Rob Cesternino on the road for an exit interview here in Toronto, Ontario, Canada where last night we got together with a thousand Canadian Survivor fans, mostly Canadian Survivor fans, and we cried into our LeBats blue as we saw our friend, Dr. Christian Huvicki, voted out and we had a great panel, which you'll see later on in the day here on Thursday. But the task at hand is going to be an exit interview with Christian who's going to be here in a moment. I will also, when I get back home, talk with Kelly Wentworth coming up on Friday. So should be a fun one tomorrow. And then after I talk to Christian, we'll have Jordan Kalish with This Week in Survivor History, which I recorded before my trip. But let's bring in my interview with Christian. All right. We are here with our great friend, of course, the two-time survivor playing doctor of robotics and a huge super fan of Jimmy Kimmel. It's Dr. Christian Hubecky. Christian, how are you?

Speaker 3:
[02:54] Doing great, Rob. I'm reflecting on this whole journey. And what a joy. I mean, obviously, we all want to go a little further. But just such a ride, man. You never know how these seasons of Survivor are going to go. You know, and it's hard to ask for more than I got to do this time.

Speaker 1:
[03:13] Yes. Well, you absolutely made the most of your time. And I have so much to get to here with you today. First, have you gotten that apology yet from Jimmy Fallon that you requested?

Speaker 3:
[03:25] Well, the day is still young, Rob. I know I'm here in New York. Hopefully we have time to link up. I'll bring a mediator if I have to to make sure that we can nurture this friendship going forward with Jimmy.

Speaker 1:
[03:36] You know, I'm struggling to process exactly, maybe the same for yourself, of how this all ended up ending up with you getting voted out. How much do you blame the having the one vote against you being the reason why you got voted out?

Speaker 3:
[03:53] I think it was a factor. It was kind of like a deciding factor. Like, you know, if we, if you, if that, I mean, it's hard for me to say completely because I wasn't in on those conversations, but my understanding and also what I see in the episode, it really feels like there was a real shot that Emily would go home, which by the way, Emily came out swinging for me. She came out swinging to save me. She could have tossed me under the bus. She's like, no, we can maybe build a vote on Ozzy. So I'm, I feel grateful and vindicated for putting at least trust in her as to her intentions towards me. So I feel great about that. But like in terms of the twist itself, I think like, it's like kind of like Rizzo said, I think Rizzo kind of put the, it's like, look, I was against the wall. I mean, why would you let me get out of this situation where, or I can't play a shot in the dark. Why wouldn't you take the shot now? And I think that that is a good determining factor between these two. And it's such a bad thing to happen that like, even if I hadn't been under the gun because of telling three things, people might have said anyway, it's like, you know what? Maybe that was a good time for Christian. Now there's literally a target on him.

Speaker 1:
[04:56] On the flip side, if you complete the puzzle and you put a vote in the urn, presumably for Ozzy, does that change anything about you going home?

Speaker 3:
[05:04] Well, perhaps. I think, yes. I think that, well, I certainly, in terms of takes away that one element of a deciding factor. Now, the people could assume I have an advantage, right? And that could also backfire in another way. I mostly went because I wanted to make sure other people didn't have the advantage. That's what I was thinking at the time. I would have thrown it in the fire. Like, if I had the advantage, here's my advantage. Throw it in the fire, that's another way to go, right? But like, that's not how this would have worked. But like, I think it would have changed the calculus because it would have already been a vote on, I'm guessing, Ozzy at that point. I wasn't comfortable that I could say that for everyone, but it might have started to move some votes. We'll see.

Speaker 1:
[05:43] I'd love to ask you a little bit about the meta of the game after your experience because you and Rick Evans, a match made in heaven, two mad scientists bouncing stuff off of each other. It was a great spectacle in the episode that we saw last week, but it seemed to have an undesired effect of really upsetting the other players in the game. Can you just speak to, in hindsight, the undesired side effects that came out of the fake idol play at Tribal Council?

Speaker 3:
[06:15] Yeah. I mean, I think they're pretty clear. I mean, they put a target on Rick, and then by extension to put a target on his allies. And people perceived to be his allies, me and Emily, which we absolutely were. I mean, I think, and first off, just want to say, I think it's one of the coolest possible ways that a fake idol has ever been deployed. I mean, and also, what's genuinely interesting, to be clear. So what a wonderful idea. I was happy to be even to have a supporting role in that heist or reverse heist or whatever you call it. But like, going into the pairs Tribal Council, the previous Tribal Council, I thought we had the votes. I thought we had the votes to get out coaching Chrissy. It made sense for a lot of people to get out of coaching Chrissy. It was too big of this massive alliance of old school minded players. So when Rick pulled it out, I'm just like, okay, I don't think he needed it. I hope Rick knows what he's doing now.

Speaker 1:
[07:06] Did you know before that Tribal Council that he was going to play it there?

Speaker 3:
[07:09] I did not. We knew it was a possibility.

Speaker 1:
[07:11] Okay, all right, good. That's interesting.

Speaker 3:
[07:12] I did not know. I thought my goal was just to keep Jonathan on the rails. Because I had to lie a lot to Jonathan to pretend I was voting out Rick.

Speaker 1:
[07:25] Yeah.

