Speaker 1:
[00:02] From PRX. Friends beyond the Binary. Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls. Bluths and Roy's, Roy's and Bluth's. Whether you're Wams Gantt, how do you say that? Wams Gantt? I don't know. Whether you, if you while while wonder what Wams Gantt, Wams something is, or you're wondering what it is I'm talking about, you're in the right place. This is Sleep With Me. It's a podcast that's a bit confusing, a bit different. It is a sleep podcast. It's been around quite a little while. I don't know, can you say, I guess quite a little while doesn't say. It's been around a while. And the reason it's been around, I do have trouble saying words. You say, you've been, it doesn't sound like you've been around a while. And I'd say, fair enough, it does, you're actually correct. It does not sound, despite recording, I don't even know what, 1,500 episodes or something. Yeah, I've not mastered the art of speaking. But I have honestly been curious and tried to learn how to make a podcast that brings you sleepy joy and delight in a meandering, nonsensical, somewhat boring way. Like you were hanging out with a goofy friend that's just there to keep you company, make you barely laugh and comfort you or distract you in the deep dark night. That's really what this show's about. And some listeners would say that these particular episodes are high concepts because they're listening for 20 PM or they're saying, man, this is one high concept. But most listeners, this is just a concept so high in the stratosphere that it's like those clouds that are wispy, almost formless. And what do I mean? Well, I think that metaphor was nearly formless. Because these particular episodes, you know, if you're new, I'll explain to you the structure of the show coming up here. But yeah, later on, we'll be kind of doing a dreamy TV recap style podcast. And it's a bit different. But it's also a podcast that you don't have to listen to, but you could listen to. So I'm glad you're here, whether you're new, whether you're a person that comes from time to time when you need this show or you're a regular listener. I'm always glad you're here. I really am working hard. I love making this show. I really do. So I think I had one more thing. Oh, structure. So coming up with support. That's really only for the people that listen night after night, whose lives are changed by the podcast. I mean, you could always support the show. It's great. But if you're new, you're not in a position to do so. You only listen once in a while. You know, we're here. We're here to support you too. Then after the support, it'll be a long meandering intro meant to ease you into bedtime. And then later on, we'll have a succession of restful developments, or I guess it's the series of episodes. But yeah, it'll be a succession, because I think there's usually three segments in this show. So I'm glad you're here. I work really hard at Your Next Drive. I really hope I can help you fall asleep. And if this podcast does make your life better, particularly makes your life better four, five, six nights a week, we really could use your help either through one of these sponsors or directly. And I'm running through why the whys I've been hearing from supporters, why people sign up to support a free podcast. And the last why I'm kind of going through in these messages is that people say, when I found your show, first I wasn't sure about it, but then as I started becoming a regular listener, I said, finally something that helps. I've been looking for something like this my whole life. I finally found something that works for me. And I don't want to go without it. If you stop making the show, I'd have very strong feelings about it. And then there's that extra connection that they suddenly make. And for a lot of people, it's after three, four, five, six years of hearing me asking for support. Wait a second, but the show does need my support. I would miss it if it was gone. I don't want to go without it. It does depend on listeners like me to exist. And then they just go to sleepwithmepodcast.com/plus. So maybe you're the person tonight. You're going to go to sleepwithmepodcast.com/plus. You're done putting it off. You're the one. You're like, I can support the show. I want to. I'm going to do it right now. And you know, your $7 a month will absolutely change the trajectory to make sure the podcast is still around next month, next year. You want to be a part of this because you count on it, because it's changed your life, and because you know what it was like before you listened to this show. If that's you, don't wait. Go to sleepwithmepodcast.com/plus right now and sign up. Oh, Mr. Bard, a lot of people help out on the show. Who are they? Thanks, Mr. Bard. If some of these messages rang true for you, but you're not in a position to financially support the show, let people know about the podcast. Give them your honest experience with the show, how you discovered it, how you like to listen, and how it helps. Spread the word and let me know about it so I can say thanks. Send me a message through our website or on social media. That's a huge, huge way to help the show. You could still be a part of this thing and helping us keep it going, just by letting somebody else know about the podcast. Thanks, and what do you say we get on with the show? Well, welcome. This is Sleep With Me, the podcast that puts you to sleep. We do it the bedtime story. All you need to do is get in bed, turn out the lights and press play. I'm going to do the rest. What I'm going to attempt to do is create a safe place where you could set aside whatever is keeping you awake, whether that's thoughts on your mind, thoughts about the past, the present, the future, thoughts you're thinking about, or thoughts that are just there, making an appearance. It could be feelings that are related to those thoughts, or feelings that have come up, feelings left over from the day, feelings about tomorrow, feelings you'd appreciate. You say, I appreciate this feeling, and I'd love to make time for you late, like, but not at bedtime. It could be physical sensations, changes in time, temperature, routine. You could be going through something, getting over something in the middle of something. Maybe you're traveling or have guests. Maybe you work a different schedule. You know, shout out to all those shifts. You know, all the people, and I do believe this, and I believe it strongly, that when Dolly Parton, and I've talked about this before, you know, if Dolly Parton had unlimited time, she would rewrite that song for whatever shift you work. But when Dolly Parton sings work in nine to five, she's singing it in her heart. She's saying, whatever shift you really work. Because, you know, when Dolly Parton was singing that song, I think she was already successful. And maybe, as a working artist, she was working nine to five. But I think what she was really saying was, and, or maybe it was like a pitch to it, maybe it was totally manufactured originally. But once it went through her heart, and I'm not being snarky at all. I mean it like, she said, I see you working the, whatever, like 11.30, plus you get a half hour break, to 11.30 to eight. What a way to make 11. Whether you get two 15 minute