Speaker 1:
[00:00] Welcome to our Daily Rosary Meditation. This is the next in our series of Friendship with Jesus and the Commandments. Today, the Seventh Commandment. Let's begin in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Speaker 2:
[00:12] Amen.
Speaker 1:
[00:13] Let's call to mind all those we've promised to pray for. I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate. He was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day, he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
Speaker 2:
[00:43] I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.
Speaker 1:
[00:52] Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be your name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Speaker 2:
[00:58] Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
Speaker 1:
[01:09] Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Speaker 2:

Speaker 2:
[01:48] As it was in the beginning as now never shall be, world without end. Amen.
Speaker 1:
[01:52] Our first mystery. Many of us think we're safe when it comes to the Ten Commandments, especially with the Seventh Commandment, you shall not steal. We think, well, I haven't robbed a bank or broken into a liquor store recently, but that's far too narrow. Theft is taking what isn't yours when you know the owner would not reasonably agree to it. So we break the Seventh Commandment when we take what we do not deserve or give less than we owe or keep what God entrusted to us for others. And once we see that, this commandment reaches into nearly every part of life. Because theft includes doing your work poorly on purpose, being paid for effort you don't give, and it includes employers failing to pay a just wage, or workers wasting time on the clock. It can be overcharging or taking advantage of someone who has no better option. It also includes failing to honor agreements, promising work or payment and not following through, using company resources for personal use without permission. But theft is also taking credit for someone else's work, or giving less than what was promised through dishonest effort or metrics. Not paying debts when you're able, or taking advantage of someone's generosity, or damaging another person's property through negligence without making it right. All these things fall under theft, because at its core, theft is not just about things, it's about justice in relationships. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be your name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Speaker 2:

[06:19] Oh, my Jesus.
Speaker 2:
[06:20] Forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those most in need of thy mercy.
Speaker 1:
[06:28] Our second mystery. Theft is about taking more than you give. Let's take a simple case. Someone pays you good money to do a job, and you do a poor job, lazy work, work that is less than they have a right to expect. You're taking good money for bad work. That's stealing. Or suppose someone does good work for you, and you find a way to pay less than the work is worth, less than what is fair for you to give. And for them to expect. You're giving poor payment for good work. That also is stealing. The same applies if you sell a product you know isn't worth the price, or offer a service you know does not truly benefit the other person. In every case, the pattern is the same. You're taking more than you give. Now it's true, price and value can vary. Not everything has a perfectly fixed value. But justice still applies. If you knowingly take something that benefits you while giving something you know does not truly benefit the other person, then you are not loving your neighbor as yourself. There it is. The principle that should govern all economic exchanges is do to others what you would have them do to you. It's the golden rule. And it's at the heart of the seventh commandment. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be your name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Speaker 2:
[08:17] Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Speaker 1:
[10:34] Oh, my Jesus.
Speaker 2:
[10:35] Forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those most in need of thy mercy.
Speaker 1:
[10:43] Our third mystery. If we want to live the seventh commandment well, we have to get two principles straight. The first is this. We are not the absolute owners of what we have. We are stewards. God created the goods of the earth, land, food, resources, for the benefit of every human person. This is called the universal destination of goods. At the same time, individuals have the real right to own property. This allows us to provide for our families, to take responsibility, to contribute to society. So both are true. But here is the key. Private ownership is real, but it is not absolute. Everything we have is entrusted to us by God, and it's meant to be used not only for ourselves, but also for the good of others, especially those in genuine need. And Jesus gives a striking example in the parable of the rich man in Lazarus. The rich man is not condemned for being rich. He's condemned because he ignored the poor man right in front of him. He treated what he had as if it were only his, instead of a gift entrusted to him by God for the good of others. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be your name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Speaker 2:
[12:36] Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
Speaker 1:
[12:47] Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee, blessed art thou among women, blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Speaker 2:
[12:53] Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us in earnest now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Speaker 1:
[12:58] Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee, blessed are thou among women, blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

[13:17] Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us in earnest now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

[13:29] Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us in earnest now and at the hour of our death.
Speaker 1:

[14:05] Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us in earnest now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Speaker 1:
[14:10] Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with the blessed art, among women blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Speaker 2:
[14:17] Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us in earnest now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Speaker 1:

