Speaker 1:
[00:02] You don't want it, you don't need it, but you're going to get it anyway. The Kevin Sheehan Show. Here's Kevin. Tommy's here, I am here. The show's presenting sponsor is always Window Nation, 86690 Nation or windownation.com if you need new windows. Tommy, a few emails to open up the show on this NFL Draft first round day.

Speaker 2:
[00:30] A lot of business today, buddy.

Speaker 1:
[00:31] Yeah, we've got a lot of business, but guess what?

Speaker 2:
[00:35] That's right.

Speaker 1:
[00:35] We're going to go backwards first. This from Tim to open up the show. Tim writes, Kevin, you can get this surgery for your dog for a lot less. You just have to go further east across the Bay Bridge to Easton. I'm not going to Easton for this surgery. I actually wrote him back and I said, well, how much less? And he said roughly $3,000 less. That's significant. Okay.

Speaker 2:
[01:07] It doesn't cost that much in toll to cross the Bay Bridge.

Speaker 1:
[01:10] No, it doesn't. For those that missed the show the other day, I had just gotten back from taking my dog, Laney, to the orthopedic vet office. And she has, for the second time in her short life, she's six years old, she has a torn CCL, they call it for a dog, but it's a torn ACL. And I have to get surgery for her. We have to get surgery for her. We did this three years ago on her other knee, and now we have to do it on this knee. And I was just kind of blown away at the price. I mean, I remember what it was from three years ago, but when I saw the estimate forwarded to me, I'm like, really? $7,800? And here's the thing, with English Bulldogs, and that's what Laney is, you really can't get insurance for them, because they have a lot of health problems, and a lot of injury-related problems during their life, and it's expensive to get insurance. So we don't have insurance, pet insurance, for her. I don't know that, I mean, I drove to Annapolis the other day. It wasn't even all the way to Annapolis, it was on the, you know, kind of the southern outskirts of Annapolis for this appointment, and it took me an hour and 15 minutes to get home from there.

Speaker 2:
[02:33] I know.

Speaker 1:
[02:34] From Easton, it would be, you know, if I didn't-

Speaker 2:
[02:37] Well, you could make it, you could make Easton a wonderful town.

Speaker 1:
[02:40] It is a wonderful town.

Speaker 2:
[02:41] To make it an Eastern Shore weekend.

Speaker 1:
[02:42] I like, I like that area of our state. It's a beautiful area. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Anyway, I also-

Speaker 2:
[02:49] Look, I have a serious question to ask you about.

Speaker 1:
[02:51] Okay.

Speaker 2:
[02:52] Okay.

Speaker 1:
[02:53] Yeah.

Speaker 2:
[02:54] Does Laney have a DNR? Do not resuscitate.

Speaker 1:
[03:00] Honestly, I don't know.

Speaker 2:
[03:02] Well, you might want to work that out with her.

Speaker 1:
[03:06] Work that out with her? To ask her if she wants it?

Speaker 2:
[03:10] Yeah. You'll, there's no tell what lengths you'll go to to keep this dog alive.

Speaker 1:
[03:15] Oh, I would go to all kinds of lengths to keep this dog alive. Yeah, no. Our last dog, I would not have wanted the DNR. Wait, what does it stand for? Do not resuscitate?

Speaker 2:
[03:29] Do not resuscitate.

Speaker 1:
[03:31] Yeah, I probably would have wanted the DNR with our last dog. Yeah. No, I mean, I don't even like to think that way. She's got, she's only halfway through her life. Why did you put that into the conversation? I don't want to think about that. I don't know if she has it or not. My wife would probably know.

Speaker 2:
[03:50] There's no length you won't go to, it sounds like, to help this dog. And that's admirable.

Speaker 1:
[03:58] Well, I just said that driving, you know, further and over the bridge, and you're right, Easton is lovely, St. Michael's is lovely. That whole area is a beautiful area of our state. And I say our state, I don't even live in Maryland anymore. I live in DC. But I'm going to have to go to drop her off. Then I'm going to have to go back to pick her up. Then I'm going to have to go back in to get the stitches out or, you know, whatever that part is. I remember there were multiple trips involved. So, yeah, I think I'll probably stick with the guy that did it the first time and did it very well. And I think I told you this, he actually said to me after the last one said to us, she's going to do the other one now that she's done this one. The other one's eventually could get torn or partially torn. And typically it happens in about a year and a half. Well, it last three years it happened, three years later. All right, enough. Well, actually I had one more email about Laney. This from Devin. Devin writes, Kevin, I listened to you and Tom talk about your dog and her upcoming surgery. The price you're paying is a deal. So Devin actually thinks the opposite of Tim. Oh, he said, I paid over $10,000 for a surgery to repair a ruptured CCL and patella for my English bully. Hope she does well. Thank you for that, Devin. So I actually feel much better after Devin's email.

Speaker 2:
[05:28] Insanity loves company.

Speaker 1:
[05:31] This from Omar. Omar writes, Kevin, that was the most incredible breakdown of centers since Tom ranked Willis Reed number one on his all time list. LOL. In all seriousness, your guest was one of the best I've ever heard on the NFL draft. Thank you for that, Omar. Omar is referring to Cole Kublick, who I actually had on the radio show yesterday and then ran some of it on the podcast yesterday. Cole's with the SEC Network. I've had him on the show a ton over the last few years during the football season and before the draft. And Tommy, he did a breakdown of the center position that literally I've never heard anybody do it. He mentioned at least 12 centers and had information on all of them. Now he played center at Auburn in college, so he's sort of predisposed to liking the position. But what came out of it was very interesting because he says this is a very deep position in this draft and he believes there are 7 to 8 week 1, year 1 starting centers in this NFL draft. And that made me think, well, maybe Adam Peters and Company, when they let Tyler Biotish go, maybe Tyler Lindnerbaum was Plan A, but if they didn't get him, Plan B was they think they can add a starting center in the draft. So...