breaks, or you get a paid lunch, but you got to work for your break. You know, that's why you have to work to half hour. Just so you could hear it in her heart too. Just like, oh, and what am I talking about? I went far afield. Oh, what other? Yeah, so I guess the reason I bring up anything that might be keeping you awake is very similar. It comes from my heart or whatever deep within me. Or you could say just just out there in the ether or my experience in not sleeping is that it's not great, right? For me, not being able to sleep is not great. And knowing that you're dealing with sleep issues, whatever it is that brought you here specifically, just like Dolly, singing from the nine to five perspective, was singing to everyone who works any kind of thing and says, oof, even somebody working mom. I'm sure Dolly would have said, oh, no, yeah, I was definitely singing it for the working moms of the world, or the working parents of the world, or people working just to raise children, or whatever it is, you know? The students, I guess I could go on for the, that's why I do this job. But when I talk about sleep, I know what it's like for me. I know it's like for a lot of listeners I've heard from. And I think I could relate to what it's like for you. But here's the thing, this is where the real magic of, and I do believe in a sense that I could, I'm not assuming, I'm deducing that Dolly Parton probably feels the same way. Or if she knew, she already knows this. That somewhere out there, listening to the show right now, this part Dolly doesn't know about, but she knows about the bigger point I'm going to make is that someone is listening right now that really does get where you're at, that really does understand whatever it is that brought you to the show and what it really feels like for you. Maybe they've been through the same thing or something very similar, or they just see you, they just can connect with you. They are somewhere in the world right now listening and wishing you well and hoping you get the sleep you need and you deserve. And they're saying, I'm rooting for you. I hope this podcast can help you like it helped me, or it can introduce you to something else that will help you. Because they see you and they really understand and they feel for you. And I feel for you too. Maybe I can't connect as deeply as this other person, this other listener can. But the thing is we're all connected here in an indirect sense in the deep dark night. Just like anybody that works is connected to Dolly Parton in a sense. But in a real sense. I mean, right? How come that song is not called an anthem? I mean, maybe I should listen to it. Barely get what a way to make a living something all taken and no given. So, yeah, I mean, how come that song is not an anthem for working, you see? I guess I maybe I should get, I guess I do have a copy of a single of it. So, yeah, I should go and listen to the lyrics before I say, how come this isn't an anthem for our times? I mean, boring myself a cup of ambition. I guess maybe I should be like a, maybe I should noodle on that later. You're right brain. Is that my left brain or my right brain saying that? Your correct brain. So whatever does that brought you here, there's other people that are glad you're here. I'm glad you're here. And as I said, you deserve a bedtime that doesn't have to, like, you don't have to dread. That's not full rigmarole. Like if you're anything like me, when that sleep trouble hits, I start dreading, especially during the week or on the weekend. I'm like, well, what about Sunday night? How am I to get to sleep I need to face the week and to be available working and present in my life? And that's what I want. I'd love to be a small part of that for you so that your life is better tomorrow. Your life is more manageable. And eventually, and again, I do believe this is true, just like Dolly Parton would want you out in the world flourishing. And maybe that's more powerful, right? Because she's a bit bigger deal than me. And she's actually more, you know, she's got a, I have a little bit different energy than Dolly Parton. Her energy is a little bit more bright and joyous. And, but she wants you to be out there in the world flourishing. So do I. That means our world's a better place when you're in the world flourishing. And we could use that. So that's why I make the show. And it is a bit, the show's a bit different, right? I send my voice across the deep dark night. I use the lulling, soothing, kareeky dulcet tones, pointless meanders and superfluous tangents. So I'd go off topic. I'd get mixed up. Forget what I was talking about. I have filler words. Then I go on multiple tangents or pointless meanders. I don't think you could call Dolly Parton tangent pointless. But you could call it superfluous. I mean, that would be, you know, you could do that. I don't know if I would. I mean, you could say anything involving Dolly is superfluous. Maybe you could say it's superfluous, but that may not be correct. But, you know, you say, well, I still used super and fluous. Okay, so my voice is not traditionally soothing. This show is a bit disconnected, but it does have a nice flow to it for the people it works for. And if you're new or you're questioning this show, like, whatever it is that brought you here, and you say, what is going on here? That is a very common reaction. When most people get here, they're skeptical, they're doubtful, they're frustrated. They had an expectation of something a little bit more reasonable or straight from, you say, a bedtime podcast. This must be like, right? You fill in the blanks. You probably had some reasonable expectation. This show, it does defy expectations. I guess inadvertently, do I inadvertently defy expectations? Listeners, let me know. I wouldn't say, I'd say with intention, not intent, inadvertently with intention, not intentionally. But my vocabulary is not, I know a lot of words. I just don't know the meanings to all of them. I guess like I have, my vocabulary may be superfluous. So, oh, so when you get here, give the show two or three tries. That's what probably over a million people have said over the years. It took two or three tries for me to get used to the show because at first, I didn't like it or I was like, this is a sleep podcast? What is he going on about? When's the sleepy stuff going to start? I thought you were putting me to sleep. Then maybe the second time you say, oh, he's serious about all this. He's seriously goofy, but oh, he's like a harmless, he's seriously harmless. You're going to say, yeah, well, yeah, I've been told that before. So just give the show a few tries because on the second or third try, a lot of those people realize they fell asleep. Oh, wait a second. Then I woke up and I poured myself a cup of ambition and yawned or whatever and stretched and then headed out the door. And I'm trying to remember lyrics for the song, but so give it a few tries and see how it goes. You really have nothing to lose. I'm just here to help you out. And if you already know this is not a good fit, you know, the show's an acquired taste or you decide the podcast isn't for you at any point, we have a website set up, sleepwithmepodcast.com/no thank you. Or I think no thanks will