Speaker 1:
[00:00] Hey, you, feeling hungry?

Speaker 2:
[00:02] Run to Denny's for...

Speaker 1:
[00:03] The new Eternia Everyday Value Slam, part of Denny's Slamming Meal Deals. And see the new Masters of the Universe Movie, only in theaters June 5th.

Speaker 3:
[00:15] Amazon presents Jeff vs. Taco Truck Salsa, whether it's Verde, Roja or the Orange One. For Jeff, trying any salsa is like playing Russian roulette with a flamethrower. Luckily, Jeff saved with Amazon and stocked up on antacids, ginger tea and milk. Habanero? More like habanero, yes. Save the everyday with Amazon.

Speaker 4:
[00:45] Your favorite local grocery stores like Kroger, Ralph's, Fred Meyer and more are now delivering on Uber Eats. Get 40% off your order of fresh quality ingredients. Speaker 5:
[01:16] Audio books, ad-free early access adventures, mailbag episodes, case file episodes, AMAs, behind the scenes micro-adventures authored by Watson himself, a Discord channel with nearly 2,000 chatty little members, merchandise discounts, exclusive events, and yes, done.

Speaker 6:
[01:30] Yeah, this is the most important bit, mate.

Speaker 5:
[01:32] Oh, patreon.com/sherlock and Co.

Speaker 6:
[01:36] Thanks.

Speaker 7:
[01:42] Obviously on Sherlock & Co.

Speaker 8:
[01:44] Metro port and please switch port.

Speaker 5:
[01:46] Yes, hello, this is Sherlock Holmes. Alert your specialist crime unit and the CID for Westminster. We have located Killian Evans. Get down here, Watson. He'll break out the back kitchen door in no time and we'll cut him off.

Speaker 6:
[02:01] You want me to jump out the window?

Speaker 5:
[02:03] Yes, I did.

Speaker 6:
[02:04] I know. Oh, fine. I'm going to do it. For one of these days, mate, someone is going to get really hurt. Oh, God, I landed on something. My elbow.

Speaker 5:
[02:22] You landed on someone. Hello there, Killian.

Speaker 6:
[02:29] No, I just quickly need to head over to Paddington.

Speaker 5:
[02:31] What? For what reason?

Speaker 6:
[02:33] The council? They haven't taken Nathan in. They haven't checked on him. And he's camping in his garden in this bloody weather because he can't get back into his house.

Speaker 9:
[02:41] Oh, my God.

Speaker 6:
[02:42] I know. I know. So I'm going to go get him somewhere safe. It's literally a couple of stops. I'll probably be at Buckingham Palace before you.

Speaker 7:
[02:48] OK.

Speaker 6:
[02:50] Nathan, everything's fine. You're not in trouble, mate. I just have some people that can sort you out, is all.

Speaker 7:
[03:02] What the hell is that? Screaming and voices. He said he was hearing screaming and voices. It's in the floor.

Speaker 6:
[03:20] Holy crap. That's a dusty rug.

Speaker 7:
[03:23] Oh, God.

Speaker 10:
[03:29] It's OK.

Speaker 6:
[03:30] It's OK. I'm coming. I'm coming to help.

Speaker 10:
[03:32] Turning up late to his own night. Oh, God, they're both, honestly.

Speaker 5:
[03:35] We're still technically early.

Speaker 8:
[03:37] Technically?

Speaker 6:
[03:38] Oh, Christ.

Speaker 8:
[03:38] If I were getting nighted, I would have camped out the night before.

Speaker 10:
[03:41] Where's Jon?

Speaker 9:
[03:43] Our thoughts, exactly.

Speaker 5:
[03:44] It is a mystery, and not a particularly intriguing one.

Speaker 7:
[03:49] No idea how far down I am.

Speaker 6:
[03:50] I must have done like five or six hundred steps. My knees are killing me.

Speaker 7:
[03:55] I don't know if I should be happy the distant screams have stopped, or concerned.

Speaker 11:
[04:00] Oh, you should be very concerned. Hello?

Speaker 6:
[04:06] Can you please just come out of wherever you are, so we can have a normal conversation, and I can help?

