[02:52] Yesterday, they brought in a load of trees. The day before that, they piped in a bunch of salt water. And the day before that, they were squeezing a small mountain through the front door. Now sand? When's this party going to be ready?

[03:50] Well, we're celebrating an Earth that's 4.5 billion years old, so...

Speaker 3:
[03:56] Got it. G-Force is older.

Speaker 4:
[03:57] Hush, fingerling. I'm a teenager.

Speaker 2:
[04:01] Now, if you will all kindly follow me inside. Or is it outside?

Speaker 1:
[04:09] Outside?

Speaker 5:
[04:10] Uh, I don't get it.

Speaker 2:
[04:34] Well, technically, it's a baby Grand Canyon. The actual one was a few inches too wide to get through the door.

Speaker 1:
[04:41] What in the?

Speaker 5:
[04:43] Look, everyone, it's the beach.

Speaker 3:
[04:47] Wow, an indoor beach. Now I've seen everything.

Speaker 5:
[04:50] Yeah, an indoor gingerbread mansion beach. What's the sand made out of, crushed up graham crackers? Let me taste and see.

Speaker 2:
[04:57] Oh, Dennis, I wouldn't.

Speaker 5:
[05:00] Ew, Mindy, the sand is made out of sand.

Speaker 1:
[05:03] Mindy, you brought in sand and ocean water from the beach to create a beach inside your gingerbread mansion?

Speaker 7:
[05:11] Well, yeah.

Speaker 2:
[05:13] I mean, it's an Earth Day party and you know I love a good theme.

Speaker 3:
[05:17] And I love this waterfall. Look at that. What were the shipping costs on this baby?

Speaker 1:
[05:23] Is this what you mean by an inside out party?

Speaker 2:
[05:26] Well, I guess it's more of an outside in party. I mean, you can't have a party for Earth without inviting the Earth.

Speaker 5:
[05:35] Yes, you can.

Speaker 2:
[05:37] But why would I want to? Earth is the guest of honor and we are going to celebrate it until the sun comes up. Which is over the kitchen counter over there.

Speaker 5:
[05:48] What?

Speaker 3:
[05:49] Oh, bye, Callie. She brought the sun.

Speaker 4:
[05:52] Whatever.

Speaker 3:
[05:53] What an Earth Day this is turning out to be.

Speaker 5:
[05:56] Actually, what is Earth Day anyway?

Speaker 1:
[05:58] Oh, that's a great question, Dennis. Earth Day is a day to celebrate this big beautiful planet we all call home.

Speaker 4:
[06:07] Well, I actually call my home diaper house. Because it's made out of diapers.

Speaker 2:
[06:13] But Earth Day is also a day where we renew our commitment to take action to take care of it.

Speaker 1:
[06:20] Because when we take care of the Earth, the Earth takes care of us.

Speaker 2:
[06:26] And Earth could really use a little extra love and care right now. As you've all probably noticed, there have been some pretty bonker balls weather events lately. Wildfires, massive storms, hurricanes, droughts.

Speaker 1:
[06:41] And a lot of this is caused by something called climate change.

Speaker 4:
[06:45] Oh, I know her. She's a real pal.

Speaker 2:
[06:48] No, climate change is what happens when there's too much pollution and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. It causes the Earth's invisible blanket of heat trapping gases to become thicker.

Speaker 1:
[06:59] And when this happens, too much heat gets trapped and Earth gets hotter.

Speaker 3:
[07:12] So, a big old storm is just the earth throwing a hissy fit?

Speaker 2:
[07:16] Well, I guess that's one way to look at it.

Speaker 5:
[07:18] Oh, I get it. Earth Day is the day we go, Yay Earth! You're so big and beautiful! And if we promise to be good to you, will you promise to chill out and stop sneak attacking us with storms and fires?

Speaker 1:
[07:31] Sure, I suppose that kind of sums it up.

Speaker 2:
[07:34] So I was thinking before we let Earth's tornado out of the closet to blow out all 4.5 billion candles on its Earth Day cake, maybe we should do presents?