bring you there. And that has other sleep podcasts and sleepy stuff. So you could find something that does work for you. Because I want to help you either way. If you're anything, if you're in the spot that I've been in before, whether you, even if you strongly dislike me, I still want to help you out because you still deserve a good night's sleep. So use that website because it is this podcast. Yeah, it's just an acquired taste. And one part of it is that this is a podcast you don't really listen to, right? It's like kind of background noise or a TV on in the other room, a show streaming under your pillow. It's like elevated background noise or hanging out with a friend that you're like, hey, can you talk to me for a while, but I'm not going to pay really close attention. And if your friend's like this, okay, no problem. Let me talk about, I mean, I could just keep talking and then I'll figure out what I'm going to talk about. So just see how it goes. Or wait, yeah, so it's like an out-of-focus picture. Or I think we've all had this experience before, whether it's in a seminar or work thing or a conference or in person, intentional or inadvertently, or it's just happened that someone's put us to sleep, but that we've been listening to. Or they haven't put us to sleep, but they've distracted us in a way that's comforting. Like a lot of times, they think about sports on the radio, particularly baseball, but other things. And you'd be like, what's the score of the game? I'm like, I don't even know. I just was listening to it. I don't think I ever said that. I'm just listening to it for comfort. But that's what I would have said if I meant it. I don't know. I just like how it feels when it's on there in the background. So that does take some getting used to. Also, this is a sleep podcast. It's not here to put you to sleep. There's no pressure to fall asleep with this show. There's a reason the episodes are over an hour. And it's because there's people listening who can't sleep at all, or who need a break during the day, or have some sort of work where they just need a distraction, kind of like I talked about with the baseball. And I'm here to keep them company and you company, whether you're awake or asleep. I'm here to just hang out with you so you could listen when you need to, and you could sleep in, and you know, you could figure out what works for you. But I'm here to the very end, whether you're listening or not, whether you're awake or asleep, because my job is to keep you company and take your mind off of stuff versus putting you to sleep. I'm here to be your bore friend, your bore bae, your bore sib, your nay bore, your bore bee, your boreman, your Boris Borloff, your chairman of the boards, your best bore friend forever, to just be here. Keep you company and take your mind off of stuff so you could fall asleep. That's a couple of things. The only other thing I like to run through quickly for new people or if you're just getting used to show is to structure the show. We structure the show in a way to try to benefit the maximum amount of people we can. The show starts off with a greeting. Friends beyond the binary, ladies, gentlemen, boys and girls, so you feel seen and welcomed in. And you say, okay, I might check that show out. It seems, it seems, I don't know, it sounds okay. Then there's support so that paying for the show is optional. So if you're new, you listen occasionally, you're not in a position to support the show, we've got you. The support is for people that prefer stuff without ads or for the people that benefit from the show on a regular basis. Then after the support is the show within a show which introduces what the podcast is, it's the intro, it goes on for about 15 to 20 minutes long. Me explaining what the podcast is, the structure of every intro is the same, but every intro is different where I go off on different superfluous tangents every time so that there's some level of variety to every episode. The episodes always have a similar flow, but they're always new. So whatever it is that's keeping you awake feels like respected and like, oh, OK, there's something new. I can't quite point out. I don't know. It's just what's worked for me. Repetition consistency works, but repetition doesn't. Reassurance works. But otherwise, I'm like, oh, the bird, that owl's going to hoot again at 41 minutes. I don't know. That's just the way my sleeplessness works. So that's why every intro is new. But the reason every intro is 15 to 20 minutes long is to ease you into bedtime, not to put you to sleep. Most people don't fall asleep during the intro. If you do, please consider supporting the show directly. And if you don't like the intros, we have story only versions of every episode on Sleep With Me Plus and a podcast that's listener ad supported that's available everywhere called Bedtime Stories from Sleep With Me. So just like, but the intro, yeah, the reason the intro goes on and on and on is because most people are listening while they're getting ready for bed. They're winding down. They're doing some sort of chill activity or they're in bed getting comfortable so that you have this buffer between being awake and or asleep. You get eased into bedtime. As a part of a wind down and that's what works for me personally. And you know, just what I've seen work like from research, like having a wind down routine and setting the tone to be eased into bedtime really works. So that's a real purpose of the intro. And it's where we all get to hang out. And in this intro, like probably, at least once or twice a year, we're able to have like a collective gratitude for Dolly Parton's greatness. And that's always nice. Or maybe it was like three weeks ago. I don't know. I lose track of these things because I'm just here right now in the moment with you, keeping you company. So that's the structure of the show. That's why I make the show. I'm really glad you're here. Whether you're new or you're coming back or you're just stopping in for a visit. And again, if you're new or an occasional listener or you can't support the show, don't worry at all. But if this podcast does improve your life on a regular basis, you fall asleep fast, you listen to multiple episodes a night, please, please consider the support in the show or one of the sponsors for you and for all these other people that listen so that we can keep making your bedtime better. And here you go. Here's some ways you can do that. Thanks. Hey, everybody. This is Scoots. And I'm trying to run through these messages of why people support the show now. We talked about who doesn't need to support the show, who could, but who is supporting the show. And why would someone support a free podcast? And there's three kind of main, they're all similar. So put yourself in this person's shoes. Maybe this is you. And maybe you're the person that will support the show tonight. Because the first thing they do is they say, oh, Scooter has been talking to me. I can support the show. I want to support the show. I've just been kind of putting it off. And now I'm hearing that the show really does need my support. I'm going to support the show right now. And then they go to sleepwithmepodcast.com/plus right now. They did it last night or the