Speaker 2:
[07:05] That would make sense. Certainly not with the number 7 pick though, right?

Speaker 1:
[07:10] No, no, no, no, no, no, no. And Cole said the run will start somewhere probably in the third round or maybe even on day three. And they do have, you know, as of now, number 71 in the third round. He thought maybe in the 60s or 70s that run would start. And he actually mentioned one player that I talked about, this Parker Brailsford from Alabama, who's kind of a fit for the offensive scheme that David Blow's likely to run. And, you know, high quality intangibles plus, and I looked it up and talked about it on the podcast yesterday, a very high RAS score, a very high relative athletic score, top 10% all time at the position of center. And we know that Adam Peters loves himself some athleticism at every position. So keep that in mind. Parker Brailsford starting center Alabama this year, maybe tomorrow night. But we're focused now on tonight. I know I ask you this every year, but just for reminder's sake, do you like tonight and this weekend?

Speaker 2:
[08:17] I don't dislike it. I don't embrace it like other people do, but I'll watch it. I think it's interesting to watch the other draft choices as they develop, to listen to the commentators. I don't mind it. You know, as far as manufactured events, it's not offensive to me.

Speaker 1:
[08:43] What is offensive to you among the manufactured events?

Speaker 2:
[08:48] I don't know.

Speaker 1:
[08:48] I'll tell you this.

Speaker 2:
[08:49] The Wizards basketball game?

Speaker 1:
[08:51] Well, I'll tell you this. I mean, the indie combine to me is boring and I can't believe the ratings it does. I just, I cannot believe the ratings. The schedule announcement is so much more interesting to me about when the... Yeah. I mean, even if I didn't do and wasn't the pioneer of the mock schedule. By the way, everybody does a mock schedule now. I mean, people send me stuff all the time from our own team. Washington has some mock schedule contest that they're running. I wonder if there would have been a way for me to patent that idea 15 years ago. Probably not. You can't really patent an idea. You can patent a process. All right. Look I like the NFL draft. I think it's very entertaining. I think tonight is incredibly entertaining, especially... Look I'm kind of a Mel Kuiper guy. I'm a little bit old school. I know some of you younger listeners like, oh, Mel Kuiper, he doesn't know anything. Like anybody knows anything. Nobody knows anything about tonight. They're all guessing wildly and they'll be wrong much more than they'll be right. As I've said before, this is a miss and sometimes hit event. This is a mostly miss and sometimes hit event. But I think going back in time, when this first started to become super popular, to hear guys like Kuiper and then eventually guys like McShea and others, and the amount of knowledge they had acquired in preparation for this was super impressive. Again, they were going to be wrong two-thirds of the time. But it was incredible how much research and how much, you know, work goes into this. I mean, these guys that have turned this into a business, you know, a year-round business, I mean, it's a lot, a lot, you know? And I think that that's impressive. And I think the drama of the night, you know, especially on a night like tonight, we talked about this the other day, but this is one of the most uncertain drafts from Mendoza after Mendoza on that we've seen. I mean, I did this yesterday and I've got to add somebody to the mix. Yesterday, I mentioned seven different players recently have been mocked to Washington by some pretty credible people just in the last week. And now I'll add an eighth to that because danieljeremiahnfl.com mocked wide receiver Arizona State Jordan Tyson to Washington at seven. So that's now Tate, Love, Bain, Delain, Bailey, Downs, and now Jordan Tyson along and Sonny Styles. Eight different players mocked to a team in the top ten is highly, highly unusual. So it will be dramatic tonight to see how it plays out.

Speaker 2:
[12:04] And it's not only that. We talked about this the other day. Teams have less time to make their decisions. The time is reduced from ten minutes to eight minutes. So you could see a sense of panic sometimes taking place here.