Speaker 4:
[07:45] Or take a whack at this big old beehive shaped piñata.

Speaker 1:
[07:50] Wait, Grandma G-Force, that piñata is a beehive. Mindy, why did you?

Speaker 4:
[07:57] Not now, there's only room for one queen bee at this party and that's out. Why are you stinging me, bee?

Speaker 2:
[08:09] Grandma G-Force, please step away from the beehive.

Speaker 4:
[08:13] Okay, fine.

Speaker 2:
[08:15] Thank you. Now, do you have your Earth Day present to give to Earth?

Speaker 4:
[08:19] Sure do. Ahem. Here, Bessie, Bessie, Bessie. Come on, girl.

Speaker 1:
[08:31] A cow? Hi, cow.

Speaker 2:
[08:34] Grandma G-Force, why would you bring a cow to an Earth Day party?

Speaker 4:
[08:39] Because you told me to bring a present for Earth.

Speaker 3:
[08:43] Now, what's the Earth gonna do with a cow? No offense, cow.

Speaker 4:
[08:48] Well, Earth loves cows. Just ask all of Earth's plants that grew out of this cow's poop.

Speaker 1:
[08:56] Manure the cow's manure.

Speaker 2:
[08:59] Well, I guess cow pooper, manure, is a natural fertilizer for the Earth.

Speaker 1:
[09:05] But I will say that the methane gas that's produced by cows is adding quite a bit of greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere and causing our Earth to get even hotter.

Speaker 5:
[09:17] What is he talking about?

Speaker 3:
[09:18] I believe he's talking about cow farts.

Speaker 2:
[09:20] Well, not just farts, but cow burps as well.

Speaker 3:
[09:24] Oh, nice one, Bessie.

Speaker 2:
[09:25] See, as cows digest their food, they produce a lot of farts and burps, and those burps alone release a lot of greenhouse gas into the atmosphere.

Speaker 3:
[09:37] Oh, come on, that don't seem like so much gas to me.

Speaker 2:
[09:41] Well, maybe not from one cow, but there are over 1.5 billion cows on Earth. And with those kinds of numbers, cows are now a significant contributor to global warming or those rising temperatures of the Earth.

Speaker 4:
[09:55] Well, first of all, I already know that. And second of all, that's why this cow present for all Earth is coming with a gas mask and a fart filter. Here, cow, put this on. Stay still, stop wiggling.

Speaker 3:
[10:15] I'll be a burp-blocking gas mask for a cow. What will they think of next?

Speaker 4:
[10:22] Now turn around, cow. Let me fix this to your backside. Here we go.

Speaker 5:
[10:28] Ooh, two trapping undies. We should put a pair on Tommy.

Speaker 3:
[10:31] No way, dude.

Speaker 4:
[10:33] Now stay put, cow. Gotta get this fart filter fixed to your rump.

Speaker 1:
[10:39] This is ridiculous.

Speaker 2:
[10:41] Yeah, but you know, Guy Raz, researchers have actually been exploring and even testing the concept of wearable devices for cows that capture the methane they produce before it's released into the atmosphere.

Speaker 4:
[10:54] And my farmer friend, Old MacDonald installed some cow fart filters in his barn.

Speaker 1:
[11:01] What?

Speaker 2:
[11:02] Oh yeah, I've heard of these. These systems use big fans and giant air filters to trap the methane gases that cows burp and fart out. And then that gas can be converted into useful energy like biogas to power the farm.

Speaker 1:
[11:18] And you know, and now that you mention it, I recently read that researchers at the University of California, Davis, found that adding seaweed to a cow's diet helps to reduce the amount of methane emissions by almost 40 percent.

Speaker 4:
[11:33] Wow! So, there you go, Earth. Enjoy your farting cow.

Speaker 1:
[11:40] Okay.

Speaker 2:
[11:41] Who's up next? Thomas Fingerling, did you bring an Earth Day present for Earth?

Speaker 3:
[11:45] Why, yes, Mandy, I did. Behold, a smog sucker.

Speaker 5:
[11:55] Tommy, that's just an old vacuum cleaner that you've turned upside down.