night before. And they sign up to support the show. Because yeah, I know the show needs my support. I've just been waiting for the perfect time. Well, now's the perfect time. I'm going to do it. If that's you, sign up right now. sleepwithmepodcast.com/plus. Don't wait. We could set up the bonus content tomorrow or a day or two. But if you're hearing me right now and you're like, yeah, I am the one. I can support the show and I want to. And I can't replace this podcast with something else. sleepwithmepodcast.com/plus. Everybody, welcome to our ongoing series. This is a kind of inspired by the Newhart and the Bob Newhart. The Newhart Show and Bob Newhart Show. Oh, it's called Newhart. My brain just told me. It's a series finale. Somehow, the power of dreams has leaked out, and this is a somewhat of a TV recap podcast, a somewhat of a dream wondering podcast. If it made any sense, you may be able to call it fanfic, but I don't think so. It's called A Succession of Restful Developments, and it just has two characters talking about two different shows that are about family, and I'm going to turn it over to them. Well, hello, Michael. Come on in and sit down. I just want to get right to things. If you're comfortable doing that, I've been looking over all the extensive notes we have, and I was just thinking, is it okay to review your week first and then kind of go, because quite a week, and really, I'm proud of you and your family for letting me in and letting me see so much that's going on. I was really touched this week, really. Yeah. I mean, I could tell by your tone that you're wondering about what I'm always told, that you're not totally comfortable with me being touched by your week. So you already probably know which parts impacted me. So why don't you run through your week, and then we'll have a couple of ideas of how we could proceed with what you have. And it seems to be that you're still having these recurring dreams about the Roy family, which is very much like a famous... Well, I don't know anything about the family, you know, but there's that one person. But yeah, I mean, it's just so interesting. You're so layered. Okay, I get where you're going with this. Okay, so first thing that, you know, started my week off not great was seeing a car that my sister was hiding that was a rental car that needed to be returned. And then I had, you know, I was trying to sell the corporate jet for money. She was not happy about me, you know, we're just having... We're not seeing each other and no car, no jet. And, you know, I'm trying to move things forward with my father's business and my sister was just, well, I don't know, I'm not comfortable with you, the way you're distributing good trees and bushes and things and this development. I was very, you could say, snarky with her and calling her materialistic. And it does feel like I realize, you know, I'm here to kind of grow. So this was not a growth moment. So whatever, but she's my sister, you know, we go back and forth. Then Job showed up and it sounded like he needed my help in a real way. But at first I thought he wanted some spare change or something. And he said what he needed was freedom. And I said, what do you mean? And it was like a dream because he's dating Marta, who's a TV, like a soap opera star, Spanish language soap opera star. And the name of the show she's on was very, that maybe made you think of like a theme for my week. Now, I had never met Marta before. So, and you know, someone that would date Job, I feel like I couldn't understand that. So I guess I had, was holding a lot of assumptions about her. But she was up for an award show. Award, kind of like an Emmy. And then I think he was making jokes about Tom Hanks. I said, wait a second, buddy, and Rita Wilson. And yeah, I know from the interviews, at least you let me see everything my family wrote. I mean, some really insightful things that touched me. But oh, they called them Desi's, the award. And she was nominated. And I was like, I can't believe you have a woman that believes in you. You know, I was judging Job. And a little bit, I guess, competitive with him because I said, well, at least you have someone that really appreciates you. And, you know, family is the most important thing. But then, of course, mom shows up. We tried to hide from her. Then Job wanted something. So then he tells me he did want to borrow money. So then he told mom where I was. She wanted tickets. She also wants to attend the awards. She's competing with another Lucille, who also is a Liza Minnelli impersonator. She's always interesting. She never, I guess, I don't think it's Liza Minnelli, but it could be. My mom's very competitive with her. Buster's there. He needs me to tie his tie. I'm trying to say, Buster, maybe you should spend less time with mom. I guess, yeah, I'm getting involved in everybody's relationships. Maybe you should be dating someone, Buster. Mom's like, when have you gone on a date with anybody? Then I was successful at selling the jet, but I also got a kind of a vehicle that Lindsey could use or anybody at the family could use from the, that was with the stairs to the jet, though nobody really wants to use it. Then there was someone named Johnny. Who's Johnny? Not number five Johnny, but Johnny, he was also protective of the bushes. He was like a lover of bushes. So he was, had an exception to our families relocating bushes. And then my sister's like, okay, well, I'll go talk to him. But I think she was more doing it to show me that she was not going to take my side. Then I saw Jobe's interview, it was supposed to be Marta's interview with Jobe as a member of the family. And she was even talking about families forever. And then Jobe stood up and said, I have an announcement. I'm going to go visit my father. We're going to go to one of those rooms, those get out of those rooms together, and I'm going to get out of that room. And Jobe was trying to hide a key, like use a hide a key to hide a hide a key in the room. So he didn't actually have to deduce any of the puzzles to get out of the room. So Jobe and my father went to this get out of the room thing. Though Jobe was also, yeah, I mean, I'm sure this is one of the things that has touched you, Jobe was hoping him and my father would work through the puzzles together. But my father brought his friends from the dormitory he's living in and he was teaching them, okay, the first thing you want to do is take a look, pause and look around the room. And then you want to talk about what you're seeing, look for anything. And Jobe's like, how come you always told me these are these were individual, you know, you never want to do this with me. Also Jobe hid the key and forgot, hid the hide a key and forgot where he hid the hide a key. Then Lindsay goes and meets with Johnny, the lover of Bush's and says, I'll help you. And then maybe and George Michael are going back and forth, maybe wants to rebel against her mom. George Michael wants to support maybe. And then Jobe's also not polite to my father's friends. He's doing magic for them. But that he's also making humorous commentary about them while they're trying to solve the puzzles of the puzzle room. Then Marta shows up in my house. And Jobe had told her I was going