Speaker 1:
[12:23] I think in today's day and age, with the preparation that goes into it, with the simulations and probably AI being a part of this now as well, I think a team would be hard pressed to be presented in the top ten anyway, with a situation that they hadn't planned for. I mean, they've simulated every possibility. I mean, for Washington at 7, there are 6 teams. I mean, I'm sure they've taken 11, 12 players and 50 possible trades and come up with what's on the board at 7 for them. I doubt they're going to be surprised by anything, but your point is a good one, and it's the wrong year to switch it because there is so much uncertainty. And there is a possibility that somebody along the way earlier than usual in the draft could be surprised. But yeah, I mean, even at number 2, I mean, you see it almost mixed between Bailey and Reese to the Jets. And I guess Jay Glazer has been making the rounds and talking about how he's got a lot of information that he can't really, he's not ready to report on, but it could be a blockbuster trade at the very top of the draft. Now, that's not the Raiders. The Raiders, I mean, that would be the all time stunner if they traded number 1, instead of taking Fernando Mendoza. But the Jets certainly could be in play, and Arizona for sure would love to trade back from 3. I think, Tommy, that's where a lot of the intrigue for Washington begins at number 3, because that seems to be the trigger point. The Jets, if they stay at 2, are going to take one of the two pass rushers, Bailey or Reese. There seems to be some consensus on that. Not which one, but it'll be one of the pass rushers. And then Arizona, there's been so much Jeremiah love talk, but are the Cardinals who just signed Tyler Algier in free agency. He's an excellent back, and they already have James Connor. Given all of their needs in a division with the Rams, the Seahawks and the 49ers, they have so many needs. Are they going to take a running back at 3, when they already have a really strong running back room? I doubt it. I think they're looking to trade. If they end up picking, it'll be interesting. But the trade up, I think, would be for the other defensive end that's available, if somebody trades into that spot. But that's going to sort of dictate, from that point forward, who's available. Because if it is loved to the Cardinals, and then Stiles goes to Tennessee, and the Giants take Tate, and then the Browns take an offensive lineman or trade, you know, it's going to be limited pickings. I say based on, it's based on what I think a lot of our fans want. I think a lot of our fans want Jeremiah Love or Sonny Stiles at 7. For me, and we're going to get to our predictions here in this opening segment. I'm pretty sure I've shared this with all of you already. But for me, there are two players that I would stick and pick at 7. If neither one of these two players is there at 7, I would hope to be able to trade back and pick up, you know, more picks like to 11 or to 13, 11 with the Dolphins, 13 with the Rams, 16 with the Jets and potentially, you know, certainly 16 with the Jets. This would have to be a part of the deal, but hopefully replace the second rounder that we don't have and still have a chance to pick a really good player. The two players that I would stick and pick are David Bailey, who is my favorite player in this draft and Ruben Bain Jr. And those are the two players that if they are there, I want one of those two players selected. Bailey is likely not to be there. There's a chance that Bain is there. Anybody else, I would prefer a trade back, but if they can't trade back, because it does take two to make a trade, then in order, I would go Stiles, Tate, Downs, or Downs Delane. So one of those four players, if they were to take, I would be okay with. I'm not a Jeremiah Loveguy. I've mentioned that over and over again. I think he's going to be really good. And if they end up selecting him, I'm going to be excited about him being teamed in the backfield with Jaden Daniels. Because he's going to be a really good NFL back. But I think that position, if I'm taking it in the top 10, it's got to be somebody that I'm convinced is going to be transcendent. He's going to be elite. And I think he's going to be very, very good. But I don't think he's going to be at the level of the truly elite backs in the NFL. That's just me. It's a minority opinion. I know that it is. Because every draft expert has Jeremiah Love in the top three. I had Logan Paulson on the show yesterday. He's got Jeremiah Love as his number one prospect in this draft. I don't think he's going to be there. But Bain and Bailey for me. And if not, I'd love to see a trade back. We can do our predictions if you're ready for predictions. I know you came up with one for Washington at 7. It can be anything. It can be a player. It can be a trade back and another player that you pick. So let's hear it. What's Thom Loverro's Washington prediction for tonight?

Speaker 2:
[18:31] Well, like I wrote in my column the other day, I think that if you believe the commanders under Jayden Daniels are going to have a successful run of competitive seasons, they're not going to get many more opportunities to pick in the top ten. Number seven, I mean, you're probably going to get a good player. Doesn't always the case, but your odds certainly increase. So I think they need to take advantage of it and stick with it. I would like them to pick, and I think they will pick, Cardinal Tate, wide receiver. I mean, I think if Love is there, they pick him, but I don't think he'll be there, and I think then they would pick Tate.

Speaker 1:
[19:19] Okay.

Speaker 2:
[19:20] To be honest with you, if neither of those guys were there, and I know this is, he's not slotted this high, I'd pick Mackay Lemon, Ben.

Speaker 1:
[19:31] Why do you like Mackay Lemon?

Speaker 2:
[19:34] He's the Lednicoff winner, the best wide receiver in football.

Speaker 1:
[19:37] Yeah, he was very good. Now, he is a pure inside slot receiver.

Speaker 2:
[19:42] I know he is. I know he is, and that diminishes him as far as draft selection. He's slotted a lot of mocks to go 11th, but I'd have no problem picking him 7th, because I want to help my quarterback.

Speaker 1:
[20:00] The comp is Amon Ross St. Brown, and if he's Amon Ross St. Brown, you take him 7th, period. I think he's going to be very good. I actually really like Cooper Jr. as that inside guy as much as I like Lemon, because I think Cooper is even more versatile.

Speaker 2:
[20:17] Now, let me just say that Jordan Tyson, I know is the second ranked one, but I heard you on the radio this morning. He's got some injury concerns.