Speaker 3:
[11:59] Yeah, what's your point? Now, behold, as the smog sucker sucks up all the cow farts in this room.

Speaker 1:
[12:15] Okay, I think that's enough.

Speaker 3:
[12:18] What? You say something, Mr. Ozzy.

Speaker 1:
[12:21] I said, I think that's enough.

Speaker 5:
[12:24] You can turn off the vacuum cleaner now.

Speaker 3:
[12:35] What the? Deep forest, did you unplug the power cable?

Speaker 4:
[12:39] No, I cut it with my teeth.

Speaker 2:
[12:42] Wait a minute. A vacuum cleaner that sucks up all the pollution in the air? This is actually a great new idea.

Speaker 3:
[12:52] Oh, I thank you, Mandy. I thought of it all by myself.

Speaker 1:
[12:57] Actually, while this is not a super well-known idea, it's hardly a new one.

Speaker 3:
[13:02] It's not?

Speaker 1:
[13:04] Well, a vacuum for air pollution is a technology that's been around for over 20 years, but it's taking a while to really take off.

Speaker 3:
[13:13] Somebody's already invented the smog sucker?

Speaker 1:
[13:16] Well, yeah, kind of. It's something known as direct air capture.

Speaker 3:
[13:21] Oh, well, I think smog sucker sounds better.

Speaker 1:
[13:23] Yeah!

Speaker 2:
[13:24] And Guy Raz, is direct air capture an upside down vacuum that sucks up air pollution?

Speaker 1:
[13:30] Well, yeah, sort of. Direct air capture is kind of like a giant vacuum cleaner for the sky. It uses special machines to suck up carbon dioxide, trap it, and then it either stores it safely underground or it turns it into something useful like fuel for airplanes.

Speaker 4:
[13:51] Oh, I want to fly an airplane powered by recycled air pollution.

Speaker 2:
[13:57] Me too!

Speaker 3:
[13:58] Well, then we better fix the smog sucker and make some airplane fuel.

Speaker 4:
[14:03] Bessie, not now, cow.

Speaker 2:
[14:06] Okay, who's next? Dennis, did you bring an Earth Day present for Earth? Dennis? Where'd Dennis go?

Speaker 1:
[14:15] He was just here. Dennis, where are you? You're up.

Speaker 5:
[14:19] I'm coming. Huh? Everyone look out. These are fragile and heavy.

Speaker 7:
[14:28] What in the?

Speaker 1:
[14:30] Why is he covered in mirrors?

Speaker 2:
[14:35] Dennis, stop! You're reflecting the light from the sun directly into our eyes.

Speaker 3:
[14:41] I'm melting.

Speaker 1:
[14:42] Dennis, what are you doing?

Speaker 2:
[14:44] Why are you covered in mirrors?

Speaker 5:
[14:46] I'm not, Dennis. I'm Super Space Mirror Man, and I'm the greatest gift to Earth.

Speaker 4:
[14:53] What?

Speaker 3:
[14:54] I don't get it.

Speaker 5:
[14:54] With the power of my Super Sun repelling mirror suit, I can reflect the sun's powerful rays away from the Earth and make the world cooler.

Speaker 6:
[15:04] Hi-yah!

Speaker 4:
[15:07] Wiggling boy, I'm trying to apply my lipstick and you keep moving.

Speaker 5:
[15:12] Oh, sorry.

Speaker 2:
[15:12] You know, Super Space Mirror Man is kind of on to something.

Speaker 5:
[15:17] I am?

Speaker 2:
[15:18] He is. What he's modeling with this suit of mirrors is something called solar radiation management.

Speaker 3:
[15:27] You don't say?

Speaker 2:
[15:28] Scientists have been exploring the idea of placing giant mirrors or reflective surfaces in space to reflect sunlight away from Earth, with the idea that this could help cool our warming planet.

Speaker 1:
[15:41] Ah, so it's kind of like giving the Earth a little sun shade to keep it from overheating?

Speaker 2:
[15:47] Well, yeah, sort of. And scientists have been coming up with all sorts of ideas to reflect some of the sun's heat back into space.