Speaker 11:
[04:10] Well, sounds pleasant. But I don't really have time for that.

Speaker 6:
[04:17] Oh, yeah?

Speaker 7:
[04:17] So, what do you have time for?

Speaker 11:
[04:20] Fortunately, my payback will be quite brief. Payback?

Speaker 9:
[04:54] Sorry, this is like my fifth attempt to do this. And I suck at it. This has been a hard, hard edit, and just everything has been so awful. And we're supposed to be the fun show. God, I sound like him. Guys, this is part three of The Three Garridebs. Please, please go in the episode description if you're concerned about what's coming. But as we all know, this is what John would have wanted. I could, basically I could hear his voice all through the edit. So yeah, this is for him. All of this is for him.

Speaker 8:
[06:23] Where are you sitting?

Speaker 5:
[06:24] In the area allocated for those receiving honours.

Speaker 8:
[06:27] Yeah, no, got that. I was talking to Mariana.

Speaker 9:
[06:30] Okay, well, Carol is gonna be near the front with you, Sherlock, but on the other side.

Speaker 8:
[06:36] And you and Jon?

Speaker 9:
[06:37] So we are kind of off to this side, but not at the back this time. Got a spot in the middle.

Speaker 8:
[06:43] I see you snuck a mic in. What happened? Did Jon get stopped at security or something?

Speaker 9:
[06:48] Oh, yeah, maybe that's it.

Speaker 10:
[06:50] No! Is that genuinely why he's not here?

Speaker 9:
[06:54] Sherlock, Stamford made a good point. Last time we were here, they threatened to kick Jon out if he tried to take the mic in.

Speaker 5:
[06:59] Oh, for goodness sake.

Speaker 9:
[07:01] So he's obviously...

Speaker 5:
[07:03] Tried and failed?

Speaker 9:
[07:05] Yeah.

Speaker 12:
[07:06] Oh, God.

Speaker 7:
[07:41] Oh, this is... This is not good, listeners. There's not anywhere near enough blood, which you might think is a good thing, but I'm sad to say that's probably the only way to stop internal bleeding. Breathing feels, okay, okay. I think lungs are clear, but there's no exit wound, which means the round is in there somewhere. It's central. I can see where it's gone in. Sternum, I think. Ah! I think I should probably start moving now, because that bullet is almost definitely next to my spine now. Ah, but I'm panicking. Getting shot in a dark tunnel. We'll do that. Slow breath, slow breath, slow breath. Okay, so, so, um, it's okay, I can't, I can't move. Uh, no one knows I'm here. This is not... This is not good. This is... good. Oh, man.

Speaker 6:
[11:07] Oh, God, I wish...

Speaker 7:
[11:10] I wish I was at Buckingham Palace. Timson.

Speaker 8:
[11:24] Come on, John, where are you?

Speaker 7:
[11:26] Jesus. It's starting to feel... Well, not... not feel... in this instant. My legs... same for the... tips of my fingers. My... head is very fuzzy. Well, listeners, I... for once, I don't really know what to say. I hope this isn't causing anyone distress. hell, I think I'm black. I really don't know if I'm holding on all that well here. Um. You know, I've seen enough people die from sudden trauma to know that it's always a surprise when it suddenly happens, when the light switches off beyond your control. And that's why I just want to say this, not because I know I'm recording, but I would have said it even if I didn't have the mic. I love you all, very much.

Speaker 6:
[14:14] You've made my whole life, my whole life.

Speaker 7:
[14:25] I couldn't be more grateful to have spent this time with you, with Archie, with Mariana.

Speaker 6:
[14:42] Fine even with bloody Graham.

Speaker 7:
[14:50] I'm really sorry, Mum. Can everyone email her and just give her support? Well...

Speaker 9:
[15:02] Oh, hey, Carol.

Speaker 13:
[15:03] Hello again, darling. Still know Jon?

Speaker 9:
[15:05] Oh, we don't know. Really weird, right? We think because of his microphone, it...

Speaker 13:
[15:12] What?

Speaker 9:
[15:13] What is it?