Speaker 1:
[20:27] Yeah. Jordan Tyson has been injured a lot during his college career. Jordan Tyson may be, I don't think this is the case, but a lot of people believe he is the most talented receiver in the draft. I think it's Tate. I do, but I think it's close. I like Jordan Tyson. I like him a lot. But he's been injured a lot. He's missed basically at this point, a third of his potential college games, both at Colorado and at Arizona State. He's had a severe knee injury going back a few years ago. He's had hamstring issues. I think it was the 33rd team that did something not that long ago, and I may have mentioned it. I know I mentioned it on radio. But they essentially studied the injuries for every position, and if you have them in college, what's the likelihood that you're going to also have them in the NFL? And wide receiver, if you're injured in college, it totally carries over into the NFL. You end up being an injured player more often than not in the NFL. So I would be leery of Tyson because of those reasons. Interestingly, before I get to my prediction on what will happen tonight, I've been giving you guys this, I think, all week long, because the mock drafts are all over the place. So I typically turn to the boys in the desert or in this case, the boys offshore to see what they think. And MyBookie's updated odds on number seven overall. Carnell Tate yesterday was the favorite at plus 224. But I think it was Jeremiah Love was the second favorite. Well, now today, right now, and I'm looking at it as of 130, you know, it's 134 p.m. as we are recording this. Jordan Tyson is the second favorite at plus 390. Then it's Sonny Stiles at plus 450. Love at plus 470. Delane at plus 600 and Bain at plus 800. And then Downs is plus 900. And then there's a big fall off to the next group of players. But Tate is a basically, you know, just over a two to one favorite plus 224. And then it's Tyson. And that is at MyBookie.ag or mybookie.com. If you decide that you want to bet on the draft, I would do it at MyBookie. They'll also have everything for the NBA and NHL playoffs as well. But make sure that when you go to MyBookie, you use my promo code DCRELOAD. And they'll give you a 50% cash bonus on your deposit. So if you deposit 200 bucks, you get another $100 added into your account. You'll have $300 to wager with. mybookie.com or MyBookie.ag promo code DCRELOAD. All right. My prediction, Tommy, is that I think of the two players that I like the most in this draft, Bailey and Bain. I like Mendoza a lot too. I actually really think Fernando Mendoza is a really good quarterback prospect. I was having this conversation, I think, on radio today, and I tried to come up with where he would have gone in the draft two years ago, in 2024, with all of the quarterbacks getting taken. If he were coming off a national championship season, leading Indiana to the 2024 national championship, I don't think he would have gone any worse than fourth behind Caleb Williams, Jaden Daniels and Drake May. And I think it's even possible he could have gone third overall, in front of May. I like him a lot. This isn't a quarterback draft, and I don't think he's being picked number one just because he's the only quarterback worthy of a first round pick, and the team at the top of the list this year needs a quarterback. I think he's really, really good, and will be very good. Now, the personality is a bit strange, and maybe there's some things that I don't know, that teams know, that could prevent him from becoming the best quarterback or version of himself as a quarterback, but we'll see. So for me, I think Ruben, I don't think Bailey will be there at 7, but I do think Ruben Bain Jr. There's a chance he will be there at 7. And the reason that he may be there at 7 is he measured with very short arms at the Indy Combine. And a lot of teams and a lot of analytics departments with teams, they don't like short arms on edge pass rushers. But if the tape is the only thing you watched of all of these top prospects, you'd be hard pressed to say that anybody on tape was more impressive than Ruben Bain Jr. in college football last year. He was a dominant player. He was a brute physical force as strong as anybody that's played that position. He's quick twitch, he's got big strong hands. I mean, put it this way, you know, yesterday, Logan Paulson called him a psychopath. And that's the way he plays. He is nonstop ferocious. And he played against future offensive linemen in the NFL. And he was the best player on the field in so many of Miami's games, including some of those playoff games. I'm just going to go with the idea that there's so many different players being mocked to Washington. It's wide open, but that at the end of the day, if they're on the clock and Ruben Bain Jr. is available, and I think there's a chance he is, that Adam Peters is going to take the best player available. And he would be that. So my prediction is Washington selects Ruben Bain Jr. at number seven overall. And if they do, I'm going to be really excited about that pick. And I have given it thought in terms of the short arms. I've given it thought in terms of, you know, will Durante Jones be more of a base three four team, like, you know, Brian Flores was in Miami. But this dude, if he's on the board at seven, and Bailey's off the board, and Reese's off the board, Mendoza's off the board, I can't imagine that they would have anybody higher rated on their board unless they are, like other teams might be, the short arms mark them down significantly. Yeah, that's my pick, Ruben Bain Jr. And if it's not Ruben Bain Jr. at that point, I really do hope there's an opportunity to trade back, you know, if Bain or Bailey aren't there. Because I'll go with volume over, you know, taking a swing, because I just don't know that there are swings that are going to connect in this draft, not many of them. I mean, most of these drafts, even in the top 10, you know, it's three or four players out of the top 10 that end up being home runs. Not even three or four, but three or four that end up being really good on average. Yeah, I'm talking about the top 10. So the odds are, they're probably gonna whiff on number seven if they stay there and pick it. Now, you know, there are examples, 2022 trading back, you know, and taking Jahan Dotson and getting all those picks didn't work out. It would have been better to take Kyle Hamilton. And I was a big Kyle Hamilton believer in that draft, and I wanted them to select Kyle Hamilton. And if you go back to 2010, they traded back and passed on JJ Watt and selected Ryan Carrigan. If there's a player that they think is gonna be, you know, a perennial all-pro player, take the player. But if they get there and that player doesn't exist, they don't think they have a solid first-round grade on what's left, I hope they trade back. But my prediction, Ruben Bain. Ruben Bain and your prediction, Carnell Tate. All right. I'm gonna give you some players in this draft that I really, really like. First round and then day two, night two, and then day three. Tommy had a story today about the Nats that's very interesting, and it pertains to the sale price of the team. So we've got some more show to go. We'll get to it after these words from a few of our sponsors. Okay, guys, I'm about to tell you about the most incredible, unforgettable gift you can get mom this Mother's Day. All right, I'm going to talk a little bit about the draft here, Tommy, and give everybody some players that I like. I know that every year typically I do running backs in particular