Don't wait for something to feel off before taking action. Make your next checkup count. Ask your doctor about your risk factors for dementia and a cognitive assessment. Wanted to talk about something that has become epidemic. Where was that? Just a second. Shacking up. Hmm. Cohabitation, AKA shacking up. With no marriage, in the United States has increased more than 1,500% in the past 50 years. In 1960, about 450,000 unmarried couples lived together. Now the number is more than 7.5 million. And in this particular article, here are a few of the reasons couples cite for shacking up. One, one of them is hoping that it's a step toward a proposal. Which one do you think that is? The man or the woman? Think about that for a moment. You keep thinking. Number two, want to see if they're compatible as roommates. And three, to save money on rent. Yeah. So, further states, 80% of shacking up relationships end before marriage or in a divorce after marriage. So I guess test driving doesn't really work. So it's 80-20 against you getting married or staying married. One reason is because there's no commitment. A relationship without a commitment has no muscle. Two, your children will be negatively affected to the parents who have children. Your kids are now three times as likely to be expelled from school or get pregnant. They are five times more likely to live in poverty, 22 times more likely to go to jail. Why? You know, insecurity hurts just about every living creature that's small. The number one thing new babies need is to feel safe. Number one thing new puppies and kittens need is to feel safe. You don't feel safe in a shack up situation. You just don't. Number three, it makes you lazy. You... When you make a commitment, there's... it's almost like it is a concrete thing that's attached to you and you're aware of it. And it does perhaps in some of your weaker, stupid moments, weaker or stupid moments, have you focused better on how you want to be thinking and behaving. As people age, it's normal to ask what more they could be doing to take care of their health. It's important to be proactive, especially when it comes to your brain health. Don't wait for something to feel off before taking action. Make your next checkup count. Ask your doctor about your risk factors for dementia and a cognitive assessment. Speaker 1:
[07:10] So another article, and this stuff I've told you a million times, shacking up is linked to higher divorce rates, increased risk of domestic abuse, lower relationship quality. It's often described as sliding into a commitment rather than deciding on it. Research shows higher risks of financial strain, infidelity, emotional distress, making it a frequently debated topic. Okay. Financial downside. Breaking up is more difficult after sharing expenses, furniture, rent, which can keep people in bad relationships longer. Safety issues. Women are statistically more likely to experience abuse from a shack up guy than a husband. Children in cohabiting shack up households have a worse outcome regarding school, emotional health, and future relationship. Stability. Without the legal and social commitment of marriage, relationships are more easily disrupted and less stable. You got to think about what that means. Because when you get married, there are all kinds of other people involved. In-laws. You have a network invested. Nobody is invested in your shack-up, and that makes for fragility of the relationship. I'm Dr. Laura Schlessinger. My number, 1-800-375-2872.