to take her to the awards and I was struck by how attracted I was to Marta. So then we took the... I forgot that Lindsay had used the stair car to go to one of the higher bushes to meet with Johnny, the bush lover of bushes. So she's trying to talk him out of that because we need to relocate the bushes in order to make more money, which she wants. OK, so then there was the awards thing, right? So I'm at the awards ceremony with Marta. And then my mother and my brother are at Buster's with my mother at the awards ceremony. So is Lucille Ostero, who is the Liza Minnelli impersonator. Buster also stopped wearing his glasses because my mom was saying he wasn't going to get any dates. So he has like a mix-up where the Liza Minnelli impersonator, Lucille, thinks Buster wants to date her. She says, okay, he's a very attractive young man. So that's happening. And it gets like that plays out through the rest of the week where then he's saying that he's attracted to her and he's going to date her and that's going to give her independence from mom. Mom's like, he doesn't even know who she is. And he says, oh, well, I'm just excited to see this play out. Kind of remind, yeah. So meanwhile, I realize how much family is important to Marta. Marta does not win the award and she needs comforting. I realize that I said, man, I'm feeling I have the feels for Marta. And this might solve everything. This is going to be my new HP now. Holy cow. Marta take me away. You love family. I love family. Now, Job's back at the get out of the room, but it's one where you stay overnight. And he decides he doesn't want to sleep there, so he keeps telling my father, like, no, I'd rather go home. I want to sleep in my own bed. And my father says it'll cancel the whole puzzle. He goes, well, sneak out. I hid a key anyway. I just can't find it. Now, Lindsay is trying to talk this guy out of the tree. And then she realizes, man, this used to be exciting and I would do rebellious stuff like this. So she's like, I might stay in this tree for a little while. There's a bush. I mean, it's a tall bush, not actually a tree. My mom says the buster thinks he's Steve McQueen because of everything. And oh, yeah, he talks about how liberating falling for someone is. And I'm like, huh, huh. You're just going to jump right in and be liberated. So it reminds me. Then Job says, hey, can you come pick me up? I can't find the hide a key I hid. So I go over and meet him, but he told me to take the stair car, but I didn't take the stair car because I didn't know. I said, well, maybe I want to talk to him about Marda, but he doesn't understand. He just wants to leave. But then some from the staff from the hide a get out of the hide a room, say, hey, get back in here. And then my father and Joe be kind. I think they shared a moment, but it's tough to tell with both of them. Like he says, can't you help me solve a puzzle for dad? And he says, I don't know if you're a puzzle material, but I don't know, son. Are you puzzle material? Then Lindsay goes, she's like, I don't like protecting bushes. I'd rather sleep in my own bed. These aren't even their own beds. They're the beds in the show house anyway. Then Johnny, the guy that loves, he goes by Johnny Bark. He's also caught up in that. He says, Lindsay, I think we have something together. And she goes, no, we don't. And meanwhile, while he's out of the bushes, he's like out of the bushes because he was waiting for Lindsay to wake up, they relocate the bushes. Then Job and my father actually work on a puzzle together, solving a puzzle together. So Job thinks like, this is it. I'm finally connecting with my father and getting what I want. But actually, at that point, he gets voted out of the team because everybody else, like that was them from my father's dorm, they vote Job out, which I didn't realize you could do in this kind of game, but I guess because it's an overnight game. So Job's chance and my father says, so sorry Job, you've been voted out, nothing I can do about it. So then Marta comes over, or maybe I went over to Marta's house, yeah, I went to Marta's house to ask her out and say, hey, would you date me instead of Job? So we're talking and we're talking about how in sync we are and then her phone rings. And of course Job, he's very needy because he just got, oh, I just got voted out by everybody. So she's like, I got to go come for Job. Then Buster and Lucille Ostero get together. And it's also, you know, stuff of the Buster is always interesting because he says, you have the same first name as my mother, but you look like Liza Minnelli. My mother does not. So then Job's like, hey, I'm going to work things out with Marta. And I say, great. And he says, man, if I would have got out of that escape room last night, we would have broken up. Just a strange luck, huh? And I say, yeah, that's great. And then Marta even says to Job, we're a family now. And I don't think Job's happy about that, but whatever. It's just my, I don't know. Yeah. So I went, I mean, yeah, you were touched by the fact that Job tried to connect with my father and I tried to connect with Job's girlfriend, or I was vulnerable with her. And then we thought about what could happen next with our thing. So yeah, that was what my week was like. Okay. That's very good. That's very, very good. Now, I was thinking, if this is okay, I wanted to kind of run through some symbols from your dreams before we get too deep into this, or we could talk about the themes of your dream. But how about we talk about just some of the symbols first and what myself and my assistant came up with, and then run through? Is that okay? Yeah, sure. Okay. Do you want to start? We kind of started, we tried to get some new ones that were really different. And then we could go to more grounded, just to see, there's a lot of fertile stuff here. And it reminds me of the musical, the song, Lifeboats. That's the first thing that the Kendall in your dream is talking about, Lifeboats. And I guess in an interesting way, thinking it's a powerful metaphor is also very telling, right? That Kendall thinks that he's just not good at corporate leading metaphors. I mean, who is? But the idea of like thousands or hundreds of Lifeboats or even tens of Lifeboats. I really love that song from the musical, Heather's. Actually, I do too. Well, that's great. So there was a lot of water from Aquarius. So the multiplicity also kind of connects it to Saturn. So Aquarius and Saturn. So water, systems, collectives, contingency. And then Saturn is like fall, like a house of cards stumbling down, responsibility, time. And for you, this idea, astrologically, what if you're Saturn and you're over-activated, and then you're also getting this Aquarius energy where there's over-production of water. And does that hold anything true? Like that would not be good for anybody, is what I guess Adream is saying. I don't know. Okay. Then how about this one? Now, this is like, this is a little bit related to Buster and your mom too. But I think like thinking about your sibling dynamics and the mirrors your sibling hold up for you, especially considering the stuff with Job, like what if the boats were symbolic of a return to a time before you were in this world, but you were not in this