because I've had some success in picking running backs. Not so much last year, but previous years. By the way, I do like Jeremiah Love a lot as a prospect. I just don't like him as a top 10 running back. I mean, I definitely think he's a first round running back. I mean, he is gifted and he's going to be a very good NFL back. I really like Judarian Price, the other Notre Dame back as well. Mike Washington tested off the charts. He's interesting out of Arkansas. But a couple of guys that I really like probably, you know, night two, day three, I'm a big Jonah Coleman fan from Washington. You know, he may not have all of the athletic attributes, but man, is he a really good in-between-the-tackles, vision runner. He's like 5'9, but like 220. He's powerful, but he's got really quick, decisive feet. I like him a lot. Like I think he's gonna be a steal for somebody, especially if it's on day three. And I really like Penn State's running backs, plural, Singleton and Allen. But I like Allen more. I think Allen's got a chance to be a really good back. Those are the guys that I would keep an eye on running back wise. There's a former Terp, Roman Hemby, who is getting a lot of conversation for either night two or day three. He played at Indiana Tommy this year and won a national championship. Good God, is he explosive. He is a take it to the house threat every time he touches the ball, but he is truly a straight line guy. I mean, he gets to that top speed as quickly as anybody does, but there's got to be a hole there. And then he's going to run away from everybody. But in terms of overall players that I like in this draft, I've already mentioned that at the top of this draft, I do like Fernando Mendoza. I like him a lot. I really, really like David Bailey. I mean, he would be kind of number two for me. And then I really like Ruben Bain. So you know that I like those players. I am a big Carnell Tate fan. I think Tate's going to be an outstanding wide receiver. I think he's going to be an outstanding number one. I've heard a lot of people say the floor is super high with him, but the ceiling isn't. You know, he's going to be a solid number two. I think he could be a really good number one in this draft. I'm a big Akim Mezador fan, the other defensive end at Miami. He's 25 years old, which is why he's probably going to go in the middle towards the end of the first round. But if he were 21 years old, he'd be an easy top five pick in my opinion. Top 10 worst case. Really, really love Mezador. I do like Downs, but I like Downs because of what everybody says about him. Not that he can't play and the tape doesn't show it, but everybody says he's just an all time high IQ player. Athletically, does he test anywhere near like the Sean Taylors of the world? No. Is he going to be Ed Reed? I don't think so. But he's going to be a really good safety. And by the way, about Caleb Downs, I saw this, I think, last night or this morning. Do you know that he has 10 career punt returns? Four at Alabama, six at Ohio State, and he's got two touchdowns. Twenty percent of his punt returns have turned into touchdowns. I think it was Matt Patricia, the defensive coordinator at Ohio State, who said, People don't really talk about it, but Caleb Downs, if they use him this way, would be the best punt returner in the NFL. Now, do you take a player like that, who has a chance to be a starting safety for the next decade and have him return punts? I think you treat it more like Gibbs treated Daryl Green. In certain instances, you would do that. So I do like Downs. So Bain, Bailey, Mendoza, Tate, Downs, Mezzadour. I'm a big Denzel Boston guy at wide receiver. Now, he's probably mid to late first round. And I like Omar Cooper Jr. a lot as well. In terms of tomorrow night, I've talked about this guy so many times, but I don't know how Jacob Rodriguez doesn't end up being a first round pick. Almost everybody has him mocked in the second round of this draft. But Jacob Rodriguez, along with David Bailey, produced together one of the best defenses in college football last year, Texas Tech. Jacob Rodriguez had seven forced fumbles last year. He is the guy that's always in the right place at the right time. He is super physical. He just didn't test athletically at a super high level, which is why at his size and his athletic level, he's being talked about, best case, late first round, but mostly second round grades. But I have a feeling he's going to end up being one of the best players from this draft long term. Go watch number 10's highlight reel from Texas Tech. David Bailey played with him, the number 31 at Texas Tech, but Rodriguez was an absolute stud. I also really like the corner from Miami, Keontae Scott. He's the guy that had the pick six against Ohio State in the playoff game. He's five, 11, six feet. He is athletic and he's just one of these guys that anticipates so well. He's got big play potential. By the way, similar, not the same results that Emmanuel Forbes had. I mean, Emmanuel Forbes had more pick sixes during his career at Mississippi State than any player in college football history. But he was also tiny at like 165 pounds. Scott has some of that same anticipation ability. I really like him as a corner. There are some corners and receivers in particular, and centers, as Cole Kubaluk told us yesterday, that are going to be there on night two and day three. And then one other player that I want to mention, because there are some good safeties in this draft. Caleb Downs will go number one. Dylan Thienemann will go number two, and maybe high in the draft of safety from Oregon. But I really like Bud Clark from TCU. He is a night two or day three pick. But this guy is going to be a big time safety. He has been a multi-year starter. He has all of the games and the experience. He's got really good range. He's only 6'1, 188. That's why he's not, you know, a first round grade. But this guy is going to be really, really good as a safety at the NFL level. So those are some of the other players. You know, day two, day three. I think I've given you everything I have in my notes. I mean, yeah. I've mentioned Sonny Styles. I do like Styles. I think the athleticism part that he tested, you know, is the best test ever for an off-ball linebacker in terms of his RAS score. I think it doesn't show up on tape or when you're watching him as much as it maybe did at Indy, but he's still an excellent player and will be, you know, a starter as either a true mic linebacker or just an inside backer in a 3-4 base for a long time. And he would be, you know, if he gets picked by Washington, plug him in, you know, and plug him in as basically the Bobby Wagner, you know, replacement, you know, day one because he's ready to play that. Remember about Sonny Stiles? He was a safety first before he became a linebacker, which means he's got super, you know, versatile sort of coverage skills as well. I actually like Stiles more than Reese, but Reese is going to get taken before. And they're two totally different players, really. I actually think Stiles will be a good pass rusher too, especially in a Durante Jones defense where he'll use everybody as a pass rusher. Yeah, all right. I mean, something like Reuben Bain at seven and then coming back, you know, somehow be great for them to trade back and somehow get Bain and then get somebody like Rodriguez. I really want defensive players. That's my preference. They still need a lot on defense. And I still think, you know, Brandon Iuke is a strong possibility for opening day as that other playmaker that they will add.