Speaker 1:
[14:46] Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
Speaker 2:
[14:49] As it was in the beginning is now, never shall be world without end. Amen.
Speaker 1:
[14:53] Oh, my Jesus.
Speaker 2:
[14:54] Forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those most in need of thy mercy.
Speaker 1:
[15:01] Our fourth mystery. Think of a large family with a big passenger van. You know, one of those vans that holds like a hundred kids. Sometimes kids come up with a system for seats. You know, I called it, and the one who calls the front seat first gets it. Everyone accepts the rules. But imagine the oldest kid says, I call the front seat and every other seat, and no one else gets a seat today. At that point, the parent steps in. No, that's not how this works. This van exists so everyone can ride. The problem isn't that one child has a seat. The problem is when one person takes so much that others can't ride at all. Private ownership is real, but it was never meant to exclude others from what they need to live. And that's what happens when we treat what we have as if it exists only for us, instead of something entrusted to us by God for the good of all. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be your name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Speaker 2:
[16:22] Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
Speaker 1:
[16:33] Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Speaker 1:
[18:40] Oh, my Jesus.
Speaker 2:
[18:41] Forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those most in need of thy mercy.
Speaker 1:
[18:49] Our fifth mystery. So the seventh commandment is not just taking what isn't yours when you know the owner would not reasonably agree to it. We also have to ask, am I taking more than I give? Am I giving less than I owe? Or am I living as if what I have is simply mine, rather than something entrusted to me by God for others? The Catechism, quoting St. John Chrysostom, puts it sharply, not to enable the poor to share in our goods is to steal from them and deprive them of life. The goods we possess are not ours, but theirs. Now, that doesn't mean we truly don't own anything. It means we are accountable for how we use what we own. Because in the end, the question is not simply, have I taken what is not mine? The deeper question is, have I kept for myself what God gave me for the good of others? And that is where this commandment reaches the heart. The Seventh Commandment is not just an arbitrary rule imposed from outside. The commandment is an expression of who God is. God is love, and He made us to be love. So what happens when we break this commandment? We tend to think I broke a rule, but that's not what's really happening. God offers Himself, love in person, and I say, I choose something instead of you. Because when I take more than I give, or give less than I owe, I am not just failing in justice. I am refusing Him who comes to me. Jesus makes this unmistakably clear when He said, Whatever you did not do for the least of these, you did not do it for me. Jesus has hidden Himself in those who depend on us. So in the end, the question is not simply, have I taken what is not mine? The deeper question is, have I chosen something instead of Christ? And that is the real question at the heart of the Seventh Commandment. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be your name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Speaker 2:
[21:37] Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
Speaker 1:

Speaker 1:
[23:56] Oh, my Jesus.
Speaker 2:
[23:57] Forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those most in need of thy mercy.
Speaker 1:
[24:04] St. Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits, who prowl throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls. In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.
Speaker 2:
[24:27] Amen.
Speaker 1:
[24:29] What caught your attention with that reflection, Teresa Ohm? Thou shalt not steal.
Speaker 2:
[24:35] Once again, I'm really struck by how the modern era has kind of changed, how we approach some of these commandments or how we could partake in these sins. Because I think one thing that I didn't think about for a large part of my life and then really hit me this year was pirating.
Speaker 1:
[24:56] Oh, yeah.
Speaker 2:
[24:56] You know what pirating is. It's just so easy because nowadays with streaming, you watch everything online. You can watch any movie or any show online. So it doesn't feel that different if you're going to watch it on Hulu or Amazon Prime or Netflix or just whatever random site, you can find it for free. Or for instance, with hockey for a very, very long time, I was like, I can't keep up with ESPN. And there's some that are only on NBC or the blackout rules for different teams where you can't watch every single game. Every time the Blues play the Bruins, I can't see it, things like that. And I was like, oh, well, I can just look it up the game and see if I can find it somewhere online. And then it literally wasn't till this year that I was like, that's stealing because the action doesn't seem the same. They're different at all. It's just watching something online. And I think there are a lot of little, you could call them cyber crimes, that are easy to not think of as crimes or as problems or as sins because it looks the same or it feels the same or it seems the same and it doesn't seem as if anyone's getting hurt.
Speaker 1:
[26:16] There it is because we've detached it from a person.
Speaker 2:
[26:23] But it doesn't even matter because it's not even fully about, oh, I'm so worried about hurting this corporation. It's wrong for me to steal.
Speaker 1:
[26:34] Right. But it's easy for us to fall into these sins because we have detached it from personal. So let's say, let's say you know, like when I grew up, there were these little neighborhood grocery stores and you knew the family that owned the store. So you didn't want to go down to the store and steal a candy bar because you knew the family had directly impacted them. Because this is what I think is striking. The Seventh Commandment really is about all economic transactions. And the guiding rule of all economic transactions should be the Golden Rule. That I should do to you what I would want you to do to me.
Speaker 2:
