Speaker 3:
[02:01] Just after midnight, on August 13th, 2020, three young adults gathered on the floor of a hundred-year-old house In Spokane, Washington.

Speaker 4:
[02:13] How are things going at first?

Speaker 5:
[02:15] At first, we were playing, it was pretty weird. We were playing on Ouija Board.

Speaker 4:
[02:19] Playing on Ouija Board?

Speaker 5:
[02:21] Yeah. And he, Anthony was talking about how he wants to summon a demon into the house even though he thinks the house is full of good spirits and he wants to summon the name Zozo or whatever. He wanted to, he was like begging for Zozo to come and like, you know, be there. I asked it a couple of things and got some interesting answers.

Speaker 3:
[02:48] It wasn't long after when dispatchers received a disturbing call from the residents. The caller is frantic, words overlap in a cavalcade of terror.

Speaker 6:
[03:31] Yes, ma'am, this is 911.

Speaker 7:
[03:33] What, where is, where are you at right now?

Speaker 8:
[03:37] Please, please stop multiple times.

Speaker 7:
[03:39] You're not breathing well.

Speaker 6:
[03:41] Kaylee, you need to do this.

Speaker 8:
[03:43] His name is Edward Martinez. Edward, Andrew Martinez.

Speaker 7:
[03:48] And is it your boyfriend that stabbed?

Speaker 8:
[03:54] Okay.

Speaker 6:
[03:54] We really need vertical assistance. Yeah, we're getting there, okay?

Speaker 3:
[04:00] Police arrived to find Anthony Brine's nude on the bedroom floor, covered in blood. 19-year-old Edward Martinez is on the run. Tonight's case file follows a night of fun that got way out of hand.

Speaker 4:
[04:23] Haley, Haley, look at me, okay? Haley, don't look over there.

Speaker 3:
[04:31] What you are about to hear describes real events, some of which may be unsettling. Listener discretion is advised. Good evening. You've reached the quiet end of The Antiquarium. Tonight we step briefly into the back room I keep closed to the passing crowd. I call it the Archivum Malorum. A simple name for a simple purpose. This is case number A004, the Ouija Board Threesome. Welcome to The Antiquarium of Sinister Happenings and Documented Atrocities. The earliest confirmed time stamp in the case is not a knife or a scream or a struggle. It's a call received a little before six in the morning on August 13th, 2020. The caller is described by Spokane Police as a distraught female reporting a stabbing, saying her boyfriend had viciously attacked her ex-husband and fled. That single sentence contains the shape of the entire story about to unfold. Boyfriend, ex-husband, one address, one night, and a violent act that collapses whatever fragile arrangement had been holding them together. But that arrangement did not begin as a crime story. It began as a marriage.

Speaker 8:
[07:07] We were, I don't know, I'm sorry this was so much, but we were all like messing around in the bedroom.

Speaker 4:
[07:13] Okay.

Speaker 8:
[07:13] And he just.

Speaker 4:
[07:14] Just prior to this?

Speaker 8:
[07:16] And he just snapped. And he was all into it. And I don't know why.

Speaker 9:
[07:20] Was everybody drinking today?

Speaker 1:
[07:21] Yeah. Okay.

Speaker 4:
[07:23] So, you guys were all messing around in the bedroom.

Speaker 9:
[07:25] What started, what precipitated the stabbing?

Speaker 8:
[07:28] I think that he couldn't get there, or he couldn't get hard. And I think that he was just intimidated or something. By your ex.

Speaker 4:
[07:35] So, that's why he's nude? Okay.

Speaker 1:
[07:38] How did the stabbing occur?

Speaker 8:
[07:40] We were just messing around in the bed, and he said it was okay. And the next thing I know...

Speaker 4:
[07:45] He said what was okay?

Speaker 8:
[07:46] Edward said it was okay that we were messing around.

Speaker 1:
[07:48] Okay.

Speaker 8:
[07:49] And then he started stabbing Anthony in the back, and Anthony said, Oh, stop, what are you doing? And I just jumped off the bed, and he just kept stabbing him.