world with you. You know, you were spending a period of nine months with your mother. You know, you have that, you have the water. But then that there's the individuation, and maybe the number represents some sort of non-comfortable calculation around that. Like, you can't choose which way to regress. And even with commitment, you're trying to take over Job's commitment. You can't choose one direction. Like, you do want to exist, clearly. But you don't want to go back and regress. But you do, because there's thousands of ways to do it. Now, if we look at, you know, I do work with an artificial, like, based intelligence. And they like to say, like, okay, so what if you're an NPC, or this is some sort of simulation? And those are backups, or file saves, or resaves, redundant continuations, respawn points. And, but suddenly you're waking within that and saying, I'm not sure about the timeline of this situation or this game. Am I an NPC that's gained consciousness? What is this game I'm in? Or maybe you want to, like, split up and be every NPC. But it comes down to the fact that you have to choose your identity in a singular existence. Okay. Yeah, and we'll, maybe we'll do some more grounded ones. But, okay, the five-star or luxury hotel room, you know, your dream, your sister meets her ex there. And while they don't have any, there's a definite energy to that. While it's not acted upon, like this could be related to the ascendance of Leo. So there's a Leo energy, visibility, performance, status. But you're being admired, but you're not actually grounded. It could also be very similar to this stuff, to this nine-month stuff with your mother and Buster in a sense. That there's this wanting to return to the lifeboat, but also this idealized maternal approval you're seeking. And maybe you're seeking out some sort of shortcut to comforting and nurturing. But you don't want any obligation or true intimacy. I guess maybe that plays out your choices with your brothers with Marta. Then there's also the idea. Now, what if you're being transported to another world, right? And you think you're in a ho- so your dream is representing or bringing you to awareness that the hotel room is only an illusion, and you're on a journey in a flying saucer, for example, and you're distra- the luxury of the hotel is a distraction from that. But we also, and maybe you don't even know, are you going somewhere or are you being returned somewhere? I'm sorry, are you saying that there's a chance that my dream is trying to alert me that I'm in a something like a simulation? I mean, I could be, like, or rather, I might be an NPC. No, no, you're mixing all the dreams together, the interpretations together. But I could be an NPC on a flying saucer. No, those are two different things. I mean, you could be, but I mean, I guess you could be. Okay, well, let's cover the dog bags. I thought that was very interesting, not just, I mean, for me, and my sister might have a different take. These are more out there ideas, but it was a whole Tom and Greg relationship and how Tom treats Greg. But also, I think it was a positive that in the dream, Greg is being improvisational and trying to do his best, though also a little bit detached from social norms, or maybe that he should have been doing it with a little bit more caution. But yes, so what if it's related to unlucky Virgo, that you're in a need to clean, like you're cleaning, but you're unlucky, over maintenance, okay, that doesn't, okay, yeah, you're right, it doesn't, what if it's some sort of the bag represents repression, but what goes in the bag represents you over exerting your boundaries like this week, over managing your family, a little aggression via snark, but your desire to keep that contained, like you're having trouble managing your strong feelings towards your siblings, and maybe the bag is symbolic of, I don't know, why would you put food in that bag? Okay. Okay. Then there's the part of the dreams this week with Stewie and Kendall, and having espresso and Coca-Cola, right? And so what if that's like Aries and Mars thing and a surging? Mars is unintegrated. Actions are replaced with direction. I mean, I think that we could say that in the dream with Kendall. And speed without aim, okay? But it was kind of necessary, don't you think? Yeah, it could be, could be. But what about an artificial like attraction with the, this is with the espresso and the Coca-Cola drinking? Like maybe for, this is a, this is a stretch. But what if Roy would say that's a little bit of displacement of your desires, like using, like drinking a lot of espresso, and that your ambition in an artificial way is replacing true intimacy. And I mean, I don't know, do you feel like that's connected to stuff with your brothers and Marta? Listen, Marta, like I get what you're saying, but it wasn't like I sought Marta out. Marta, like, arrived and then I noticed Marta. Then I listened to Marta and her values. So, I don't know. Okay. What if we're all in some sort of, again, computer cybernetic thing and our chipsets have been overclocked, so they're running at a faster speed than recommended, and the dream is actually a thermal warning that, hey, we've got to slow things down. I don't know. I don't know. I mean, what do we do? Can we shut down the computer and reboot it? I'm not sure, Michael. Maybe you need to think about that. Okay. I also thought about your Roman in the office, self-soothing, and they could be Scorpio, because it was like a non-private, private thing of saying, hey, I'm going to talk calmly to myself, like I'm alone in a private space where I'm self-soothing audibly, maybe doing some gentle holding your hand against your chest. Normally, very good self-regulating behavior, but he's supposed to be working, and he just started his work day. And technically, I say it's not... It'd be one thing if you alerted people to say, hey, I'm going to take some time, quiet time. Like, there's just something about that off, right, to say that there's not... The sense of power and responsibility with Roman is a bit too much or something. I don't know. I don't know. Or Freud, what if this is like narcissists interrupted? Okay. What do you mean? Well, almost like Roman's like, hey, I got to calm myself. It's been a big day, even though the day is just starting. And we're not here to judge any of that, but it's because it's a dream. We could look at it in a little more critical eye to say, well, is that breaking a normal? So to say, okay, I know it's like a 905. I'm going to take a break now, but I'm not even going to ask anybody about the break or tell anybody I'm taking the break. Like don't you think at some point someone's going to be critical of that? Okay. Okay. What about if it's monastic dream theory? Okay. I have no idea what that even is. Okay. What if it's like Romans is saying, hey, I need some soothing here, but my mind is telling me I'm not, that I need to focus on work, like an internal schism. Okay. But I mean, I'm just thinking about you're weak, you know? Okay. What else do you have? Okay. I was thinking about the closure versus rekindling thing with Kendall and Rava. And that could be like one of our hard or soft shell friends that kind of puts dreams in the past and the