Speaker 13:
[15:13] He wouldn't miss this. He absolutely would not miss this. Something's not right.

Speaker 9:
[15:19] Carol, Carol, just sit down a second. We think maybe a security...

Speaker 13:
[15:22] Where is my boy?

Speaker 8:
[15:23] Okay.

Speaker 9:
[15:23] Where is my boy?

Speaker 13:
[15:25] Hey, hey, it's okay.

Speaker 9:
[15:26] It's over.

Speaker 8:
[15:26] Sorry, Emery.

Speaker 7:
[15:33] You know, upside is heaven. That's a plus. I mean, I know I do a lot wrong. I have a lot. You know, I'm far from perfect, but I think I'd get in. Just in terms of being the kind of average person. And I think my dad would have made it too.

Speaker 14:
[16:24] See, he can pick me up at the gates, you know?

Speaker 7:
[16:31] Like he did at school.

Speaker 14:
[16:36] When he was home.

Speaker 7:
[16:43] Mary will be there, there's no doubt about that, straight in. But it's, it's, it's hard to leave here. It's really hard. The thing about death is, they say life is a party, don't they? And what makes death difficult to accept is the party's gonna carry on. The party is gonna carry on, but you have to leave. You have to leave, and that... that hurts. That hurts. Let's watch this. I might have to give in to the... I should just switch off here. Sorry, everyone. I'm really, really sad. Sorry. Mariana, if you get this...

Speaker 9:
[19:02] So, he very kindly went to help a vulnerable old man.

Speaker 8:
[19:06] Who did?

Speaker 9:
[19:07] John.

Speaker 8:
[19:08] Old, vulnerable, what do you mean?

Speaker 13:
[19:10] His phone isn't, nothing is bloody happening.

Speaker 5:
[19:14] Is there any sign of John yet?

Speaker 2:
[19:15] Sherlock, you're meant to be up there.

Speaker 5:
[19:17] Still no sign of him, at all?

Speaker 9:
[19:19] Nothing, and we're calling, okay?

Speaker 2:
[19:21] We are trying.

Speaker 5:
[19:22] And his phone isn't on?

Speaker 9:
[19:24] It would appear not.

Speaker 8:
[19:26] Oh God, his phone's always on, I mean, Swindon are playing for God's sake.

Speaker 5:
[19:30] Something's wrong.

Speaker 13:
[19:31] That's what I said.

Speaker 5:
[19:32] Carol, wait here. He may arrive. You call us if he does. Mariana, Stamford with me.

Speaker 9:
[19:38] Oh God, the king is going to be so mad. Hi, we do this all the time.

Speaker 10:
[19:44] Just running around for one place to the next. Yeah, I know. I listen to the show, don't I?

Speaker 5:
[19:49] Down this way.

Speaker 10:
[19:50] To where exactly, Sherlock?

Speaker 5:
[19:52] To one of the Three Garridebs.

Speaker 10:
[19:55] Art Deco guy, yeah?

Speaker 5:
[19:57] Exactly that, Mr. Stamford.

Speaker 10:
[19:59] Doctor?

Speaker 5:
[20:00] Oh, yes, sorry, I forget that sometimes. That is where Jon headed off to. And here, here we are.

Speaker 9:
[20:09] He said the garden. The guy had been camping in his garden?

Speaker 5:
[20:11] Nation, yes, through the side gate.

Speaker 10:
[20:15] John? Jon!

Speaker 9:
[20:17] Jon!

Speaker 5:
[20:18] He did arrive here, the long grass trodden down by a shoe his size, here and here. He came through the gate like we did, then he doubled backed.

Speaker 10:
[20:29] Then where did he go?

Speaker 9:
[20:30] Are you looking for Nathan?

Speaker 10:
[20:32] Er, kind of, yeah. I've got him in here.

Speaker 5:
[20:36] I found him in his garden.

Speaker 3:
[20:37] He's just warming up with a cup of tea.