Speaker 3:
[08:02] Haley Davis and Anthony Brines, a Corrections Officer, were married and living in Spokane. At some point, after an argument, Haley left for the Tri-Cities to be with family. While there, she downloaded a dating app, where she met 19-year-old Edward Martinez from Sacramento, California. Their relationship formed quickly, and less than a week later, Haley drove to Sacramento to live with him. Within a month, the two of them returned to Spokane to collect Haley's belongings at the home she had shared with her husband Anthony. Although, allegedly, Eddie didn't know the couple wasn't yet divorced, Anthony was well aware about the relationship the two shared, and appeared to be okay with it, even letting them live with him for close to three months. Haley and Eddie didn't have enough money to get back to California. Anthony still loved his wife, and because he did, felt like it was best if he befriended Martinez and helped them out. Jurors were later told that Anthony also wanted to ultimately reconcile with Haley. Sources do not describe constant chaos in these months. A later spokesman review report described them as living there, seemingly without any issues. That is, of course, until the evening of August 12th. Haley Davis, 22, and the two men were enjoying the night drinking gin and smoking marijuana, even taking time out to conduct a seance in an attempt to conjure up a demon. Eventually, Haley and her estranged husband agreed to have groups of checks. At about 3:30 a.m., the trio heads to the master bedroom. What happens next is a sequence of events that prosecutors and defense attorneys would later argue about. Because the legal difference between first-degree murder and a lesser homicide turns on one single word, premeditation. But the record contains an omission from Eddie that prosecutors relied upon, that the premeditation began in the bedroom. The court opinion describes this point with unusual clarity. Davis and Martinez began having sex, but according to her, after experiencing some performance difficulties, Martinez decides to leave the festivities to use the bathroom. He returns and proceeds to watch Davis and Brines engage in intercourse. Haley stops and approaches Eddie again, trying to get him involved. Haley is concerned when Eddie begins what she describes as maniacal laughing. It is later that Eddie admits his premeditation started regarding the murder of Anthony Brines. He himself confesses to the detective that he was, quote, smiling and laughing at her in a really fucked up way, end quote. And that he does this when he gets sadistic. In other words, the decision is not described as something that arrives after the fact or as an interpretation placed on him by investigators. The record reflects him giving it a name. The court opinion then describes an interval that becomes central. Martinez thinks for a moment. He told investigators during questioning that he started to feel a deep anger inside, just building and building. He decides he needs to find a knife and leaves the bedroom again.

Speaker 8:
[12:44] No, it's the scariest thing I ever saw.

Speaker 3:
[12:47] When Eddie gets back, he sits on the end of the bed and suggests Davis and Brine's change positions. Haley gets on her hands and knees facing the headboard, with Anthony behind her. When they resume intercourse, Eddie approaches and begins to stab Anthony in the back. Anthony yells at him to stop, when Eddie then pushes him off the bed and continues stabbing him in the chest.

Speaker 6:
[13:15] How many times do you think he stabbed him?

Speaker 8:
[13:17] Oh, God, so much. Before I thought he was punching him out first, it was probably 15, 16 times. Between the back and the chest. I could literally hear each of the holes gasping for breath in his lungs.

Speaker 3:
[13:36] All in all, Brian sustained 20 separate stab wounds. 14 to the chest and abdomen, 5 to the back, and 1 to the right arm. He suffers injuries to several organs, including both lungs, the liver, spleen, and large and small intestines. Haley immediately calls 911, throwing her phone under the bed so that Eddie couldn't disconnect the call. Eddie grabs her by the wrists and throws her on the mattress, telling her to get her belongings and go with him to California, saying, You never loved me, did you? And I killed him. He flees before officers arrive, leaving the bloodied knife in the living room on top of the fireplace mantle. Despite medical intervention and emergency transport to the local hospital, Anthony does not survive. Meanwhile, while the scene is still active and a perimeter is established, a K-9 team tracks down Martinez after a citizen tip comes in with a location.

Speaker 7:
[14:51] I've got a caller on the other line. His son called them from Spokane, Washington, saying he was running for his life. Is this the correct phone number? He's in Spokane, yeah. Yeah, okay, let me bring her on. Okay, ma'am, you're connected with Spokane Police.

Speaker 6:
[15:03] Go ahead. How long ago did your son call you? At 7-08. So about five, seven minutes ago. And he said he was running for his life. Did he say where he was at?

Speaker 7:
[15:13] Yeah, that's what he told us. And he said he's at the 1500 block of Wesley Avenue there in Spokane, Washington. There's a park near there. And he was walking in there, running in an alley and saw some stranger and asked if he could use the phone.

Speaker 3:
[15:30] He is taken into custody without incident and brought to the detective's office to be interviewed. Coming up, the moment questioning stops, followed by a single sentence that reopens the door. Welcome to the Antiquarium of Sinister Happenings and Documented Atrocities. The Ouija Board Threesome.

