Speaker 1:
[00:04] Hey there, friends, I wonder have you ever had your own dad tell you that he's proud of you? I remember hearing that from my dad for the first time, and it was truly life-giving. We're going to be hearing that today in Jesus' life as we continue our God's story series. We're in episode 33 of that series, and we'll be looking at Matthew 3 verses 13–17. So, get out your Bibles if you have them. We'll be digging into that in just a moment. Before we do, I need to thank today's episode sponsor. We have a Daily Sponsor who is an anonymous listener and who is thankful for God's abundant and unceasing provision. Well, thank you, friend, for being a supporter of the Morning Mindset financially. Friends, if you would like to sponsor an episode just like this friend did, you can do so in your name, anonymously, or even in memory of someone, go to morningmindsetmedia.com/dailysponsor to find out how you can do that. That link will also be in the description for this episode. Okay, Matthew chapter 3 is where we're going to begin. But before we do, let us pray so we can receive from God the help that we need to understand His word. Our Father, that is our goal and desire. We want to be led of you as we read your word. Help us to understand what's going on here in Jesus' baptism. It's in your name we pray. Amen. Matthew chapter 3 verses 13 through 17, it says, Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan, to John to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, I need to be baptized by you. And do you come to me? But Jesus answered him, let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he consented. And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him. And behold, a voice from heaven said, This is my beloved son, with whom I am well pleased. Now, wow, what a scene. Could you imagine being there to see Jesus, the Messiah, baptized in the Jordan River? And after he comes up out of the water, the heavens are open, the Holy Spirit descends on him somehow visibly, and God himself speaks from heaven, saying how pleased he is with his own beloved son. Friends, this baptism of Jesus, he says, was to fulfill all righteousness. In other words, Jesus is carrying out every step in obedience to his father, and baptism was one of those things. Now, might I encourage you, if you have never been baptized after coming to faith in Jesus. Now, I'm not talking about as a child, some sort of a dedicatory thing, or even a thing in your church that made it seem like as a child, you're getting saved. That really is not the biblical pattern of baptism. Baptism is a profession that you believe in Jesus Christ, you are following after him. Just as Jesus was baptized here, confessing that he is following after his father. Jesus is our model. So if you've never been baptized, I encourage you to do that. But I also want you to notice here, we see God, the Trinity, in its entirety in this one passage. We see Jesus, the Son, being baptized. We see the Spirit of God descending on him, and we hear the voice of the Father, speaking, this is my beloved Son. This is one of the cases where we can see all three persons of the Trinity in one scene. And friends, the unity of the Trinity, the love that they share for each other is a demonstration of what God wants for his people today, you and I, to be unified with one another, loving one another, caring for one another, just as God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit do. Lord, God, guide us to understand the model that Jesus sets for us in baptism, but also the model that you set for us in being the Holy Trinity and being united as you are. Though you are one, you are three, and you express your love in that unity and in that diversity. Lord, guide us as your church to do the same, that we may demonstrate to others the glories of our great God. Well, friends, that is a wrap for this episode of the Morning Mindset.