Speaker 10:
[20:39] Oh, wow. Okay. Our friend John, is he with you? Who? Jon, a friend of ours. He came to check on... No, I've not seen anyone else. Okay, erm, this way. Whoa, whoa, whoa, what? Sherlock! He won't be in the house, will he? The whole point he came in is that Nathan couldn't get in... Is that... Is that door off its hinges?

Speaker 9:
[21:10] Come on, let's go in.

Speaker 14:
[21:11] Oh, Jesus.

Speaker 10:
[21:19] John, you here, mate? Swindon have scored?

Speaker 9:
[21:27] Nope. Not here.

Speaker 14:
[21:31] What is it, Sherlock?

Speaker 5:
[21:33] The pattern. The brickwork pattern.

Speaker 10:
[21:36] Yeah, follows the winding stairs.

Speaker 5:
[21:40] Yes, it's a helix, but it continues right into the ground where there aren't any stairs.

Speaker 14:
[21:48] Yeah.

Speaker 5:
[21:49] But the pattern signifies the stairs, the escalation up and down a vertical axis. But following the wall of the building, could the pattern denote further stairs, a descension as well as ascension?

Speaker 8:
[22:04] I don't think the building goes any higher, mate.

Speaker 5:
[22:06] No, but it may go lower. We follow it. Follow it. The brickwork pattern. He was commissioned in 1939, of course. Garrideb was most likely asked to construct something, something concealed, something hidden in plain sight beneath the glamour of his modernistic works. There had to be something, something functional, necessary. And this pattern is the pathway. It can be followed to a rug. The rug he told me to get away from. They cleared out the whole house, but for the rug, the rug, that has now been disturbed.

Speaker 3:
[22:50] Oh my God.

Speaker 14:
[22:51] What on earth?

Speaker 5:
[22:53] It leads to a door. Jon!

Speaker 3:
[23:25] Oh, my God.

Speaker 5:
[23:26] No, no.

Speaker 3:
[23:27] Jesus.

Speaker 5:
[23:29] John, tell me you're not hurt. Tell me you're not. John, can you hear me? Stamford. Hi.

Speaker 9:
[23:39] Okay, okay, it's okay. We're here. We're here.

Speaker 2:
[23:42] No.

Speaker 9:
[23:44] We're here. John, hey, hey, we're here. You're safe, okay?

Speaker 8:
[23:49] Hello, mate.

Speaker 2:
[23:50] Hello, mate.

Speaker 10:
[23:51] I'm just gonna inspect, okay?

Speaker 13:
[23:53] Okay, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know.

Speaker 8:
[23:56] Keep that head up for me, yeah?

Speaker 5:
[23:58] We must apply pressure.

Speaker 8:
[23:59] No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, he's in.

Speaker 14:
[24:01] He's bleeding internally.

Speaker 8:
[24:04] We'll leave that for now, won't we, mate, hey? Okay, keep him nice and still. Nice and still, nice and calm. Keep that airway open, yeah? Mariana, can you run up top just to see if the emergency services have arrived?

Speaker 9:
[24:19] Yeah, sure, sure.

Speaker 10:
[24:20] When they do, panamedic's down here right away.

Speaker 8:
[24:22] Okay, we're not bringing him up. Possible spinal fracture, so trauma board, head straps and brace.

Speaker 10:
[24:27] He's breathing's weak. He'll need immediate high flow oxygen. Okay. All right?

Speaker 9:
[24:32] Yeah, okay, I'm going, I'm going. Okay, it's going to be okay, John, okay? It's going to be okay.

Speaker 5:
[24:41] Sherlock, I'm here, John.

Speaker 8:
[24:49] Here.

Speaker 5:
[24:53] Cold hands. Warm heart.

Speaker 8:
[25:01] I'm gonna go and assist. I think, I think they've arrived, and that entryway is tight.

Speaker 5:
[25:07] All right. Right here, Jon. Right here.

Speaker 12:

Speaker 2:
[26:15] K-pop demon hunters, Saja Boys Breakfast Meal and Huntrix Meal have just dropped at McDonald's. They're calling this a battle for the fans. What do you say to that, Rumi?

Speaker 13:
[26:23] It's not a battle.

Speaker 2:
[26:25] So glad the Saja Boys could take breakfast and give our meal the rest of the day.

