the radio show for three hours, shoot pool for an hour, play tennis for two hours, and then have dinner. That was only like 10 years, 15 years ago. We age, so I have chosen to be more careful choosing what I'm going to do to minimize things that will definitely cause pain. You have this to a much more extreme, but it's the same problem. How can I arrange my day? To minimize, and you're not doing that. You're trying to live as though you were 30 years younger. You have to make some very big changes and be okay with them. I'm okay that I can't get up and work out, do a three-hour thing, shoot, pull, play tennis. I'm okay that I can't do that. You know why? Because I used to. That's it. You can't do it forever. Nothing is forever. We don't even live forever. So I plan my day to minimize impact. You really have to start doing the same, and this job is killing you.

Speaker 5:
[10:47] Okay.

Speaker 3:
[10:48] Also, part two, I would like you to take Tai Chi, T-A-I-C-H-I, Tai Chi. It's very gentle, slow, controlled maneuvers. It's not like yoga where you have to go into really radical positions. I wouldn't recommend that. But something like Tai Chi, it's peace for your soul, it's peace for your mind, and it moves your body, loosens things up, moisturizes your joints. You should be taking a lot more collagen. I think these are the things you need to do so that you can have a better quality of life. You need a better quality of life, sweetheart. You get up each day knowing the same shit is going to happen. That's why you get up depressed. Nothing's going to change today. It's going to be another miserable freaking day. Well, only if you don't decide then was then, now is now, and I have to handle now. So Tai Chi, really make your decisions about what you're going to do, and you may want to look for, talk to your bosses about alternatives to the physicality that goes into your job. I mean, you're very talented. You have a lot, you can teach other people about how to do the job, but it's time you take better care of yourself. We can't ever do what we used to do. We can't, none of us. I can't. I don't jump anymore. I've raised a sailboat, and I used to just jump off the boat. Hell no, I walk off carefully. It's all different now. I'm okay with that because that way, my pain is much less. You are much more extreme than the worst I've ever experienced. I appreciate that, but I don't think that means that these suggestions are not good for you.

Speaker 5:
[13:09] All right. I actually just saw something about Tai Chi this morning. It's funny that you mentioned that.

Speaker 3:
[13:15] Isn't that weird? Whoa. Every day, 15 minutes of Tai Chi. That's all. It will change you because it changes some of the synaptic activity in your brain because that's the part that registers what hurts. You know, they've told you soldiers will be running and they'll get a bullet in the leg and they won't even notice it and they'll keep running? Well, there's all that adrenaline, but the brain is not accepting those signals yet. So we can play with the brain a bit.

Speaker 5:
[13:58] Okay, yeah.

Speaker 3:
[14:02] We can't fix this, but we can sure the hell make it better. But part of it is that you have to stop pushing yourself this hard. You have to accept the limitation.

Speaker 5:
[14:17] Yeah.

Speaker 3:
[14:21] And I have come to accept the limitations. I come with AJ.

Speaker 5:
[14:32] Yes, you're right. Thank you.

Speaker 3:
[14:35] You're welcome. And I wish you would call me from time to time. Good, bad, or indifferent. Just keep me posted.

Speaker 5:
[14:43] Thank you.

Speaker 3:
[14:44] See how this is going. But wherever you saw the Tai Chi thing, go sign up. You can do it at home. I mean, it's on the net.

Speaker 5:
[14:51] Yeah, it was at home actually. So, okay. I'm going to try it. All right.

Speaker 3:

[16:02] Why have I asked my electrician I found on angie.com to bury my pet hamster Nibbles in our yard for me? Because I was so moved by how carefully he buried my electrical wires, I knew I could trust him to bury my sweet Nibbles after his untimely end. Huh, Nibbles. Gone too soon. May he scurry in peace.

Speaker 6:
[16:20] Hey, sorry about your pet, but I just wire stuff.