Speaker 2:

Speaker 3:
[18:52] Before we return to the Archivum, a matter of public safety. The FBI is seeking information on the whereabouts of Joe Matthew Constance. He is said to have been last seen forcing his way into his estranged wife's residence in Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana, on June 5th, 2011, threatening to shoot two of the occupants and physically assaulting another one while demanding to know her whereabouts. When he located her in another area of the home, he allegedly shot and killed her before fleeing the area. He is wanted for first degree murder, aggravated assault and aggravated burglary. Joe is a white male, born in 1967, 6 foot 2, 190 to 220 pounds. 19-year-old Edward Martinez finds himself in a police interrogation room in Spokane, Washington, handcuffed to the floor by a chain. He is interviewed by Brian Sesnick of the Spokane Police Department.

Speaker 4:
[20:35] With these rights of mine, do you wish to answer my questions?

Speaker 5:
[20:38] Is it, all right, if I have a lawyer present?

Speaker 8:
[20:41] You would like a lawyer?

Speaker 4:
[20:42] Yes. It is.

Speaker 3:
[20:45] Upon ceasing questioning, Detective Sesnick informs Martinez that he will be booked into jail for first-degree murder. This moment becomes the hinge.

Speaker 4:
[20:58] So what's going to happen? We're going to have someone come in here. We're seeking a search warrant to get photographs. Buckle swabs, which is your DNA, they'll be in here. When that's done, you're going to be booked into jail. And you're going to be charged with first-degree murder, okay?

Speaker 5:
[21:18] He is dead.

Speaker 4:
[21:19] He is dead? You killed him. If you change your mind and decide you want to talk to me about this, you can always send a kite.

Speaker 5:
[21:30] Yeah, I don't need a lawyer. Forget that. I know what I did and I'm not going to deny it.

Speaker 3:
[21:36] Eddie waves his rights and begins to talk. The trial court finds no threats, coercion or promises, and concludes his waiver is voluntary. All further statements he makes are now admissible. The Court of Appeals later affirms. From there, the factual narrative of the homicide becomes fused to Martinez own recorded account. As the Court of Appeals cites specific timestamps from the interview exhibit when describing his admissions. He talks about returning to the bedroom and seeing Brine's engaged in intercourse with Davis, being told to join in, and his internal shift.

Speaker 5:
[22:22] Haley comes on to me, wants me to have sex with her, right in front of him, and he's sitting like right there, like on the corner, at that distance from the bed. And...

Speaker 4:
[22:36] So whose room are you in now?

Speaker 5:
[22:38] I mean, we're in ours, and he's just in there. I was really drunk, so I couldn't, you know, I couldn't work anything up for some reason. I get that drunk sometimes. I can't, my body just goes numb. And I have a...

Speaker 4:
[22:49] So you couldn't get hard?

Speaker 5:
[22:50] Yeah, basically.

Speaker 4:
[22:51] Okay.

Speaker 5:
[22:52] So what happens next? She starts trying to get me somewhere. It's not working. I... We start messing around and then Anthony starts coming up rubbing mine and her feet. And just, I don't know, like it made me feel uncomfortable, but you know, I was already uncomfortable. So it just like added to it. And I just, I don't know, I started feeling a deep anger inside of me. Just building, building. And like after a while, I literally took a step in the bathroom. The light wasn't on. And all I can think in my head, as soon as I walk in that bathroom, is like literally I went to find a knife and then I just lost it.

Speaker 4:
[23:35] And then obviously you went back to the bedroom.

Speaker 5:
[23:38] Right.

Speaker 4:
[23:39] And so I- Did you do anything to them?

Speaker 5:
[23:40] No, I actually kind of did this pretty sneaky. And that's what I feel bad about is I was pretty sadistic about it. I took the knife and I literally hit it between my ass cheeks. So no one would see me walking in.

Speaker 4:
[23:53] You were completely naked at this point.

Speaker 5:
[23:54] Yeah.

Speaker 3:
[23:56] He admits the stabbing begins in the back and continues after he pushes Anthony off the bed and ends with stabbing him in the chest.

Speaker 5:
[24:05] And I just did what I never thought I would do ever. It was when I came back in the room taking a piss. And I see him now giving up, telling me to join in, knowing that I'm not going to. And I don't know what it was, but just seeing that and thinking about like just everything else adding up, I felt like nothing mattered. And like literally, I said f**k it. And I feel bad about it now. I feel remorse now. I genuinely miss Anthony because he was an RI friend. I don't know what drove me to f**king take his life. I couldn't stop. Because I used to go hunting. So I know the feeling of taking life. I used to like whenever we get a deer, the dog will go fetch it and it wasn't quite dead. When you shoot it with a shotgun, brings it back. I had to snap the necks of them and that actually gave me a rush. It was pretty, pretty gnarly. I haven't gone hunting in so long.