Speaker 5:
[26:29] It is an honor to share.

Speaker 2:
[26:30] No, it's our honor.

Speaker 5:
[26:32] It is our larger honor.

Speaker 15:
[26:34] No, really, stop.

Speaker 2:
[26:36] You can really feel the respect in this battle. Pick a meal to pick a side.

Speaker 3:
[26:43] I participate in McDonald's while supplies last.

Speaker 16:
[26:46] This episode is brought to you by State Farm. You know those friends who support your preference for podcasts over music on road trips? That's the energy State Farm brings to insurance. Speaker 9:
[27:22] Oh, hey, look at you, full look. Lab coat and everything.

Speaker 8:
[27:27] I'm on my break, so.

Speaker 9:
[27:29] Right.

Speaker 8:
[27:29] But I was chatting with Dr. Moore and Dr. Sharma.

Speaker 9:
[27:34] Right, and what do they think?

Speaker 8:
[27:40] His vital signs are actually okay. What they are concerned about is that the surgery itself is a high-risk strategy. They don't do many bullet wounds near the spine, but they do work with spinal complications a lot, and they know how temperamental they can be.

Speaker 5:
[28:08] Can he walk, Stamford?

Speaker 8:
[28:11] What they're essentially saying is they've done everything they can. The likelihood on that, on walking in particular, is low. Oh, God. But not, not zero. All right, it's in, it's in Jon's hands.

Speaker 9:
[28:38] Yeah.

Speaker 8:
[28:39] Yeah. I just wanted to come up and give you extra details where I could, you know.

Speaker 9:
[28:47] Thank you. Thank you, because that's really helpful.

Speaker 8:
[28:51] That's the least I can do. Least I could do. Can I say a quick hello?

Speaker 9:
[29:00] Of course you can.

Speaker 8:
[29:08] I've come to put your bullet in a jar. I thought you might like that. I was supposed to give these two some news the other day, but you weren't around, and now you are.

Speaker 14:
[29:33] So, yeah.

Speaker 8:
[29:39] Nadia and I are having a baby. And we'd love to borrow your name, if that'd be alright, mate. As a middle name, obviously. And if you could be the godfather, too, we'd really appreciate that. He'd do a Marlon Brando, if he was awake right now, wouldn't he?

Speaker 9:
[30:15] Yep, he would.

Speaker 8:
[30:22] Um, good, good doctoring in that tunnel, by the way, mate.

Speaker 14:
[30:30] I saw how close that thing was to your spine.

Speaker 8:
[30:33] You must have been, God, you must have been flat as a pancake for about an hour. That's top work, mate.

Speaker 14:
[30:45] Anyway, I will see you in a bit, all right?

Speaker 8:
[30:52] I'll see you in a bit.

Speaker 9:
[30:55] Bye, and congratulations.

Speaker 14:
[30:57] Cheers. Thanks.

Speaker 5:
[30:59] Bye, Stamford.

Speaker 9:
[31:06] That's sweet. He's gonna be a dad.

Speaker 14:
[31:11] Hmm.

Speaker 5:
[31:15] There is another Jon out there that I never met, that I never compromised. One that was never dragged on any silly adventures, chased any dangerous criminals.

Speaker 9:
[31:32] No, no, Sherlock, come on.

Speaker 5:
[31:33] And that Jon is alive. Well, probably married, if not at the least in love. Could have had a child, could be thinking about having children, but no.

Speaker 9:
[31:52] Sherlock, he loves you, okay? And he loves his life.

Speaker 5:
[31:56] Yes. Well, I have damn near cost it.

Speaker 9:
[31:59] No, you haven't.

Speaker 5:
[32:00] We ruptured an underground human trafficking network I couldn't even see. I couldn't even see Mariana that they clearly rebuilt. Almost immediately, The Three Garridebs, Houston, Victoria, Paddington. It was a Royal Mail Rail Line, a commissioned but unused extension from the war. Garrideb was tasked to build their street level frontage.

Speaker 9:
[32:23] Those were the houses.