Speaker 2:
[44:37] Too unpredictable.

Speaker 1:
[44:39] He is that. All right. Tommy's got some really interesting baseball news. That's next after these words from a few of our sponsors. So I wear glasses. I think some of you know that I wear prescription eyeglasses. I also wear prescription sunglasses. And recently it was time to swap out the old and bring on the new. And this has never in the past been an easy process for me. It's always been complicated to try to find the right style for the time, to try to find the right fit for my face. But Warby Parker has changed all of that. Once you buy from Warby Parker, you realize how much easier they've made the entire process, which includes their virtual try on, which is a total game changer. You can literally try on glasses from your phone before you buy. It's crazy how well it actually works. When it comes to quality for the price, Warby Parker is the best and honestly, it's not even close. You used to have to choose between flimsy outdated styles or spending half your paycheck on your new glasses. Warby Parker completely changed that. Their prescription glasses start at $95, $95, so you can actually get quality and stylish frames at an affordable price. Warby Parker doesn't just offer incredible prescription glasses, they have everything you need for happier eyes. That includes contacts, online eye exams and sunglasses. It's all in one place, which makes everything so much easier. Maybe the best part of Warby Parker, for every pair they sell, they also give a pair to someone in need. Warby Parker has distributed over 20 million pairs of glasses to people in need through its Buy a Pair, Give a Pair program. Right now, buy one prescription pair and get 20% off any additional prescription pairs at warbyparker.com/sheehan. That's 20% off additional prescription pairs when you go to warbyparker.com/sheehan. This time of the year always makes me rethink what's in my closet. I'm trying to keep fewer things, but better ones. Pieces that are well made and easy to wear all the time. That's why I keep coming back to Quince. The fabrics feel elevated, the fits are thoughtful, and the pricing actually makes sense. Speaker 2:
[49:21] Well, let me just make the official announcement. I've talked about it a little bit. But let me make it official. It's out there. The tickets are available for purchase for the DC Grey Cigars and Curveballs Fundraiser. This will be the 14th season, and our host has always been Shelly's back room. It will continue to be the host of this magnificent event, because their owner, Bob Matarazzi, is such a generous guy and loves what the Greys do. You know, the DC Greys are the non-profit, all-volunteer organization that creates baseball opportunities for kids in underprivileged areas of the city, and we pay for everything, equipment, gloves, everything. It's Monday night, May 18th, at starting at 6 p.m. at Shelly's back room at 1331 F Street NW in the district. You can buy the tickets by going on the DC Greys website. There's a link there to buy the tickets, dcgreys.com. And it really means so much to me to have it at Shelly's because Shelly's means so much to me. You know, when I went there the other night with my family, and this is like, and Bob was there, the owner, and I introduced them to my wife, and she said, this is his second home, so take good care of him. You know, and that's the way I feel. It is really my second home there. It feels friendly. It feels homey. They take you in at Shelly's Backroom and make you one of them. You can find out more at shellysbackroom.com.

Speaker 1:
[51:00] All right. Tell us, I'm excited about it. May 18th, it's a little bit later than it's usually been, right?

Speaker 2:
[51:08] It's usually in May.

Speaker 1:
[51:10] Yeah, it's usually May. I kind of think it's usually right when the Caps Playoffs begin. It's always that first series. Of course, they didn't have one this year. They're not in the playoffs this year.

Speaker 2:
[51:22] You know, if I could tell you just one story that I always remember, I was in the hospital with a leg infection.

Speaker 1:
[51:34] Yep, I remember that.

Speaker 2:
[51:36] And I had this event coming up, you know, the Cigars and Curveballs event on a Monday night. And the next day, I was supposed to fly to Vegas to do radio out there for the Mayweather Pacquiao fight for the next five days. And I'm in the hospital. Okay. So I talked to doctors into discharging me on Monday morning. You know, they gave me some antibiotics to take. But I really was in no shape to leave the hospital. I shouldn't have done that. Okay. I went down there that night, hosted Cigars and Curveballs, you know, with this cold, clammy, sweaty feeling that you have when you've got an infection. Got out of the plane the next day to go to Vegas. I was so sick, you know. But I stood, I stayed out there and did the shows from out there with you, from Vegas, you know, every day. And then I flew back on Sunday. And as soon as I got home, they put me back in the hospital.

Speaker 1:
[52:50] Oh my God. I don't remember that part of it. I do remember that, I vaguely remember the trip to Vegas, but I do remember you being in the hospital, like the day before the event. Yeah.

Speaker 2:
[53:06] All right.

Speaker 1:
[53:07] Well, how are you feeling today? How are you feeling today?

Speaker 2:
[53:10] I'm feeling okay.

Speaker 1:
[53:11] Okay.

Speaker 2:
[53:11] I'm feeling okay.

Speaker 1:
[53:12] Well, that's good. All right. Let's talk about your column. I'll let you tell everybody what you wrote about today, about the Nats.

Speaker 2:
[53:18] Okay. The San Diego Padres was announced recently. They're going to be sold for an unbelievable record amount of $3.5 billion.

Speaker 1:
[53:30] 3.9.

Speaker 2:
[53:31] That 3.9 billion.

Speaker 1:
[53:33] Yeah.

Speaker 2:
[53:33] That dwarfs the previous 2.4 billion that Steve Cohen used to buy the Mets in 2020. The baseball franchises don't bring the same value as a lot of other franchises, or they haven't in the past recently. So, but this is going to change a lot of things. But I'm sure the learners looked at this and said, oh baby, where's our money? Because everyone thinks that on the other, the labor agreement with the owners and the players is up this year. Everyone thinks it's going to be like a work stoppage and a dramatic change in the labor agreement by the time it's negotiated. On the other side of that, it's expected that the learners will put the nationals up for sale. And what this does is the learners, given the way they do business, they'll look at the Padres and say, well, the Padres can get almost $4 billion. We can get almost $4 billion. And in some ways, it makes sense. You know, the Padres are 30th television market. Washington is eighth. You know, they're a small market team. Washington, even though they don't operate that way, is a big market franchise. But there's a lot of things that are different. One thing, the Padres deal includes a partial ownership of the stadium they're at. The team owns 25% of Petco Park. And they also get a piece of a big real estate project next to the stadium, real estate development project for housing next to the stadium in this beautiful stadium district they've got there in San Diego. So there's a lot of components that go into, they're getting more than just a baseball team for $3.9 billion.