Speaker 3:
[07:26] Make sure that he doesn't blow up the plan at Tribal Council. By the way, Jonathan had already been tipped off prior to Rick pulling out the idol, that something was afoot. And Jonathan was already getting up and whispering to people at Tribal prior to Rick pulling out the fake idol. So I could understand why Rick would be spooked. It's his life on the line, right? And I wasn't so fully confident that I absolutely knew where every vote was going to tell him definitively, no, don't play it. If I, again, in my position, as a person who's probably not being targeted, I wouldn't have played it and stated it later, but I can't blame Rick at all.

Speaker 1:
[08:04] Yeah. I'd love to know from you, what assurances do you get from other players that Ozzy was getting voted out? You said it was a blind side. I presume you must have thought a few other people were voting with you at that tribal council.

Speaker 3:
[08:16] Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I was told that the Ozzy plan was going through. It was called Emily's plan. Like, oh, did you know that Emily has this plan to get out Ozzy? I was like, oh, okay. And in talking to other people, they would tell the Ozzy plan. There were a couple of signs that I'm kicking myself for not seeing. Lessons that I learned, I literally like, this is a lesson that you should learn. When someone responds like this, it's a tell. And part of it was like, I ignored it because the situation was so weird because my vote doesn't matter because I had to vote for myself. And I wrote it off as an anomaly. But there's a lot of some of my conversations really, it's like, oh, this is going sideways. But I did think it was going to be an Ozzy vote going in. But it was a proper blind side. Yeah.

Speaker 1:
[08:56] So a lot of fans have wondered, how come that the players that are out there don't see that Ozzy and Saree are together, that they seem so close on television? Were they doing a good job of hiding it from you all?

Speaker 3:
[09:13] I think they were doing a good job of hiding it. Now, to be clear, I mean, I should, this is one of the things I felt like should have known. So I feel like my biggest error by far this season was telling Suri about a plan to get Ozzy out. And that was, as portrayed on television, as soon as I got out, I was like, oh, it was Suri and Ozzy. Why didn't I forget that? Why I forgot that? And that's probably what happened. And I'm kind of glad it got bored out on television that that's what went down. And early on, we were openly talking about getting, Ozzy was almost gone in the first vote on CELA. And Emily was pushing Ozzy. And to the point where at the last minute, she's like, I had the votes for Ozzy. I'm like, you do? Don't you need me for this? So I flipped in a different direction. But over time, I think it just did better. Over time, they did a good enough job of not talking about it in person. And once I started to sniff out, oh, there's some kind of middle going on and Ozzy's in it, I should have just taken the extra step. But, oh, obviously, Saree's part of it too. And I didn't take that extra step. And I'm taking myself for that.

Speaker 1:
[10:16] You and Rick made a lot of overtures to Aubrey to help her in the game. The idol was sent to Aubrey. Then at the Tribal Council on the Blood Moon, you voted with Aubrey. Was it surprising that Aubrey then really wanted to switch gears and go with Jonathan and the other side against you?

Speaker 3:
[10:39] I mean, I didn't take personal offense by it or anything. I figured that it's a situation that once a vote is mobilizing, you might have to get on board, right? And certainly she was trying to separate herself from Rick Devin. She told me as much. We were talking about these things. And there should have been signs, honestly, that clock that Aubrey was flipping. Here's a trick to Survivor fans, to know if you're in the fake plan, if you're the real plan. If you talk to someone about a plan, ask them literally any follow-up question like, oh, who does Ozzie think I'm voting for? If it's the real plan, they probably thought that out. If it's a fake plan, they probably haven't. I asked Aubrey a question almost exactly like that, and I just got a nonsense answer, and I was like, that's weird. At that point, I should have known she was flipping, and so I blame myself for that. I should have picked up on that.

Speaker 1:
[11:35] Yeah. Well, I'm getting the signal that we need to wrap things up now. I know that you had asked about a longer conversation in the future. Do you know was that binding?

Speaker 3:
[11:49] Not sure he agreed to that, but I think we can ask.

Speaker 1:
[11:51] He's under duress.

Speaker 3:
[11:53] I think I'll be on my pay grade there, Rob. But I just got to say, I just had a beautiful and wonderful time in the challenge and through the whole season in general. I'm so joyous and grateful that I got to have it.

Speaker 1:
[12:03] I thought that you gave us so much during your time on Survivor, and I just want you to send a message to Michael for me that I just want to know that I thought that your message about what happens in the face of adversity and what comes after, I thought was especially inspiring to me and really resonated. So please tell Michael that I am extremely proud of his dad. Okay?

And I think he really solidified himself as just one of the all time Survivor characters that you'll always think of associated with the show and you'll smile whenever you think of him on the screen. And that's really just about all that you could ever hope for as a player on Survivor. And so I'm really proud of the guy. Can't wait to have a longer conversation. Whether it's an hour or more, maybe we can do multiple one hour conversations at some point. And maybe it'll be like Ask Dr. Hubecky. And then that it'll just be all my questions. He did win immunity there. And Jonathan was able to outlast him in that challenge. So Rob, you steal one point, you have a four to one lead and you have mathematically won the quiz.

[27:53] Chrissy, I want to tell you that you're disdained for the Verbal Rebus and your lack of enthusiasm, I thought was so touching and inspiring and I loved it so much. Thank you. You've made me so happy. Because I feel gaslit on this week in Survivor history, where I say, the Verbal Rebus, it's not good. And people say, Rob, you're crazy. You're crazy. It's awesome.