Speaker 3:
[25:16] Crucially, he identifies the start of premeditation as occurring in the bedroom before the weapon is achieved. This is the spin prosecutors later frame as choice. A decision, a pause long enough to form intent, followed by movement, out of the room, into the living room and back again. After the interrogation, he took time to write a letter to his girlfriend to apologize. According to court records, it included, Hey babe, I'm not gonna see you for a while. I fucked up. I ruined our lives. In September 2020, the state of Washington charges Edward Martinez with premeditated murder in the first degree. He was incarcerated in the Spokane County Jail on a $1 million bond. The case proceeds through the slow machinery of criminal court, motions, hearings, the confession hearing, the management of evidence, and witness preparation. The case wouldn't go to trial until April 2023, when Eddie is 22 years old. The jury hears the state's theory and the defense response. Deputy prosecuting attorney Michael Jolstad characterizes the case as a series of choices, culminating in the moment Martinez chooses to get a knife and stab Brian's with intent to kill. The defense disputes premeditation. In a later sentencing report, defense attorney Chris Bugbee argues the murder was not planned, saying Eddie did not know the episode would occur that night. He told jurors that his client was manipulated and abused by both Anthony and his wife to a breaking point that ended with an unintentional fatal stabbing. According to him, Eddie was under severe emotional pressure from his two sexual partners, a pressure that caused him to lash out uncontrollably and unexpectedly.

Speaker 6:
[27:44] This girl has created this situation. This person who stabbed my nephew, she is just as responsible for this as he is.

Speaker 3:
[27:56] The Ouija Board was also a factor. Martinez stating he felt like something overtook him after taking part in the demonic seance. Defense also went on to suggest that Haley began the relationship simply to get back at her husband, and that Anthony was just going along with the program to get his wife back. Even alleging that the two had been communicating behind Eddie's back with plans to send him back to Sacramento with an airplane ticket. Those arguments occur against the medical facts and the admission in the recorded interview. The jury returns a verdict. Edward Martinez is found guilty of first-degree murder. At sentencing, Spokane County Superior Court Judge John Cooney sentences Martinez to 324 months, 27 years, in prison. The sentencing report includes impact statements from Bryan's family members describing their loss and the court's remarks on the sheer brutality of the stabbing. Martinez appeals. He argues the trial court erred by admitting his confession and that there was insufficient evidence to prove premeditation. On February 11th, 2025, the Washington Court of Appeals Division 3 affirms the conviction and the trial court's rulings. The opinion concludes that, viewing the evidence in the light most favorable to the state, a rational tier of fact could have found premeditation beyond a reasonable doubt. Noting that Martinez procured the weapon, brought it to the bedroom, and confessed to premeditating the killing. As for Haley Davis, the sources provided here establish her role as the caller and as the link between the two men, wife of Anthony Brines and romantic partner of Edward Martinez at the time of the homicide.

Speaker 4:
[30:06] Any ever physical between you and him ever before this? No fighting at all?

Speaker 5:
[30:11] You never...

Speaker 4:
[30:12] How was you and Haley's relationship? Because obviously, I can only imagine the stress that that would put on her.

Speaker 5:
[30:18] Well, our relationship was pretty rocky for a while. Like not too rocky. Like we genuinely love each other. At least I feel like even if whatever happens, you know, I honestly feel like we have a kid on the way.

Speaker 4:
[30:34] You do? She's pregnant? I did not know that. So what do you want me to tell Haley?

Speaker 5:
[30:46] It's just a lot. Is it possible if I can write down a letter or something? Absolutely. I'd rather just do that.

Speaker 3:
[30:58] There are cases built out of strangers, an unknown suspect, a random victim, a motive that is never fully mapped. This one is built out of something smaller and more suffocating. 25 years lived and an absence does not diminish with sentencing dates or appellate opinions. For tonight, that is as far as the record will take us. I'll close the folder on this case, return it to its place in the Archive of Malorum and lock the door behind us. Out there, caution is its own kind of protection. Walk wisely. Until next time.

Speaker 5:
[32:13] I'm not going to see you for a while.

Speaker 8:
[32:17] I'm supposed to be a dad.

Speaker 5:
[32:31] Oh, my goodness.

Speaker 10:
[32:32] This is the same thing I had to go through.

Speaker 6:
[32:37] Why did I follow my dad's footsteps?