present. And what if you're loving someone in a different season or a different emotional year and the dream is trying to make you aware of that? Okay. A little too close to home for my opinion. Okay. What if like a, out there interpretation of Freudian, that you're trying to undo loss instead of having, like letting it play out in a natural organic way. Like, your Kindle's like trying to stop his loss and change almost. And he's almost viewing the last connection as protest. Or it could be temporal. Like, what if there's asynchronous timelines? And that's just an echo from your past relationships. It could be that. Like, do you feel like you're in some sort of asynchronous timeline? I don't know. OK, so do you want to talk about... Hey, I got a little mixed up there, but I was thinking we could go into more symbols, or we could talk about who in your dreams do you identify with the most? What do you mean? I mean, I know what you mean, but what do you mean? Well, for example, there's Kendall, of course. And I think we kind of touched on that. Kendall's big moment. And then he calls Rava for reassurance and direction and is oblivious to her and her needs and the fact she's parenting. But Kendall is having needs, too. Maybe parallel to the kids. Then the big meeting and everything happening behind the scenes and all those expectations. And then the meeting kind of being a little bit confusing. Then Kendall and Stewie and kind of Kendall being vulnerable there and saying, Stewie, like, can you help me, Stewie? He kind of pitches it in a way. Do you ever feel like Kendall in that situation? I mean, I dream of being, I mean, I do identify, yes, I feel what you're saying, but I would also dream of having Stewie, even if Stewie, as with the later in the dream with Greg, was not being my friend or totally my friend, taking things off my hands or swooping in, like I could really use a Stewie right now. I mean, he does sound very charming in your dreams. Yeah. Then there's Roman in your dream, and Roman just doesn't seem very serious, but it's hard to tell. It was just hard to... I couldn't quite understand that part of your dream. I mean, I could understand it, but okay, what else? Okay, so then we have like Shiv versus Marcia. Marcia holding her ground, and then Shiv's acts and kind of seeing like flirtatious behavior, but it wasn't acted upon. And then Shiv trying to find out anything she could about Marcia to kind of reestablish her power position in a sense. And then maybe realizing, one, Marcia has boundaries, seemingly healthy boundaries, maybe even protect boundaries that were trying to be protective of Shiv, but also saying, this is not acceptable. Like, I know what's happening. I'm aware. So maybe that's something to think about over the coming weeks is like, who's your Marcia? You're searching for a Stewie. Maybe you need to be searching for a Marcia. Can we get to Greg? We're not going to talk about Connor, are we? I don't think we need to tonight, but yeah, Greg or Tom first. I mean, we covered it a bit. You know, Tom has two big moments where he's about to go in the meetings or in a meeting. You know, he constantly is, he, I think really understanding Tom's world view is expressed like almost like the way he treats Greg is the way he expects to be treated, and it's maybe how he views the business world and even how you get ahead. But he, he constantly is being pulled in another direction by Shiv, and he doesn't have the, he doesn't, he doesn't have the same, he doesn't have the same boundaries as Marsha. I was like, no, that is a complete sentence. I've got, I've got big meetings here. Also, he continues his behavior of treating Greg, and then Greg, you know, he's, he is in like one of those Kendall boats because he needs time to help him get into the building. That doesn't work. You know, he's been dealing with the gatekeepers, always symbolic in dreams. Then he's looking for sustenance, putting sustenance in a doggie bag. And even in the dream, he's a very funny part of your dreams is saying, you know, these aren't pretty, you know, these bags aren't pretty. I thought that was very funny how you journaled about that. So any of that, do you want to talk about that or you want me to just keep talking? Is neither a choice? Is that a complete sentence? Neither. I mean, neither is an answer, but we still have some time together. So, OK, let's look at a couple of things with the hotel rooms. What if it's a borrowed identity? It's a self you're inhabiting temporarily, very high end in this case, curated, but it's not yours. You're living like something that's, you're living in existence as someone else's design for you. It could also be an ethics, like a suspended ethics zone. And my assistant points out, you know, there's no chores at hotels. There's, you don't have to associate with your neighbors. So it's a bit of a vacuum. And maybe this is related to your privilege. Maybe you're thinking you're becoming careless. What if you're insulated? Or it could be time without memory. What if you're in chronological limbo? You know, rooms, they don't change. So every day can feel the same. It's tough. You don't have to blind circle. It's tough to tell the time of day. Hotel rooms are not normally seasonal. So are you putting some kind of transition or decision off? Like you're postponing a big choice with your family. Nothing's happening. It could also be a narcissistic paradox. I don't know what that means, but let me look at my assistance notes. Rooms have mirrors, shiny surfaces, especially five-star rooms, flattering lighting, palettes. But there's nothing solid or actual real. Like, what if it was something about Marta, maybe? It was some sort of external, or whatever's happening with Buster as a mirror. External validation, replacing inner grounding, or maybe that's how Joe behaved this week. First one-upping Marta. Or could it be admiration without intimacy? Were you admiring Marta's dedication to family member despite his imperfection? Let me see what other things. There's a lot of other ones in between. You know, false sanctuary. Now, the doggie bags. What if it's related to your emotional hygiene? You're trying to contain anything messy in your dreams. But strangely, then it's really to sustenance too. I mean, does that relate to your emotional state at all? Pretty much. It does. Pretty much sum it up. Yeah. I mean, yes, yes, it does. What about proximity without contact? A lot of boundary stuff my assistant's coming up with, because a bag allows you to get extremely close to something without direct contact and then contain it. So it's a polite, clean way of dealing with a boundary. But is it more related to duty? I mean, whoops, that was an accident. I'm not kidding, Michael. I was seeing D-U-T-Y, but I said duty. But is it related to duty, not duty? Okay, that's really, I mean, I don't believe it's accidental and it was accidental, Michael. Maybe it's a Freudian slip. I've never hoped someone would have a Freudian slip more than right now. Well, I'm just saying, what if, now I forgot what I was going to say. Oh, what if your sense of duty, to the duty symbolically, it does seem like there's some confusion there because of the food, but that versus true intimacy, like