Speaker 5:
[32:25] Exactly that. Nathan talked of hearing screaming, and now I know he was telling the truth. I got cocky. I indulged myself in a knighthood, for goodness sake. A knighthood. Without what? Checking that we had even severed the head of the snake, dismembered the cruel probing limbs of our enemy. Of course a convicted murderer on the run suddenly appeared in the Victoria Garrideb. Of course he did. He didn't come in the front door or the back or abseil from the ceiling. He came from below, where he operates. And so clearly do others. Nathan reached out to Jon because he saw what he was. An ordinary, kind man. We all know what he saw in me. What I see now. Jon went. Jon saw it and faced the threat head on. All the while I sat in a palace, awaiting ceremonial praise.

Speaker 9:
[33:48] Do you think he can hear you right now?

Speaker 5:
[33:51] I have no idea.

Speaker 9:
[33:53] I don't think he can.

Speaker 5:
[33:55] You don't?

Speaker 9:
[33:56] No. Want to know why?

Speaker 5:
[33:58] Go on.

Speaker 9:
[33:59] Because if he could hear you, he would rise up out of that bed and beat you over the head.

Speaker 5:
[34:05] Well, that would be both miraculous and unpleasant.

Speaker 9:
[34:09] This is not your fault. This is not Jon's fault. You don't need to fault find. He sure as hell wouldn't want you to. You're not an employee. You're not a corporation. You don't go trying to reassure shareholders, this won't happen again or whatever. You be here for him, like you have been. That's all he would want you to do, be here with fear. Yes, with sadness, of course, but with shame and guilt? No, you may as well be at home, Sherlock. Archie could do with the company. If the bullet didn't kill him. Knowing that you felt responsible in some way for what happened, that, that, that absolutely would. That absolutely would. That would end him.

Speaker 5:
[35:07] Cause of death? Sherlock Holmes is shame.

Speaker 9:
[35:12] Exactly.

Speaker 5:
[35:14] Thank you, Mariana.

Speaker 9:
[35:16] It's okay. It's okay. I'm sorry for ranting.

Speaker 5:
[35:19] It's okay. Rants can have a way of getting to the point. I'd rather appreciate them from time to time.

Speaker 9:
[35:27] Sorry for ranting, John. I'm only doing it because I love you both. I know you can hear us. I was just being... Well, kind of like you. Maybe I was channeling you. I don't know. Maybe this is the power of the microphone.

Speaker 5:
[35:44] What happens now?

Speaker 9:
[35:46] Oh, they have post-surgical scans to dock us through, I think.

Speaker 5:
[35:52] No, with that.

Speaker 9:
[35:56] The microphone? Oh, the show. I will think about that. Yeah, I will think about it.

Speaker 13:
[36:18] Hello again, lovely. I took Archie for another walk today. He's enjoying his little Wiltshire getaway. Oh, it was so nice to be sat by your side these past few days. You've got some colour in your cheeks. Doctors are saying lots of wee is coming out nicely as well, so well done on that. And, yeah, I'll give you another message tomorrow.

Speaker 5:
[36:43] That's the latest from Carol for you. There's a few more fans here.

Speaker 15:
[36:48] Hi, Jon. I heard from Mariana about what happened.

Speaker 14:
[36:53] I'm so sorry to hear that, and I'm sending you all the luck in the world.

Speaker 17:
[36:57] Get well soon, Jon.

Speaker 15:
[37:00] Jon, please, please get better soon. We miss you and we love you and you can do this. Stay strong, please. Hi, I saw on your mum's Facebook that you weren't doing so well, Jon.

Speaker 2:
[37:16] Please take all the time that you can. We're all praying for you, John Watson.

Speaker 15:
[37:21] Lots of love.

Speaker 5:
[37:24] And another one has just popped up.

Speaker 17:
[37:27] Oh my God, Jon, I'm so sorry to hear about what happened. I hope you're doing okay. I'm sending lots of love and positive thoughts. But I also think this does serve as a reminder......to stay out of my business, don't you think? Moran sends his love. So sad.

Speaker 5:
[37:52] No.

Speaker 17:
[37:53] So unfortunate.