Speaker 1:
[55:40] Yeah, let me just make one thing, just update the sale for anybody that cares about this. They actually didn't sell the entire team, this Jose Feliciano with Clear Lake Capital. By the way, he was one of those guys that was going to be a part of a bid for our football team three years ago. But he and Kwanzaa Jones are actually purchasing between 30 and 40 percent of the Padres with $3.9 billion valuation. It doesn't change anything you're talking about. But what's interesting about it and reading through the details of this transaction is that the Padres are owned by like 10 different groups. So the stake that they're taking, even though it won't be a majority equity stake, will be a controlling stake. It'll be the largest equity piece and they will actually control and run the franchise. But the $3.9 billion, as you said, I mean, Cohen paid $2.4 billion for the Mets. The Learners have wanted what, Tommy? Something north of $2 billion and they haven't been offered it, correct?

Speaker 2:
[56:52] Yes, they reportedly were offered $2 billion back when the team was on the market about three years ago by Ted Leones. And that wasn't enough for them. Because, I'll tell you what they do, they look at what the Mets got and they think they should get that. This is what's preventing the naming rights deal. Three years ago, the Learners had an offer from a company for a naming rights deal that was negotiated to $18 million a year, which is a pretty good deal. I mean, that's pretty high. That's among the higher ones in baseball. And then the company walked away from the negotiating table when the Learners changed the terms of it and said they wanted $20 million a year. Well, $20 million a year is the highest in baseball, and that's what the Mets get.

Speaker 1:
[57:46] And so meantime, they're getting nothing.

Speaker 2:
[57:49] Right. Meantime, they've lost about $70 billion in revenue. $70 million in revenue that they could have gotten.

Speaker 1:
[57:55] Well, isn't the story about them that they were very interested in buying the Redskins back in 99, and they had penciled out to a number that they just would not go above, and that's kind of the way they do business. This is what we're willing to take, or this is what we're willing to pay, not a penny more. And I think the number was something like $650 million. Snyder paid $800 million. They wouldn't come up to $801 million or whatever. They walked. I mean, the team was just sold for $6 billion. It would have been a pretty good bump up in their offer had they made it. Who would have been the better owner? Snyder or the learners of the football team? Probably the learners.

Speaker 2:
[58:41] The learners. I'm as bad as they are.

Speaker 1:
[58:43] Yeah.

Speaker 2:
[58:44] They're not inhuman.

Speaker 1:
[58:45] No, exactly.

Speaker 2:
[58:46] Okay.

Speaker 1:
[58:47] All right. So will this create a logjam of people saying, hey, we're now up to your $2.4 billion, and we're willing to give you what you wanted a year ago. And they're going to say, nope, we're the eighth ranked market. And even though the Padres have certain things that you pointed out in your column, by the way, there's a benefit to being the only game in town and they're the only game in town in San Diego, no football, no hockey, no NBA. Plus they do a lot more in revenue than the Nats do. They draw a lot more to their games than the Nats do.

Speaker 2:
[59:26] But they've invested in their product.

Speaker 1:
[59:28] Right.

Speaker 2:
[59:29] They've spent money on players.

Speaker 1:
[59:30] And good. Yeah.

Speaker 2:
[59:32] Yes.

Speaker 1:
[59:33] So do you think that now it won't get sold because now they're going to be stuck on an unreasonable number that no one's going to think the team's worth?

Speaker 2:
[59:45] I think that's going to slow it down. Look, any sale with the Learners, I always said, try buying a box of paperclips from the Learners, see how that goes. Try buying a baseball team. It's going to be really complicated. This will slow it down even further. This will create an illusion as to what they think their team should get. It will slow things down further. It also has, the city sale also has implications beyond just the Padres and the Nationals. I mean, this whole labor dispute between the owners and the players, where the owners won a salary cap. You know, they claim they're losing money, they got a salary cap, and they're going to sit across the negotiating table and the players are going to say, a team that was bought for $800 million in 2012 and just sold for $4 billion. And you're telling me you're pleading poverty? You know, it's like a lot of things in sports franchises. The money is in the sale. It's not in the revenue.

Speaker 1:
[60:54] And I think, you know, it's funny that you say that because that's so true. When you see the worth of these franchises, it's only worth that if they decide to sell it. Now, they can sell off pieces of it like the Padres' owners are doing at a ridiculous valuation and benefit from that. And, you know, and there are other ways to sort of, you know, benefit from that, you know, owning that asset. But the bottom line is those outrageous numbers are, you know, if you sell it, the valuation, that doesn't really mean anything to what their P&L is, to whether or not they're making money or not. How they are, and all of these teams make money in sports, the NFL teams in particular. But yeah, you know, I used to feel the same way about people who would say, oh, well, you have to pay college players. Look at the television contract that college football just signed with the Big Ten, or what, you know, the network signed with the Big Ten. And I'm like, do you realize that that's revenue? That there now are costs, and part of the costs are funding every other program athletically at the school. Like, that's always been the biggest disconnect for me is even smart people talking about college sports in that way don't understand that literally 95% of athletic departments in college sports don't make money, you know, or barely make money. Now, if you want to eliminate all the other sports and not fund them with football and basketball, you can do that, but yeah, all right, well, so we're going to sit here and watch them try to sell a team for $4 billion that they're not going to be able to sell for the next five years.

Speaker 2:
[62:46] Yeah, it's going to make what will be a difficult process even tougher.

Speaker 1:
[62:50] Right.

Speaker 2:
[62:51] All right.

Speaker 1:
[62:53] I just remembered two points.

Speaker 2:
[62:55] Oh, by the way, you know who one of the investors is in that group is Drew Brees.

Speaker 1:
[62:59] Oh, really? In the Feliciano deal?