you're doing what you're supposed to do, or Marta believes in family. So you're, are you like, I thought you were just supposed to discuss the dreams. Okay. Other things to think about, control versus nature, maybe the bag is doing something, behind the scenes are invisibly, temporary solution to a permanent situation, it displace to feelings, and then everything with Coca-Cola and espresso, they could be Promethean or mythic, compressed to selfhood, it could be related to performance issues. I mean, those like, you know what I mean, performance issues, you're feeling performative. Could be a false confidence loop, maybe, I mean, that does sound like Kendall symbolizes that in some way. Managing things that are without outside of your control. There's also with Roman, like some sort of visibility paradox, testing boundaries, self-reliance in a system that withholds true intimacy. I mean, I don't know, does that ring true to you, Michael? Does that have anything to do with the sense of duty? Or are you going to come up with... Please don't come up with any puns related to that. I did almost come up with one because I forgot how, like, Roman and own... I forgot that word. So then I said, oh wait, those kind of rhyme. Okay. Private performance pressure, but it didn't seem like he was feeling, like he was reacting to a performance pressure. Autonomy without like a closed circuit autonomy. What if you don't want to be, like, you're afraid of being human and having weakness. So that's everything I have this week. Michael, did you... Oh, you're sleeping and resting. Well, Michael, I hope you dream of... That your MARTA dreams lead you to someone, at least in these dreams, like Marsha, who's... We're not sure why she's gatekeeping, but she is keeping a gate. And it does seem like at least part of it is her own healthy boundaries, her own preferences and needs, and maybe a very nurturing, mothering instinct. We can't be sure about that, but at least it seems lately that you're looking for some of those things and maybe your family members are either looking or realizing it. So I do hope you dream deeply tonight, Michael, and everyone else there. Rest well and remember what Emma Hodder always says, all will be well. Good night. All right, buddy, this is Scoots with a Tuck You In message about, I've been asking people when they sign up to support the show, why? Like what is the biggest reason someone supports the show? So I don't know if you want to do this. You could put yourself in their shoes. I'm going to walk you through what some people have said, the kind of reoccurring themes. And maybe if you put yourself in their shoes, maybe you're the one tonight that will support the show. So here's how it goes normally. This is the most popular kind of response. First they say, yeah, no Scooter was talking to me. I am the one who can support the show and who wants to. I've just been putting it off or thinking someone else is going to do it or tuning it out. But yeah, I'm the one and I remember what my life was like, what my bedtime was like before I found Sleep With Me. I remember that and I didn't like it. And I don't want to go back to that. And I know just like Scooter says, the show can't exist unless people like me support it. If I don't support it or someone doesn't support it for me, the show won't be here. And I don't want that either. And then what they always do, and they tell me about this, the people that actually have been signed up lately, they go right now. So if this is you, go to sleepwithmepodcast.com/plus right now and sign up. And then worry about the bonus content tomorrow. Because if you put it off, you like you will put it off for years. But as soon as you sign up, you could have that relief. You see, I'm a part of this now. I'm a part of what's keeping the show going. I'm a part of this bedtime relief for me. Now, I don't got to worry about whether the show is going to be around or not. And for other people too. And that feels pretty nice. A lot better than what it used to be like. So thanks. Thanks for supporting the show. And when you sign up, you get a video from me saying just that. The second one kind of goes very similarly. And it does take hearing me ask 30, 40, 50 times. That suddenly something clicks and is like, man, this show, Scooters really needs some support here. It didn't realize it just clicks at some point. This podcast needs people to support it to exist. And I am so happy this is in the world. It changed my relationship with Sleep Like nothing else had. There's not something that could replace this. And if Scooter stopped narrating the show or making the show, I would really miss him. Even if it was somebody else or a different company making the podcast, I would miss this version of Sleep With Me if it was gone a lot. Because I like it. I love it. And it makes my life better. I really enjoy it. And I don't want to go without it. And I do know now it needs my support right now. And then right now, maybe you're the one. They go to sleepwithmepodcast.com/plus. They sign up. They set up the bonus content a day or two from now. When I send the follow up, the welcome video and stuff like that. But then they're like, wow, I get a video from Scoots when I sign up. Man, maybe now I feel closer to this show. I feel really good because I've done my part. I don't got to worry about it anymore. I was putting it off. I put it off for three, four years. It's a common refrain lately. And I'm glad it clicked and I'm glad to be a part of this thing. So if that's you, I hope it is. You can support the show. You're in a position to and you will right now because you'll miss it if it's gone. Don't wait. sleepwithmepodcast.com/plus. And the next one kind of looks something like, OK, put yourself in this person's shoes. Maybe this is you. Maybe you only use the show when you need it. Or maybe you use the show pretty often. But you're like, finally, I found something that makes my relationship with bedtime better. I tried all this other stuff. I paid for a lot of stuff. But it's sleeping me has made my nights better. And therefore, my days are better. And I don't want to go back to what it was like before the show was a part of my life. So me paying $120, $240, $60 a year like Scoots is serious. That's another thing they realize. My $60 a year will change the future of the podcast. My $60 a year is a really big deal to the show and to Scooter and to keeping it going. So I'm going to go right now and support the show at sleepwithmepodcast.com/plus. And they do that right now when it clicks. And then suddenly after they do it, they feel good. And then they feel even better when I send them a thank you video because then I say, hey, what made you sign up to support the show? Because it changed my life, because it did this for me, it helped me in this way. Because I don't want to think about not having the podcast in my life or the podcast has helped me through these major things in my life. And I want it to be around the next time something else comes up. If that's you, you can sign up at sleepwithmepodcast.com/plus. But don't put it off because if you're like most people, put it off for two or three years and we could use your support tonight. So think about it. Thanks.