Speaker 1:
[15:55] Like what?

Speaker 2:
[15:56] Well, like spraying teeny tiny shiny particles into the sky to reflect the sun away from the Earth. Or by spraying saltwater particles into clouds to make them brighter and more reflective.

Speaker 5:
[16:08] Or we can all dress in super sun-repelling mirror suits like me, Super Space Mirror Man.

Speaker 2:
[16:13] Well, like Dennis' mirror suit, these ideas are all far from perfect and some of them could actually cause other problems. But they're a start and innovation requires lots of ideas, both good and bad, before we can get to the really wow ones.

Speaker 5:
[16:30] Well, I'm still giving myself to the Earth. Here, Earth.

Speaker 7:
[16:34] Okay.

Speaker 2:
[16:36] And what about you, Guy Raz? Do you have an Earth Day present for Earth?

Speaker 1:
[16:40] Well, I do, but it's actually next door in my driveway.

Speaker 2:
[16:43] You bought the Earth a car?

Speaker 3:
[16:55] Yeah, we want cars.

Speaker 1:
[16:57] No, no, no, I did not buy the earth a car.

Speaker 3:
[17:01] Oh.

Speaker 1:
[17:01] I built the earth a solar-powered driveway. But why? Because by using solar power to power my electric car, I don't need to use other forms of electricity that come from burning coal or oil or natural gas. And by using the free, clean power directly from the sun, my car isn't putting any harmful pollution into the atmosphere.

Speaker 2:
[17:27] And this reminds me, Guy Raz, places like China and Sweden and even the US have all been experimenting with not just solar-powered driveways, but solar-powered roads.

Speaker 7:
[17:40] Belly? It's true.

Speaker 2:
[17:42] Roads that use solar energy from the sun to power electric vehicles while they're driving.

Speaker 4:
[17:48] Get outta here.

Speaker 2:
[17:49] And here in the US, scientists have been testing solar road panels with built-in heaters to melt snow and ice caused by winter storms.

Speaker 3:
[17:59] Whoa, can your driveway do that, Mr. Ozzie?

Speaker 1:
[18:01] Well, not yet, but I certainly am inspired by this innovation.

Speaker 5:
[18:06] And now what about you, Mindy?

Speaker 2:
[18:07] Well, what about me?

Speaker 5:
[18:08] Did you bring a present for Planet Earth?

Speaker 2:
[18:10] Oh, yeah. Well, I've been working on a few handmade gifts, inventions, if you will, but they're all going to need a little work.

Speaker 1:
[18:20] What do you mean?

Speaker 2:
[18:21] Well, let's see here. First, I tried building this giant hand fan that brushes all the litter and pollution and sends it off into space, but... But I forgot to account for gravity and it all came raining back down. And then I came up with this can of instant glacier spray, you know, spray on glacier to rebuild all of the melting icebergs.

Speaker 4:
[18:50] Yes?

Speaker 2:
[18:51] But I'm going to need a lot more cans. Turns out icebergs are pretty huge. And finally, I invented these giant planet-sized sunglasses. But when I went to put them on Earth, I remembered that Earth has no ears or nose to hold them up and they just kept slipping off.

Speaker 1:
[19:20] Well, you know what they say, Mindy, it's the thought that counts. And looking around at this party and the way you welcomed Earth inside your home.

Speaker 3:
[19:29] Literally.

Speaker 1:
[19:30] I'd say you give a lot of love and thought to this planet.

Speaker 4:
[19:33] Yeah, and I just got back from the toilet and there's a giant volcano in there.

Speaker 2:
[19:40] Wait, I didn't put a volcano in the toilet.

Speaker 4:
[19:43] I did.

Speaker 1:
[19:44] Well, I think we better wrap up this party and get the Earth back to where it belongs before that volcano erupts.

Speaker 2:
[19:53] Good idea, but before we do, we've got to help the Earth blow out all 4.5 billion candles on its Earth Day cake. Reggie, bring out the Earth Day cake. Okay, now everyone sing with me.