Speaker 2:
[63:03] Yes. Yes.

Speaker 1:
[63:04] Wow. Drew Brees made a lot of money, didn't he?

Speaker 2:
[63:08] Yeah.

Speaker 1:
[63:08] In the NFL. All right. There are two players that I forgot to mention about the draft that I want to mention. I had them in my notes and I haven't mentioned them yet. And I'll do that to finish up the show next after these words from a few of our sponsors. It's not easy to lose someone you love. So there were two players that I forgot to mention from some of my notes on players that I liked from the draft. I'll get to those in a moment. But I wanted to mention, Tommy, that it would not surprise me if Washington, especially if they acquire another pick or two in a trade back situation. And I do think trade back is a possibility tonight for Washington. But don't be surprised if they take a kicker in this draft on day three. Jake Moody is the only kicker on the roster. And he kicked okay at the end of the year last year. He did miss a short one in the season finale against Philadelphia. But the kickers become even more important in today's NFL with these kickoff rules. Last year, we saw with the average starting field position after a kickoff, some teams were one first down away from field goal range. Dallas was with Brandon Aubry in many situations. So there are apparently three or four very interesting, big legged, accurate kickers in this draft. So don't be shocked if Washington ends up going in that direction. Again, day three, sixth, seventh round, but would it shock me if they took a kicker in the fourth round, if they ended up acquiring a fourth round pick and a trade back? I don't think I'd be shocked. The two players that I had in my notes that I didn't mention, and one of them I've talked a lot about as we've headed towards the draft, but I am a big fan of Zachariah Branch from Georgia. He looks and plays a lot like Tariq Hill. I mean, very similar. I know most of his catches were line of scrimmage catches, but my God, is he electric with the ball in his hands. He is a problem after the catch. And they don't have currently a true slot. Although if they add Ayuk and they add another receiver, Tariq could end up being this slot because we've certainly seen him used in that situation. But I love Zachariah Branch from Georgia. And I really do like KC Concepcion from Texas A&M. He is a lethal returner for starters. And I know they've got a good returner in Jalen Lane, but he's another one with the ball in his hands from anywhere on the field, he can score. You know, and I remember Dan Quinn telling me a couple of months ago in terms of what they would be looking for. You know, he talked about game changing defensive players, and then he talked about offensive players that can score from anywhere on the field. And Zachariah Branch and KC Concepcion are two players that can take it to the house in a burst, a sudden burst. I like both of those players as well. Tommy, I know you won't do this, but tonight, in addition to having the draft on, in my house, I'll also have a screen for the NBA Playoffs, because we get Nix Hawks game three, and then a pivotal game three in the Nuggets Timberwolves series. You know, Jokic had one of his worst playoff games the other night. I mean, he could not make a shot. Go Bear really, you know, checked him and held him down. He ended up scoring 24 points, but it was on eight of 20. He was one of seven from behind the arc. This is one of those games where when you have a player like Jokic, and by the way, did you see? I know you didn't. But for those of you listening, Minnesota just, they were jawing after game two. They just said, well, Denver doesn't have anybody who can guard anybody on their team. And Denver is not an exceptional defensive team. They're not. But they were really yapping after their game to win. I'm expecting something big tonight from Nicola Jokic. Something like 40, 20, and 10. Something like that. They're favored on the road tonight in Game 3 at Minnesota. You won't watch though, will you?

Speaker 2:
[70:39] No, I won't be watching. But I am going to watch the next Lakers playoff game because from what I've read, the LeBron James show is pretty interesting to watch.

Speaker 1:
[70:51] Yeah, I mean...

Speaker 2:
[70:52] I mean, at his age.

Speaker 1:
[70:53] Yeah, at 41 years old, I mean, he's doing things that... I mean, they compare him to Kareem at 40, but when Kareem was 40 and playing in that final season and playing in the finals against the Pistons, he had Magic Johnson as his point guard. He had James Worthy at power forward. He had Byron Scott at the 2. We had Michael Cooper coming off the bench. The Lakers right now have nothing around LeBron with Luka Dantjic and Austin Reeves out. I got to tell you though, if I didn't say this the other day, the Rockets with Yadoka are so poorly coached in this series. JJ Reddick is coaching circles around the Rockets. I've never seen a team play so dumb as the way they played the other night. Kevin Durant himself had nine turnovers by himself. They were doubling him and they had no easy answer for Durant to handle the double team. I just don't get it. I mean, I know, seriously, I know middle school coaches who could have figured out, you know, there's an easy way. The guy that's actually coming over for the double team, that guy's man is open. So when your guy goes to double team, how about making yourself available in the middle of the floor, so we can throw it to you and beat the double team. And they're just totally reliant on ISO basketball. They're horrible to watch. There are a few teams like that. I can't stand watching teams like that. But yeah, the Lakers are smart. LeBron, his IQ, JJ Reddick with the way he coaches, he's a good coach. And they've got guys like, you know, Rui, who plays well for them. Marcus Smart, who has always been tough. Luke Kennard can just flat out shoot it. Yeah, I mean, I would, at this point, I wouldn't be surprised if the Lakers and they're up to nothing. LeBron's never lost a series after going up to nothing ever in his career. That game is not tonight, though. You gotta wait till tomorrow night to watch that game.

Speaker 2:
[73:06] I know.

Speaker 1:
[73:06] All right. You got anything else?

Speaker 2:
[73:10] I got nothing else for you today, boss. All right.

Speaker 1:
[73:12] I'll be back tomorrow. Steve Souter is going to jump on tomorrow's show and do a film breakdown of the player that Washington drafts tonight. That'll be tomorrow. Enjoy it tonight. Bye, Tommy.

Speaker 2:
[73:27] See you, boss.
